Air Akuarium Berkurang: Evaporation in Hot Malaysian Weather
If your air akuarium berkurang (water level drops) a little every few days, it's almost always evaporation, not a leak. Malaysian tanks run warm all year, and fans and open tops speed it up a lot. Evaporation is normal and easy to manage: top up with dechlorinated water (or RO water for marine tanks), keep a lid on where possible, and remember that topping up is not the same as a water change. If the level drops fast, you see damp spots, or water drops even with a lid, check for a leak.
Why Air Akuarium Berkurang
Water evaporates from the surface all the time. How fast depends on:
| Factor | Effect on evaporation |
|---|---|
| Water temperature | Warmer water evaporates faster. Malaysian tanks often sit at 27–31°C |
| Open top / no lid | Much faster than a covered tank |
| Cooling fan (kipas akuarium) | Speeds up evaporation a lot; that's how fans cool the water |
| Air movement in the room | Ceiling fans and windows increase it |
| Aircond rooms | Aircond dries the air, so evaporation can still be noticeable |
| Surface agitation | Waterfalls, strong filter outflow, air stones and top filters increase it |
| Tank shape | Wide, shallow tanks lose more than tall, narrow ones |
Because so many variables affect it, there's no single "normal" rate. Mark the water line on the glass with tape and watch for a week. If it drops at a steady rate and matches your conditions, it's evaporation.
The fan trade-off
A cooling fan is one of the cheapest ways to bring down tank temperature in hot weather, but it works by evaporating water. Expect to top up more often, sometimes daily in a small tank. Our aquarium cooling guide compares fans and chillers.
How to Top Up Safely
- Use dechlorinated water. Treat tap water with anti klorin for the volume you're adding. Don't top up straight from the tap. See our tap water guide.
- Match temperature roughly.
- Top up little and often rather than letting the level fall a lot. Big drops concentrate waste and can expose heaters or filter intakes.
- Keep the water above the filter intake and the heater's minimum line. A running heater out of water can crack.
- Add slowly, especially in small betta and shrimp tanks.
Find conditioners in water conditioners and additives.
Topping Up Is Not a Water Change
When water evaporates, only pure water leaves. Minerals, salts and dissolved waste stay behind and become more concentrated. If you only ever top up, the water slowly gets harder, more mineral-rich and dirtier, even though it looks full.
- Keep doing regular water changes of 20–30% weekly. See cara tukar air akuarium.
- White crust on the glass and lid is mineral residue left from evaporation. Wipe it off with a damp cloth or an algae scraper.
Salt doesn't evaporate either
If you're treating with garam ikan, top up with plain water only, not salted water, or the salt level climbs.
Marine Tanks: Salinity Creep
In saltwater tanks, evaporation is a bigger deal. The salt stays behind, so as the level drops, salinity rises. This stresses fish and corals.
- Top up with fresh RO or RO/DI water, never with saltwater.
- Check salinity with a refractometer or reliable hydrometer.
- Consider an automatic top-off (ATO) system with a reservoir of RO water. Many reef keepers in hot climates consider it essential.
- A chiller with a lid reduces evaporation compared with cooling fans.
Mix new saltwater only for water changes. See marine salt and our guide to marine salt and RO water.
Reducing Evaporation
- Use a lid or glass cover. It can cut evaporation a lot, and stops fish jumping out. Leave a small gap for air.
- Lower surface splash: point outlets slightly below the surface.
- Run fans only when needed, e.g. on a thermostat timer, in the hottest hours.
- Keep tanks away from windows, direct sun and aircond outlets.
- For ponds, partial shade from plants or a shade net reduces evaporation and algae.
Is It a Leak?
Check if:
- The level drops much faster than usual, or overnight.
- Water drops even with a lid on and the fan off.
- You see damp spots, water marks or puddles under the tank or cabinet.
- The floor or wall behind the tank is wet.
How to check for a leak
- Dry everything around the tank with a towel.
- Run tissue paper along every silicone seam and corner, outside the tank. Wet tissue shows where water is escaping.
- Check the filter, not just the tank. Canister filters, hoses, tap valves and the top-filter tray are common leak points. Hang-on filters can siphon water out if the intake gets blocked.
- Look under the cabinet, and lift the base mat if there is one.
- Check overflows and sumps if you have them.
If the tank itself is leaking, move the fish to a safe container and drain it. Small seam leaks can be resealed with aquarium-safe silicone once dry, but on older or larger tanks, it's often safer to replace the tank. Browse replacement glass tanks if needed.
FAQ
Kenapa air akuarium berkurang setiap hari?
Top up air akuarium perlu letak anti klorin tak?
Perlu. Air paip di Malaysia mengandungi klorin, jadi rawat air baru dengan anti klorin walaupun hanya untuk tambah sedikit air. Untuk akuarium air laut, tambah dengan air RO, bukan air masin.
Does a cooling fan make water evaporate faster?
Yes. Fans cool water by evaporation, so you'll need to top up more often.
Is topping up the same as a water change?
No. Topping up only replaces evaporated water. Waste and minerals stay in the tank, so regular water changes are still needed.
How do I stop evaporation completely?
You can't stop it, but a lid, less surface splash and keeping the tank out of the sun reduce it a lot. Automatic top-off systems make it hands-free.
Keep levels steady with water conditioners, glass tanks and thermometers from Malaysian sellers on FishyHub.
