The honest answer first: there is no ikan hiasan tanpa oksigen. Every fish needs oxygen. What people really mean is fish that can live without an air pump (pam udara). The best candidates are labyrinth fish such as the ikan laga (betta), gouramis and paradise fish, which can gulp air from the surface. Some other hardy fish, like guppies, can also manage without an air pump if the tank is lightly stocked, has a wide water surface, live plants and a filter that ripples the surface. Why "Ikan Hiasan Tanpa Oksigen" Is a Myth
Oxygen enters aquarium water mainly at the surface, where water meets air. An air pump doesn't push much oxygen in directly through its bubbles; its main job is to move the water so oxygen-poor water from below keeps coming up to the surface to exchange gas.
So a tank can be well oxygenated without an air pump if:
- The surface area is large compared to the depth
- A filter outflow ripples the surface
- Live plants add oxygen in the daytime
- The tank is lightly stocked and not overfed
- The water is not too hot
Malaysian heat makes it harder
Warm water simply holds less dissolved oxygen. At around 30°C, fully saturated fresh water holds roughly 7.5 mg/L of oxygen, compared with about 9 mg/L at 20°C. Malaysian tanks often sit at 28–31°C and can go higher in heatwaves. At the same time, fish breathe faster in warm water, and decomposing food uses up oxygen. Important: labyrinth fish can drown if they can't reach the surface. Never fill a betta tank to the very top with a tight lid and no air gap, and never keep them in sealed containers.

Yes, in the right setup:

No, if: they're in a tiny bowl, the tank is crowded, overfed, or sitting in a hot spot. Guppies gasping at the surface in the afternoon is a clear sign to add aeration.
