Betta simorum is a fairly large, slender wild betta from the peat swamps of Sumatra and Borneo. Males are dark brown to bronze with rows of shiny blue-green scales, and long, slightly pointed fins edged in turquoise. It is a bubble nester and one of the bigger species kept in wild betta tanks.

Simorum lives in slow, tea-coloured water among roots and leaf litter, where the water is very soft and acidic. Peat swamp habitats across the region are shrinking, so choose captive-bred fish. It is calmer than a domestic fighting fish and can often be kept in a pair or small group in a large, well-planted tank.

Our soft tap water is a helpful base for blackwater tanks, but it must be treated with anti klorin first. Add daun ketapang, other leaf litter and Malaysian driftwood to soften and stain the water, and test pH occasionally to keep it stable. A sponge filter gives clean water without strong current.
