Product Description

A Lake Malawi cichlid whose males blaze crimson and blue.

The Red Empress Cichlid (Protomelas taeniolatus) is a stunning Lake Malawi cichlid with dazzling male colouration and a semi-aggressive temperament, ideal for experienced keepers.

  • Water Conditions: The Red Empress Cichlid thrives in hard, alkaline water that replicates the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi. Aim for a temperature of 24–27°C (75–81°F), a pH between 7.8 and 8.6, and general hardness of 10–20 dGH. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and maintain nitrate below 20–30 ppm with regular testing. These cichlids are sensitive to sudden parameter swings, so stable conditions matter far more than chasing an exact number. Use a high-turnover filter—canister or sump—with strong surface agitation to keep dissolved oxygen high. A sand substrate suits their natural grazing behaviour and avoids damage to delicate mouths. Malawi cichlid salts can be used to buffer water, but only if your source water is soft and you can mix consistently. Perform 25–30% weekly water changes with dechlorinated water matched to tank temperature and pH, and avoid large, abrupt changes that can trigger stress, bloat, or territorial flare-ups. This species is hardy once acclimated, but it rewards conscientious water management with better colour, appetite, and longevity.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Because Protomelas taeniolatus is semi-aggressive rather than outright peaceful, tank mates should be robust, similarly sized, and able to hold their own without escalating into constant conflict. The best choices are other Lake Malawi haplochromines, including peacocks (Aulonocara), mild-mannered mbuna, and similar open-water cichlids. Avoid small tetras, guppies, danios, and delicate slow-moving species that may be bullied or eaten. Very aggressive mbuna—such as Melanochromis auratus—and overly timid fish are poor matches. Synodontis catfish from Lake Tanganyika or Malawi can work well as bottom-dwelling companions. If keeping a group, maintain a harem ratio of one male to three or four females to spread territorial attention; multiple males may fight, especially in smaller tanks. An all-male Malawi community can succeed in a large tank with careful species selection and dense rockwork, but watch for persistent chasing and fin damage. Quarantine new arrivals and observe for aggression before adding them to the main display.
  • Feeding Habits: In the wild, the Red Empress Cichlid grazes aufwuchs—algae, biofilm, and tiny invertebrates on rocks—so its captive diet should lean heavily toward vegetable and algae-based foods. Offer a staple spirulina pellet or flake, algae wafers, and blanched zucchini, spinach, peas, or cucumber. These foods support healthy digestion and reduce the risk of Malawi bloat, a serious condition linked to high-protein, low-fibre diets. Supplement two or three times weekly with small amounts of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or daphnia for protein, but do not make rich meaty foods the foundation of the diet. Feed two to three small meals daily, offering only what the fish can consume within about two minutes, and remove uneaten food to protect water quality. Juveniles at 4–7 cm need frequent, modest feedings to support growth, while adults benefit from controlled portions to prevent obesity. Observe appetite closely: a sudden refusal to eat, stringy faeces, or a swollen abdomen can signal digestive trouble or bloat and should prompt an immediate review of diet and water parameters.
  • Care Requirements: Plan for adult size when setting up—males can reach roughly 15–17 cm and females around 12–13 cm, so a 4-foot, 240-litre tank is a realistic minimum for a small group, with 300 litres or more preferred. The aquascape should include plenty of rocky caves and crevices for females to retreat into, plus open swimming space for males to display. Use a sand substrate, secure rockwork, and a tight-fitting lid. Drip-acclimate new arrivals over 30–45 minutes, especially if your retailer’s water differs in pH or hardness. Maintain excellent filtration and oxygenation, and avoid overcrowding with overly aggressive species. Sexing becomes easier with age: males develop intense red and blue colouration, egg spots, and a larger size, while females remain silver-brown with vertical barring. This species is a maternal mouthbrooder; if breeding occurs, the female may hold eggs for around three weeks and should not be disturbed. Always quarantine new livestock, keep a gentle observation routine, and choose tank mates with future adult size and temperament in mind. With stable water, a vegetable-rich diet, and thoughtful stocking, the Red Empress Cichlid can live for many years and remain one of the most eye-catching Lake Malawi cichlids available.
