Garam Ikan untuk Apa? Aquarium Salt Uses, Doses & When Not to Use It
Garam ikan untuk apa? Aquarium salt (plain sodium chloride, no iodine) helps freshwater fish cope with stress, supports their slime coat, reduces the harm from nitrite, and helps treat some parasites such as white spot. It's not a cure-all, and it's not something every tank needs all the time. Used at the right dose for the right fish, it's one of the cheapest and most useful items in a Malaysian fishkeeper's cabinet. Used wrongly, it can stress or kill salt-sensitive fish, shrimp and plants.
Garam Ikan untuk Apa: What It Actually Does
Freshwater fish are saltier inside than the water around them, so water constantly seeps into their bodies and they spend energy pumping it out. Adding a little salt to the water reduces that difference, which means less work for a fish that's already stressed or injured.
| Use | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| After transport or new arrival | Lowers osmotic stress while the fish settles |
| Injuries and torn fins | Supports slime coat, discourages fungus |
| Nitrite poisoning | Chloride in salt reduces how much nitrite fish absorb through their gills |
| White spot and some parasites | At higher levels, makes life hard for some parasites |
| Koi and goldfish ponds | General tonic after handling, during stress, or with medicine as directed |
| Livebearers | Mollies in particular often do well with a little salt |
For white spot doses and the full treatment method, read our white spot treatment guide. This article covers everything else.
Safe Doses
These are general hobbyist guides for tolerant fish. Always start lower if unsure.
| Purpose | Typical dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General tonic / stress | about 1 g per litre | Short-term, e.g. 1–2 weeks after transport |
| Treatment for tolerant fish | about 2–3 g per litre | Raise over a day or two; not for sensitive fish |
| Koi / goldfish pond tonic | about 1 g per litre (0.1%) | Calculate pond volume first; dissolve and spread across the pond |
| Nitrite emergency | low dose, about 0.5–1 g per litre | Buys time while you fix the cause with water changes |
A level teaspoon of fine salt weighs very roughly 5–6 g, but grain size varies, so a small kitchen scale is more accurate.
How to add salt
- Calculate real water volume. For a pond: length × width × average depth in metres × 1,000 = litres. For aquariums: length × width × height in cm ÷ 1,000.
- Dissolve the salt in a bucket of tank water first.
- Add slowly, spread over several hours for larger doses.
- Keep track. Write down how much you added and when.
Salt doesn't evaporate
When water evaporates, salt stays behind. Top up evaporation with plain dechlorinated water only. When you do a water change, add salt only for the volume you replaced, if you're still treating. In hot Malaysian weather, evaporation is fast, so this matters. See our air akuarium berkurang guide.
Who Tolerates Salt, and Who Doesn't
| Usually tolerate low salt | Sensitive: avoid or use very low |
|---|---|
| Goldfish (ikan emas) | Corydoras |
| Ikan koi | Plecos (ikan bandaraya) and many catfish |
| Mollies, guppies, platies, swordtails | Loaches (kuhli, botia) |
| Bettas (lower levels) | Many tetras and rasboras |
| Most gouramis (lower levels) | Shrimp (udang hiasan) and snails |
| Most live plants |
Scaleless and small-scaled fish are the main group to be careful with. Many medicine labels also recommend half doses for them.
Plants and ponds
Most aquarium plants dislike salt, and many pond plants do too. If your koi pond has water lilies, lotus or other plants, treat sick fish in a separate tub instead.
Garam Ikan Koi: Pond Tips
- Koi handle salt well, which is why "garam ikan koi" is so common in Malaysian shops.
- Don't keep ponds salted permanently. Constant salt can make parasites resistant and stresses plants.
- After heavy rain, dilution lowers salt levels, and pond chemistry can change. See our air hujan untuk kolam ikan guide.
- Check other treatments first. Some pond medicines should not be mixed with salt.

What Kind of Salt?
- Use: plain aquarium salt or pure, non-iodised salt without anti-caking agents.
- Avoid: iodised table salt, salt with anti-caking agents, flavoured or rock salts of unknown origin.
- Not the same: Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is used for swelling and constipation, not as a tonic. Marine salt is for saltwater tanks and contains many minerals; it's not a substitute.
Find aquarium salt and conditioners in water conditioners and additives.
Garam Ikan Terlalu Banyak: Signs of Too Much Salt
- Fish gasping, darting or lying on their side
- Clamped fins, loss of balance
- Shrimp and snails dying first
- Plants melting or yellowing
What to do: do a 25–50% water change with dechlorinated water at the same temperature, then another the next day. Change gradually rather than all at once, so the fish don't face a sudden swing back.
When NOT to Use Salt
- In a planted or shrimp tank
- With sensitive fish (see table)
- As a substitute for clean water. If fish are stressed because of ammonia, fix the water first.
- Permanently in a normal community tank. Healthy freshwater tanks don't need it.
- Mixed with a medicine whose label says not to.
FAQ
Can I use table salt for fish?
Avoid iodised table salt and salt with anti-caking agents. Plain non-iodised salt can work, but aquarium salt is the safest choice.
Do I add salt after every water change?
Only if you're still treating, and only for the volume you replaced. Don't add salt when topping up evaporation.
Is aquarium salt safe for bettas?
At low levels, usually yes. Many betta keepers use a small amount after fin damage. Bettas tolerate less than goldfish or mollies, so stay at the low end.
