Akuarium Elektrik Terputus: Keeping Fish Alive During a Power Cut in Malaysia
When the akuarium elektrik terputus (aquarium power goes off), oxygen is your first problem, not food or temperature. Switch on a battery or rechargeable air pump straight away, or stir the surface by scooping and pouring water every 15–30 minutes. Don't feed the fish. Keep the lid open for gas exchange, the lights off, and the room as cool as you can. Most healthy, lightly stocked tanks get through a few hours without trouble. For longer cuts, protect the filter bacteria and restart the filter carefully, because stagnant water in a closed canister can turn toxic.
Power interruptions happen in Malaysia because of storms, scheduled maintenance, floods and occasional wider grid incidents. Here's how to prepare and what to do.
Akuarium Elektrik Terputus: First 15 Minutes Checklist
- Check if it's just your home. Look at the DB box (circuit breaker) first: a tripped breaker is common during storms. In Peninsular Malaysia, report outages to TNB on its 24-hour line, 15454. In Sabah and Sarawak, contact your local utility.
- Start emergency aeration. Battery air pump, USB air pump on a power bank, or manual stirring.
- Stop feeding. Food uses oxygen as fish digest it and as leftovers rot.
- Open the lid slightly to let air exchange at the surface.
- Turn off lights at the switch so they don't all restart at once.
- Note the time so you know how long the filter has been off.
Why Oxygen Drops So Fast in Malaysia
Most oxygen enters through the water surface, and filters and air pumps keep water moving so that happens efficiently. When everything stops:
- Water goes still, and oxygen near the bottom gets used up.
- Warm water holds less oxygen to begin with. Malaysian tanks usually sit at 27–31°C, and a room without fans or aircond during an outage can get warmer.
- Fish, bacteria and plants (at night) all keep consuming oxygen.
Crowded tanks, goldfish, koi fish ponds and big fish like arowana are the most at risk. Labyrinth fish such as bettas and gouramis cope better because they can breathe air. Our guide to ikan hiasan tanpa oksigen explains why.
Emergency Aeration Options
| Option | How it works | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery air pump (AA/D cells) | Runs on batteries | Small and medium tanks | Keep spare batteries; test it every few months |
| Rechargeable / dual-mode air pump | Runs on mains, switches to built-in battery when power cuts | Any tank you can't watch | Automatic, ideal if you work long hours |
| USB air pump + power bank | Runs from a phone power bank | Nano tanks, bettas, shrimp | Check how long your power bank lasts |
| Manual stirring | Scoop a jug of water and pour from a height | Any tank, no equipment | Every 15–30 minutes; tiring but works |
| UPS (uninterruptible power supply) | Battery backup for small devices | Air pumps, small filters | Size for the wattage; a UPS for an air pump lasts far longer than for a filter |
| Generator | Fuel-powered | Ponds, big setups | Run outdoors only; exhaust fumes are dangerous |

How Long Can Fish Survive?
There's no fixed number. It depends on stocking, temperature, how much waste is in the tank and the species. As a rough guide:
| Situation | Risk level |
|---|---|
| Lightly stocked tank, labyrinth fish, cool room | Low for many hours |
| Normal community tank, 28–30°C | Watch closely after 2–4 hours; aerate |
| Crowded tank, goldfish, large fish | High; aerate immediately |
| Koi fish pond with heavy stocking | High, especially at night |
Signs of trouble: fish gasping at the surface, rapid gill movement, fish crowding near the top or where you stir. If you see that, aerate more and do a small partial water change with treated water if you have some ready.
Protecting Your Filter Bacteria
Beneficial bacteria in the filter need oxygen too. When a filter stops:
- Sponge, hang-on and top filters: media is mostly open to air or water near the surface, so bacteria usually survive a few hours.
- Canister (external) filters: sealed and full of still water, so oxygen inside runs out quickly. After a long outage, the water inside can become foul.
What to do during a long outage (several hours or more):
- Canister: consider opening it and moving the media into a bucket of tank water with an air pump or airstone running from battery.
- Sponge filter: if your air pump is battery-backed, the sponge filter keeps working. That's a big reason many Malaysian keepers run one as backup.
- Keep media wet in tank water. Never rinse it under tap water, because chlorine kills the bacteria.
Our pillar on kenapa ikan mati explains how filter crashes lead to ammonia spikes.
When the Power Comes Back: Restart Checks
- Canister filters off for more than a few hours: before restarting, open and rinse the media gently in tank water and dump the stagnant water inside, so you don't flush a slug of dirty water into the tank.
- Turn on the filter first, then the air pump, then lights later.
- Check every device is running: power surges can damage pumps, chillers and LED drivers.
- Watch the fish for an hour.
- Test ammonia and nitrite with water test kits the next day, and do a 20–30% tukar air with water treated with anti klorin if readings rise.
- Feed lightly for the next day or two.
Power surge protection
Storms and restoration can cause spikes. A surge-protected power strip helps protect pumps, chillers and lights. If your area floods, switch off and unplug equipment at the wall before water reaches sockets, and never touch wet electrical equipment. During the monsoon, see our musim tengkujuh guide.
Prepare Before the Next Outage
- Keep a battery or rechargeable air pump with airline and airstone ready for each tank.
- Keep spare batteries or a charged power bank.
- Run a sponge filter alongside a canister in important tanks.
- Store a bucket of treated water for emergencies.
- Don't overstock. Lightly stocked tanks survive outages far better.
- Label plugs so you can switch things on in order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I feed my fish during a power cut?
No. Feeding increases oxygen demand and waste. Healthy fish can easily go a day or two without food.
Can a UPS run my aquarium filter?
It can run small devices for a while, but filters and heaters drain a UPS quickly. Putting only an air pump on a UPS gives the longest backup time.
Will my filter bacteria die in a power cut?
Some may, especially in a sealed canister during a long outage. Sponge and hang-on filters usually recover better. Test water for a few days after the power returns.
