Tankmates: Only with small, calm fish that will not outcompete them at feeding (e.g. small rasboras). Will eat shrimplets; adult cherry shrimp usually survive larger Badis only with cover, Dario mainly take baby shrimp.
Feeding: Most refuse dry food; plan on live and frozen foods. Some Badis eventually accept small granules, but Dario rarely do. Size food to the fish (Dario need very small items).

Badis are tiny, slow-moving fish from South Asia, in a small family of their own (Badidae). They are sometimes called chameleon fish because their colours shift with mood. The best known in the hobby is the scarlet badis (Dario dario), a jewel-like nano fish only about 2 cm long, with bright red bars on the male.
They suit hobbyists with a planted nano tank who enjoy watching small, deliberate fish rather than fast schools. FishyHub lists badis from Malaysian aquarium shops and specialist sellers, with prices in RM.
The most popular. Males are bright red and blue; females are plain grey-silver. Keep one male with several females, or one male per tank, as males fight.
A larger badis, reaching around 5–6 cm, with blue, grey and dark patterning that changes quickly. Calm, but territorial with its own kind.
Species such as Badis ruber or Dario hysginon appear now and then. Names in the trade can be loose, so ask for clear photos.
| Care point | Badis and Dario |
|---|---|
| Temperature | About 22–27°C. This is at the cool end of Malaysian room temperature, so keep the tank in a shaded, cooler spot. |
| Minimum tank | 1 kaki (30 cm, 12–15 L) for scarlet badis; 2 kaki (60 cm, 55–65 L) for blue badis. |
| Temperament | Peaceful with other species; males are territorial. |
| Diet | Micro-predator: live or frozen foods such as artemia, daphnia, grindal worm and small bloodworm. |
| Beginner-friendly? | Not ideal. Hardy, but most refuse dry food. |
Most badis will not take pellets or flakes. Plan a steady supply of live or frozen food: baby artemia, daphnia, cacing grindal (grindal worm) or chopped cacing darah (bloodworm). Some individuals learn to take frozen foods; very few accept dry food. Because they feed slowly, keep them away from fast, greedy tankmates that clear food first.
A densely planted tank with moss, small caves, leaf litter and dim lighting helps them feel secure and brings out colour. Gentle flow from a sponge filter is ideal. Good tankmates are small, peaceful fish such as Boraras rasboras or small, calm tetras; adult shrimp are usually fine, although shrimplets may be eaten.
Check the species, sex ratio and whether the photo shows the actual fish. Ask the seller what the fish are currently eating. Check the seller's location, delivery or self-collect options and live-arrival policy. Prices in RM depend on species and whether you buy single males, pairs or trios.
Adult cherry shrimp are usually safe, but baby shrimp may be eaten. A heavily planted tank lets some survive.
Males have red bars and blue-edged fins. Females are smaller, plainer and grey-silver.
Browse scarlet badis and other badis from Malaysian sellers, compare prices in RM, and stock up on live or frozen food. They pair nicely with nano rasboras and aquascape plants in a small planted tank.
