Air Hujan untuk Kolam Ikan & Akuarium: Is Rainwater Safe for Fish?

Rain falling straight onto an outdoor pond is natural and usually fine in small amounts. The trouble with air hujan untuk kolam ikan comes in Malaysia's heavy downpours and monsoon season: lots of soft, slightly acidic rain can drop pH and KH quickly, cool the water suddenly, wash in dirty runoff from roofs and gardens, and make the pond overflow, carrying fish out with it. For indoor aquariums, collected rainwater is generally not a safe replacement for treated tap water, except in careful, specialist setups. Here's what happens to your pond after rain, and how to protect your fish.

What's Actually in Rainwater?

Rainwater is very soft, almost free of minerals. Clean rain is naturally slightly acidic, because it absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, and rain in built-up or industrial areas can be more acidic. By the time it reaches your pond, it may also carry:

  • Dust, soot and ash, especially after haze (jerebu) periods
  • Leaves, bird droppings and debris from roofs and gutters
  • Metals from roofing, gutters and pipes
  • Soil, fertiliser and garden chemicals washed off the ground
  • Insecticide from mosquito fogging or garden spraying nearby

Because it has almost no KH (carbonate hardness), rain doesn't buffer pH. Add a lot of it to a pond, and the pond's own buffering gets diluted.

What Happens to a Pond After Heavy Rain

Effect Why Risk
pH drop Soft, slightly acidic water dilutes the pond's buffer Stress, gasping, fish sitting still; sudden crashes can kill
KH drop Rain has almost no carbonate hardness pH becomes unstable afterwards
Temperature drop Cool rain on warm pond water Stress; koi and goldfish may get sick days later
Runoff contamination Roofs, gutters, garden soil, chemicals Poisoning, cloudy water, algae
Overflow Pond fills past the edge Fish washed out; garden water flows in
Lower oxygen at night Cloudy days reduce photosynthesis; decaying debris uses oxygen Gasping at dawn

Malaysia's northeast monsoon, usually from around November to March, brings long rainy spells, especially to the east coast of the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak. Afternoon thunderstorms can hit almost anywhere year-round. Many pond keepers see problems a few days after a spell of heavy rain, not on the day itself.

Air Hujan untuk Kolam Ikan: Protecting Your Pond in the Rainy Season

1. Test pH and KH

Keep a water test kit for pH and KH. Test before and after heavy rain. If KH is low, pH can swing quickly, which matters more than the exact pH number.

2. Keep KH up

Many pond keepers add a KH buffer, crushed coral or oyster shell in a filter bag in the filter to keep carbonate hardness stable. Follow product doses and raise gradually. Malaysian tap water is often soft too, so ponds topped up from the tap can already start with low KH.

3. Build an overflow

A proper overflow pipe or outlet at the planned maximum water level lets excess water drain away instead of over the edge. Cover it with mesh so fish can't escape. This is the single most useful upgrade for a monsoon-season pond.

4. Stop runoff getting in

  • Raise the pond edge slightly above the surrounding ground, so garden water can't flow in.
  • Don't direct roof gutters into the pond.
  • Keep fertiliser and pesticide away from the pond edge.

5. Cover or shade the pond

A roof, awning or shade net reduces how much rain falls straight in, and keeps leaves and debris out. Netting also deters herons and other predators.

6. Keep the air pump running

Cloudy days and decaying leaves reduce oxygen. An air pump running all night helps fish through the rainy season, especially in well-stocked koi ponds.

7. Feed less during cool, wet spells

When the water cools, fish digest more slowly. Reduce feeding until the weather and water temperature are back to normal.

8. Do a partial water change after heavy contamination

If runoff got in or the water turned murky, do a partial water change with tap water treated with anti klorin. See our water change guide and tap water guide.

Signs of Trouble After Rain

  • Koi or goldfish gasping at the surface, especially at dawn
  • Fish sitting at the bottom, clamped fins, not eating
  • Fish flashing (rubbing) against walls
  • Sudden cloudiness or foam (see air akuarium berbuih)
  • Dead fish a few days after a storm

Test pH, KH and ammonia, add aeration, and do a partial water change if needed.

Can You Use Collected Rainwater in an Aquarium?

Some keepers use collected rainwater for soft-water fish such as wild bettas, some rasboras, discus or blackwater biotopes. It can work in careful hands, but there are real risks:

  • Roof and gutter contamination is hard to control in towns and cities.
  • Rain after haze or near industry may carry pollutants.
  • No minerals or KH means unstable pH. Most fish, and especially livebearers (guppy, molly, platy), shrimp and snails, do badly in it.
  • Storage containers can grow bacteria and mosquito larvae. Aedes control is a real concern in Malaysia, so stored water must be covered.

For most hobbyists, treated tap water is safer and more consistent. If you want soft water for specialist fish, RO water mixed with remineraliser gives predictable results. If you do experiment with rainwater, collect it directly (not from roofs) after the first rain has washed the air, test it before use, and mix it with treated tap water rather than using it alone.

FAQ

Kenapa ikan koi mati selepas hujan?

Is rainwater better than tap water for aquariums?

Not for most fish. Rainwater lacks minerals, can be contaminated, and is unpredictable. Treated tap water is more consistent.

How do I stop my pond overflowing in the rain?

Install an overflow pipe at the maximum level, covered with mesh so fish can't escape. Keep the pond edge higher than the surrounding ground.

Should I add salt to my pond after rain?

Rain dilutes any salt already in the pond. Salt doesn't fix pH or KH problems, so test those first. Read garam ikan untuk apa for when salt does help.
