Kenapa Ikan Laga Duduk Diam? Lethargic Betta Causes & Checklist
Kenapa ikan laga duduk diam? Sometimes it's nothing: bettas are naturally lazy fish that rest on leaves, near the surface or on the bottom, especially long-finned types. But a betta that suddenly stops moving, clamps its fins, loses colour or ignores food is telling you something is wrong. The most common causes in Malaysian homes are temperature swings (often from aircond), poor water quality, overfeeding, illness and old age. This guide helps you tell normal resting from a real problem, with a checklist you can run through in five minutes.
Normal Resting vs a Sick Betta
| Normal | Worry |
|---|---|
| Rests on a leaf or decor, then swims to the front when you come near | Doesn't react to you or to food |
| Fins open and relaxed | Fins clamped tight against the body |
| Good colour | Pale, dull or patchy colour; dark horizontal stress stripes |
| Eats eagerly | Spits food out or ignores it for days |
| Rests more at night, with lights off | Lies on the bottom all day, or hangs at the surface gasping |
| Long-finned betta resting after swimming | Struggles to stay level, floats or sinks |
Halfmoon, double-tail and other heavy-finned bettas tire faster and rest more than plakat types. Older bettas also slow down.
Kenapa Ikan Laga Duduk Diam: Common Causes
1. Temperature drops from aircond
Bettas are tropical fish. At normal Malaysian room temperature of about 26–31°C, they're comfortable. Problems start when a small tank sits in a bedroom with the aircond running all night. The water can cool by several degrees, then warm up again in the day. Cool water slows a betta's metabolism, so it sits still and eats less, and repeated swings stress the immune system.
Check: put a thermometer in the tank and read it in the morning and evening. If the water drops into the low 20s overnight, move the tank away from the aircond vent, use a larger tank (bigger volume changes temperature more slowly), or add a small adjustable heater.
2. Overheating
The opposite also happens: a small betta tank near a window or in a hot room can climb past 32°C in a heatwave. Warm water holds less oxygen, and the fish may hang at the surface. Keep tanks out of direct sunlight. Our aquarium cooling guide covers fans and other options.
3. Poor water quality
Ammonia and nitrite build up fast in small, unfiltered containers, especially in warm water. A betta sitting at the bottom with clamped fins in a jar that hasn't been changed for a while is a classic sign. Test the water, then do a water change with anti klorin. For a small betta tank, 20–30% weekly is a good routine, more often if unfiltered.
4. Overfeeding and constipation
A betta that gorges on pellets or bloodworms may bloat and become sluggish. If the belly is swollen but the scales lie flat, fast for 1–2 days, then feed smaller portions. If it floats or tilts, it may be a swim bladder problem.
5. Illness
Check closely with a torch:
- Gold dust: velvet. See penyakit velvet ikan laga.
- White dots: white spot.
- Ragged, shrinking fins with dark edges: fin rot.
- Raised scales, swollen body: dropsy.
Our betta disease guide covers the main illnesses in one place.
6. Stress and new surroundings
A betta that's just been bought, delivered or moved often hides and sits still for a day or two. Bettas that can see another betta, or a mirror-like reflection, may flare until exhausted, then rest. Bright, constant light or strong filter current also tire them out.
7. Old age
Bettas usually live about 2–4 years, sometimes more with good care. Many are already several months old when sold. An older betta naturally rests more, eats less, and its colour fades. Make life easy: lower water level, gentle flow, resting spots near the surface.
5-Minute Checklist
- Temperature: what does the thermometer read? Stable through the day?
- Water: when was the last water change? Any smell or cloudiness? Test ammonia and nitrite if you can.
- Fins: open or clamped?
- Body: any dust, spots, swelling, raised scales, torn fins?
- Appetite: does it eat when offered a small amount?
- Breathing: normal, or fast with gills working hard?
- Recent changes: new tank, new fish, new decor, move, aircond, medicine?
If temperature and water are fine and the betta still eats, it's probably just resting. If several boxes are ticked, act on the water and temperature first, then treat any disease you identify.
Make the Tank Betta-Friendly
- At least 5 litres for one betta; larger is more stable. Our betta care guide explains setup.
- Gentle filter or a sponge filter.
- Resting spots: broad-leaf plants, a betta leaf hammock or floating plants.
- Daun ketapang: many Malaysian keepers add catappa leaves for mild tannins and a calmer environment.
- Lid: bettas jump, and a lid also keeps the air above the water warm.
- Regular routine: lights on and off at similar times each day.
FAQ
Ikan laga duduk diam tapi masih makan, normal tak?
Biasanya normal. Ikan laga memang suka berehat, terutamanya jenis bersirip panjang seperti halfmoon. Kalau warna masih cantik, sirip terbuka dan ikan masih berselera, ia mungkin cuma berehat.
Do bettas sleep?
Yes. Bettas rest at night and often lie on leaves, decor or the bottom with the lights off. Their colour may look slightly paler while resting.
Should I add a heater for my betta in Malaysia?
Usually not. Malaysian room temperature suits bettas. A heater helps only if the tank is in a room with aircond running for long hours and the water drops noticeably.
Why is my new betta not moving?
New bettas often sit still for a day or two after transport. Keep the lights dim, don't feed much at first, and check water temperature. If it still refuses food after a few days, look for signs of illness.
