Product Description

The term "Jewel Fish" is commonly used to refer to several cichlid species known for their vibrant and jewel-like colors. One of the most popular cichlids referred to as the "Jewel Cichlid" is Hemichromis bimaculatus, which is native to West Africa. Here are key features and care considerations for the Jewel Cichlid:

Jewel Cichlid (Hemichromis bimaculatus):

Appearance:

Jewel Cichlids are named for their dazzling colors, which include shades of red, blue, and green.
They often have distinctive patterns and spots, giving them a jewel-like appearance.
Size:

Adult Jewel Cichlids can reach lengths of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm).
Behavior:

Jewel Cichlids are known for their territorial and aggressive nature, especially during the breeding season.
They may establish territories and defend them vigorously.
Habitat:

Native to slow-moving and still waters in West Africa, Jewel Cichlids are often found in areas with vegetation and submerged structures.
Tank Setup:

Provide a tank with plenty of hiding spots, rocks, and driftwood.
They appreciate areas with vegetation and may use caves or structures for spawning.
Water Conditions:

Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
pH Level: 6.5-7.5
Water Hardness: 5-15 dGH
Diet:

Jewel Cichlids are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods.
Offer high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and supplement with live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
Breeding:

Jewel Cichlids are known for their distinctive breeding behavior.
Provide a flat surface or a spawning site for the female to lay eggs, and both parents are typically involved in guarding the fry.
Compatibility:

Due to their territorial nature, Jewel Cichlids may be aggressive, especially during the breeding season.
Choose tankmates carefully, avoiding smaller or timid fish.
Caution:

While Jewel Cichlids are popular and colorful, their aggression can be a challenge in community tanks. Ensure proper tank size and compatibility when keeping them with other fish.
Remember that individual fish may have varying temperaments, and care requirements can differ based on factors such as tank size and the specific environment provided. Always conduct thorough research and consider the specific needs of the fish you plan to keep in your aquarium.
