Air Akuarium Cepat Kotor? Why Tanks Get Dirty Fast & How to Fix It
If your air akuarium cepat kotor (tank gets dirty fast), with poop, food bits and debris floating around a few days after cleaning, the tank is producing more waste than the filter can catch. The usual reasons are too many or too-messy fish, overfeeding, a filter too small for the tank, and substrate that traps waste. The fix is rarely more cleaning: it's a correctly sized filter, less food and a sensible stocking level. Here's how to find which one applies to you, with a filter sizing table by tank size in kaki.
Dirty vs Cloudy: Know the Difference
- Dirty: visible particles, poop, food bits and plant debris floating or settling on the bottom. That's what this guide covers.
- Cloudy (keruh): water looks milky white, green or yellow, even without visible particles. That's usually bacteria bloom, algae or tannins. See our kenapa air akuarium keruh guide.
Many tanks have both problems at once, and the causes overlap.
Air Akuarium Cepat Kotor: The Main Causes
1. Overstocking
More fish means more waste. A 2 kaki tank (about 55 L of real water) can comfortably hold a school of small tetras or rasboras, but not ten goldfish. Our tank size guide gives stocking examples by size.
2. Messy fish
Some fish produce far more waste than their size suggests:
- Goldfish (ikan emas) and koi: constant eaters, constant poopers, and they dig in gravel
- Arowana, oscar and other large predators: big meals, big waste
- Plecos (ikan bandaraya): graze all day and leave long strings of waste
- Large cichlids: rearrange the substrate and stir up debris
These fish need a filter rated well above the tank size.
3. Overfeeding
Food that isn't eaten in a minute or two sinks, rots and clouds the water. In warm Malaysian water (27–31°C), fish digest faster and look hungry, so it's easy to give too much. Feed small portions once or twice a day.
4. Undersized or poorly placed filter
Many starter kits come with a small filter that only just copes with a lightly stocked tank. If debris drifts around and never reaches the intake, the flow is too weak or the intake is in the wrong place.
5. Clogged filter media
Once sponges are full, flow drops and the filter stops catching debris. Rinse sponges in old tank water every 2–4 weeks, or sooner if flow drops.
6. Substrate that traps waste
Very coarse gravel traps food and poop between stones. Deep gravel without siphoning becomes a waste store that releases debris whenever fish dig. Very fine sand shows every speck of poop on top.
Filter Sizing by Tank Kaki
A good rule is a filter flow of 4–6 times the tank volume per hour, and more for goldfish, arowana and other messy fish.
| Tank | Real water (approx.) | Flow for community fish | Flow for messy fish | Common filter types |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kaki | ~12 L | 100–200 L/h | 200–300 L/h | Sponge, small hang-on |
| 2 kaki | ~55 L | 250–400 L/h | 400–600 L/h | Hang-on, top filter, small canister |
| 3 kaki | ~155 L | 600–1,000 L/h | 1,000–1,500 L/h | Top filter, canister |
| 4 kaki | ~230 L | 1,000–1,500 L/h | 1,500–2,000+ L/h | Large canister, top filter, sump |
| 5–6 kaki | 350–550 L | 1,500–2,500 L/h | 2,500+ L/h | Sump, multiple canisters |
Manufacturer flow ratings are often measured with no media and no head height, so real flow is lower. When in doubt, go one size up.
Browse options in filters, including top filters (popular in Malaysia for goldfish and arowana tanks) and external canister filters.
Mechanical media makes the difference
Debris is caught by mechanical media: sponges, filter floss and fine pads. If water looks dirty but your filter is big, add a layer of fine filter wool after the coarse sponge, and replace the wool often. Find media in filter accessories.
Fixes: Step by Step
- Cut feeding in half for a week and see if it improves.
- Siphon the gravel thoroughly during water changes. See our cara tukar air akuarium guide.
- Rinse filter sponges in tank water. Never under the tap.
- Add fine filter wool to catch small particles.
- Check the flow: does debris reach the intake? Reposition the outlet so water circulates around the whole tank, with no dead corners.
- Upgrade the filter if it's below the table above, or add a second filter. A sponge filter run by an air pump is a cheap extra.
- Re-think stocking: rehome some fish, or upgrade the tank.
- Remove dead leaves, melting plants and leftover food daily.

Don't Over-Clean
It's tempting to strip the tank, scrub the gravel and wash the filter under the tap. That removes the good bacteria that keep ammonia down, and the tank may get cloudy and dirtier afterwards. Clean the filter and do big gravel cleans in different weeks, and always rinse media in old tank water.
Malaysian Tips
- Direct sunlight feeds algae that breaks off and drifts as green debris. Keep tanks away from windows.
- Power cuts stop filters; when power returns, a burst of dirty water may come out. Rinse the filter after a long outage.
- Hot weather speeds up decay, so stay on top of feeding and siphoning.
FAQ
Kenapa air akuarium cepat kotor walaupun baru cuci?
How often should I clean the filter?
Rinse sponges in tank water every 2–4 weeks, or whenever flow drops noticeably. Fine filter wool can be replaced weekly in messy tanks.
Will more water changes fix a dirty tank?
They help, but if the cause is overfeeding or a weak filter, the dirt comes back quickly. Fix the cause first.
Why is my goldfish tank always dirty?
Goldfish produce a lot of waste and dig through gravel. They need a strong filter, regular water changes and fewer fish per tank than tropical species.
