Freshwater, Planted & Marine Aquariums

Each type of aquarium has its own livestock, equipment and care routine:

• Freshwater community tanks bring together peaceful fish such as Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras and Guppies.
• Planted aquariums use aquatic plants for natural cover and cleaner water, and suit small fish and freshwater shrimp.
• Cichlid and species tanks focus on one group of fish, such as Cichlids, Discus or Bettas.
• Marine and reef aquariums keep saltwater fish, corals and invertebrates, and need stable salinity and more equipment. Clownfish host anemones in the wild but do not need one in the aquarium.

Freshwater vs Saltwater Fish

Freshwater and marine aquariums need very different setups, equipment and care. Choose fish for the system you keep, and never mix freshwater and marine livestock.

Aquarium Fish Size Matters

Many aquarium fish are sold as juveniles and grow considerably larger. Research expected adult size first, especially for Plecos, Cichlids, Tangs, large marine Angelfish and other species that can outgrow small aquariums.

Aquarium Fish Compatibility

Fish that look peaceful as juveniles may become territorial, predatory or very active as they mature. Check adult size, temperament, feeding behavior and water requirements before combining species in one aquarium.

Feeding Your Fish

Most aquarium fish do well fed once or twice a day, with only as much as they finish within a couple of minutes. Use a quality flake or pellet food as the staple, add variety with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworms, and give bottom dwellers sinking food.

Shrimp and Fish Together

Larger or carnivorous fish will eat shrimp, so keep shrimp in a shrimp-only tank or with small, peaceful fish, and check that medications are copper-free before using them in a shrimp tank.

Choosing Your First Tank

A larger tank is more forgiving than a small one, because water conditions change more slowly in a bigger volume. Pick the tank for the adult size and number of fish you plan to keep, and budget for a filter, a heater for tropical fish, lighting and a water conditioner.

Cycle Your Tank First

Let a new aquarium cycle for a few weeks before adding fish, so beneficial bacteria can build up to break down waste, then add fish gradually.

Choose Captive-Bred Fish Where You Can

Captive-bred fish are usually already used to aquarium life and foods, and choosing them reduces pressure on wild populations. Many popular species, from Bettas and Guppies to Clownfish, are widely captive-bred.

Quarantine New Aquarium Fish

Quarantine and observation reduce the risk of bringing parasites or disease into an established aquarium, especially when adding livestock from different breeders or sellers.
