Tankmates: Species tank preferred; only very calm small tankmates.
Feeding: Insectivores/micropredators. Overfeeding is a common cause of bloat and poor water quality. Wild-caught fish may need live or frozen food before accepting pellets.

Betta channoides gets its common name, the snakehead betta, from its broad, flattened head, which resembles a tiny Channa. Males are a glowing orange-red with black and white fin edges, and the whole fish stays under about 5 cm. It is a wild betta from the Mahakam basin in the Indonesian part of Borneo and a gem for a quiet, blackwater nano tank.
FishyHub lists captive-bred channoides from Malaysian hobbyists and wild-betta specialists, usually as pairs, with prices in RM. If you're used to the domestic ikan laga, expect a very different fish: shy, peaceful and a mouthbrooder rather than a bubble-nester.
Channoides and Betta albimarginata are close relatives in the same species group, and they look alike: both are small, reddish, mouthbrooding bettas with black-and-white fin trim. The differences are subtle and include head shape and fin markings, so the safest approach is to buy from a seller who keeps each species separately and labels them clearly. Mixing the two can lead to hybrids, which wild-betta keepers try to avoid.

Treat Malaysian tap water with anti klorin, and change small amounts often rather than large amounts occasionally. Soft local water usually suits channoides well, but the tannins from leaves can push pH down quickly in low-KH water. Check it now and then with a test kit.
Channoides are micro-predators and are happiest hunting moving food. Newly hatched or adult artemia, moina and grindal worms make a good rotation. Captive-bred fish may learn to take small frozen foods or fine pellets, but variety keeps them in condition. Feed little and often, and remove leftovers so the water stays clean.
Prices in RM reflect the fact that channoides are bred in small numbers by specialists. Proven pairs and well-coloured adults cost more than young fish. Check:
Small bettas ship well when packed properly, but for Sabah and Sarawak, ask the seller first.
The male broods the eggs in his mouth for about one to two weeks, then releases free-swimming fry.
It's possible with tiny, calm fish, but a species tank gives the best results and makes breeding easier.
Compare Betta channoides pairs and other wild bettas from Malaysian sellers, with photos and RM prices on each listing. Pick up daun ketapang, sponge filters and live feed to complete the tank.
