Musim Tengkujuh Kolam Ikan: Monsoon & Flood Prep for Ponds and Aquariums

Musim tengkujuh kolam ikan prep (getting your fish pond ready for the monsoon) comes down to four jobs: stop overflow with a proper overflow pipe and a net over the pond, protect water chemistry from heavy rain that can drop pH and temperature, make the electrics safe before water reaches them, and have a plan for floods so fish don't end up in the drain or river. Indoor aquariums mostly need surge protection, battery aeration and a plan to unplug if flooding threatens.

For the 2026/2027 season, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the Northeast Monsoon would run from late October 2026 to March 2027, with episodes of continuous heavy rain expected in states including Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak. Check MetMalaysia's official warnings for your area, as forecasts change.

Musim Tengkujuh Kolam Ikan: The Main Risks

Risk What happens Who's most affected
Pond overflow Fish wash out over the edge into drains Ground-level ponds, small patio ponds, tubs
Rain pH/KH drop Soft rainwater dilutes buffers; pH can swing Ponds with low KH, heavily stocked koi fish ponds
Sudden temperature drop Cold rain cools shallow ponds quickly Small, shallow ponds and tubs
Runoff Soil, fertiliser, roof debris and pesticides wash in Ponds below garden beds or roof drains
Power cuts and surges Pumps and filters stop; electronics damaged All outdoor and indoor setups
Flooding Pond and floor-level tanks submerged Low-lying homes, ground-floor terrace houses

Step 1: Stop Overflow (Pond Overflow Nets and Pipes)

Overflow pipe. The best fix is an overflow outlet set a few centimetres below the pond rim, leading to a drain. Cover the inlet with a mesh or strainer so fish and fry can't escape through it.

Net over the pond. A fine net stretched across the pond, secured at the edges, stops koi fish and goldfish from being washed or jumping out when the water rises close to the rim. It also keeps leaves and debris out.

Lower the water level a few centimetres before forecast heavy rain to give yourself a buffer.

Divert roof water. Make sure gutters and downpipes don't empty into or towards the pond.

Nets, strainers and pond accessories are listed under FishyHub's pond equipment and accessories. If you're building or replacing a pond, raised artificial ponds such as fibreglass and canvas types sit above ground and are less exposed to surface flooding.

Step 2: Protect Water Chemistry

Rain is naturally soft with very little buffering capacity. A lot of rain in a short time dilutes a pond's KH, and pH can then fall or swing. In much of Malaysia tap water is already soft with low KH, so many ponds start with little buffer.

What to do:

  • Test pH and KH weekly during the monsoon, and after each big storm. Use water test kits.
  • Keep KH up if it's low, using a buffer suitable for ponds, following the product directions.
  • Don't panic-dose. Change pH slowly.
  • Feed less on cold, rainy days. Fish digest more slowly when water cools.

Our guide to using rainwater for fish goes into rain chemistry in more detail.

Step 3: Electrical Safety First

Water and electricity are the real danger in a flood.

  • Use outdoor-rated, covered sockets for pond pumps, and make sure your home's circuit has a working residual current device (the "trip" switch). Test it using its test button.
  • Raise plugs and extension boards off the floor.
  • If floodwater is rising, switch off at the DB box and unplug pumps, chillers and heaters before water reaches them.
  • Never wade into water near live electrical equipment.
  • After a flood, have a qualified electrician check wiring before switching back on.

Step 4: Keep Fish Breathing When Power Fails

Storms often cause power cuts. Keep a battery or rechargeable air pump for each pond and important tank, plus spare batteries. Stop feeding during outages. Our guide to akuarium elektrik terputus has the full checklist, and battery pumps are on the air pumps page.

Step 5: Have a Flood Plan

If you live in a flood-prone area:

  1. Watch official sources. MetMalaysia issues weather warnings, and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) publishes river levels on its Public InfoBanjir portal.
  2. Prepare containers. Lidded buckets, styrofoam boxes or large plastic bags and an air pump can hold fish temporarily.
  3. Move small tanks off the floor to a higher level or upstairs. Large tanks can't be moved full, so prioritise unplugging and safety.
  4. Prioritise people. Follow evacuation instructions. Fish are replaceable; you are not.

Jangan lepaskan ikan ke sungai

If a pond floods or you can't keep fish after a flood, do not release them into rivers, drains or lakes. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia reports that around 80 alien species are established in Malaysian waters, and release rules are set by each state: Perlis, for example, now fines people up to RM20,000 for releasing foreign fish into rivers without written permission. Rehome fish through hobby groups or sellers instead, and check with DOF if unsure.

Indoor Aquariums During the Monsoon

  • Surge protection for filters, chillers and lights.
  • Battery air pump ready.
  • Humidity rises during long rainy spells; keep lids on and check for condensation dripping onto sockets.
  • Rain-cooled rooms: tanks may cool a little but usually stay well within tropical range. Only discus and other warm-preferring fish in air-conditioned rooms usually need a heater.
  • Balcony tanks and tubs need covers to stop rain overflow.

Our pillar on Malaysian tap water covers treating water for top-ups and changes.

After the Storm: Recovery Checklist

  • Remove debris and skim the surface.
  • Test pH, KH, ammonia and nitrite.
  • Do a partial water change with tap water treated with anti klorin if runoff got in.
  • Rinse filter media in pond water, not tap water.
  • Check all fish for injuries and signs of stress.
  • Check pumps and cables for damage before switching on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bagaimana nak elak kolam ikan melimpah masa hujan lebat?

Does rain lower pond pH?

It can. Heavy rain dilutes the pond's buffering (KH), which can lead to pH drops or swings. Test regularly during the monsoon.

Should I feed my koi fish less during the monsoon?

Yes, on cold, rainy days. Lower water temperature slows digestion, and less food means less waste.

Do I need to net my pond during monsoon season?

It's strongly recommended. A net prevents fish washing or jumping out when water rises, and keeps debris out.
