Kenapa Air Akuarium Berbuih? Foam & Bubbles in Tanks and Koi Ponds
Air akuarium berbuih (foamy aquarium water) isn't always a problem. A betta's bubble nest, small bubbles after a water change, and bubbles from an air stone are all normal. Foam becomes a warning sign when it's thick, sticky, lasts for hours, smells, or comes with cloudy water. That usually means too much dissolved protein and organic waste, from overfeeding, decaying matter, a dirty filter or medicine. The fix is mostly simple: feed less, clean and change water, and improve surface movement. Here's how to tell which kind you have.
Normal Bubbles vs Problem Foam
| Type | What it looks like | Normal? |
|---|---|---|
| Bubble nest | A cluster of small bubbles at the surface, often under a leaf, made by a male betta or gourami | Yes, a sign of a healthy, comfortable fish |
| After a water change | Small bubbles on glass, plants and surface that clear in a few hours | Yes, dissolved gas coming out of fresh tap water |
| Air stone / filter outlet | Bubbles that pop quickly | Yes |
| Plants "pearling" | Tiny bubbles on leaves in bright light | Yes, oxygen from photosynthesis |
| Thick, lasting foam | Foam that builds up and doesn't pop, often in corners | No, too much organic waste |
| Sticky, brownish or smelly foam | Foam that leaves a film, smells bad | No, decay or poor water |
| Rainbow film plus foam | Oily surface film | No, see surface film section below |
Bubble nests
Male ikan laga build bubble nests when they feel safe, even without a female. It's a good sign. Read more in our guide on why bettas build bubble nests.
Kenapa Air Akuarium Berbuih: The Problem Causes
1. Protein and organic waste
Uneaten food, fish waste and decaying plants release proteins into the water. Proteins make water "foamy", the same way egg white whips into foam. Warm Malaysian water (27–31°C) speeds up decay, so food left for a few hours breaks down faster than in cooler climates.
2. Overfeeding
The most common cause. If food sinks and stays uneaten after a few minutes, you're feeding too much.
3. Dirty or undersized filter
Clogged sponges and overloaded filters let waste build up. See our air akuarium cepat kotor guide for sizing.
4. Medicine and additives
Some medicines, plant fertilisers and conditioners cause temporary foaming, especially with strong aeration. It should fade after the treatment.
5. Dead fish or snail
A hidden dead fish or snail rots quickly and causes foam, smell and cloudiness. Count your fish and check behind decor.
6. Contamination
Soap, hand cream, insect spray or cleaning products on your hands, a bucket or a sponge. Even a small amount causes foam and can be deadly. Use dedicated aquarium buckets and rinse hands with plain water before touching the tank.
7. New tank
Some new tanks foam briefly while bacteria populations settle. If ammonia and nitrite are high, treat it as a cycling issue.
Fixes for Aquariums
- Scoop or skim the foam off with a cup or paper towel laid flat on the surface.
- Do a 25–30% water change with anti klorin-treated water, and siphon the gravel. Our water change guide covers the steps.
- Feed less: only what's eaten in about 1–2 minutes.
- Clean the filter sponge in old tank water. Add activated carbon or a fine filter pad to polish the water. Find media in filter accessories.
- Improve surface movement: point the filter outlet at the surface, or add a surface skimmer that pulls the top layer into the filter.
- Test ammonia and nitrite. If they're high, keep doing water changes.
Oily film and foam
If the surface has a greasy, rainbow-coloured film as well as foam, it's usually a protein-fat film from food. A surface skimmer and better surface agitation clear it fast.
Kolam Koi Berbusa Kenapa?
Foam on koi ponds is common, especially after heavy feeding or in hot weather.
| Pond foam cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Overfeeding | Feed less; remove uneaten pellets |
| High organic load / dirty filter | Clean mechanical filter media; partial water change |
| Koi spawning | Breeding releases proteins; foam appears after spawning. Do a partial water change |
| Waterfall or strong splash | Mixes air into protein-rich water; reduce feeding and clean filter |
| Rain runoff | Leaves, soil, garden chemicals washed in. See air hujan untuk kolam ikan |
| Medicine | Usually temporary |
Many koi keepers notice foam right after their koi spawn, often early in the morning. That's normal, but it's a good time for a water change, since spawning stresses fish and dirties the water.
Prevention
- Feed small amounts, once or twice a day.
- Weekly water changes of 20–30%.
- Clean filter media regularly (in tank water).
- Don't overstock.
- Remove dead plants and fish quickly.
- Keep chemicals away from the tank and pond. Cover ponds if neighbours are spraying insecticide or during fogging.
FAQ
Is foam in a fish tank dangerous?
The foam itself isn't toxic, but it's a sign of too much waste. If you ignore it, ammonia and bacteria can build up and harm fish.
Why is there foam after adding medicine?
Some medicines contain ingredients that foam with aeration. It usually goes away when treatment ends and you do a water change.
Will a protein skimmer help a freshwater tank?
Protein skimmers are mainly for saltwater tanks and don't work well in freshwater. In freshwater, use a surface skimmer, carbon, water changes and less food.
