Akuarium Kecil Atas Meja: Nano Tank Ideas for Desks and Bedrooms
An akuarium kecil (small or nano tank) on your desk, bedside table or study corner is one of the nicest ways to keep fish in a Malaysian home or office. The key is to stock it with animals that truly fit: one betta, a colony of cherry shrimp, a few snails, or a small group of nano fish like chili rasbora. Small tanks are not easier than big ones. Their temperature and water quality change faster, so they need a gentle filter, a timed light, a spot out of the sun and small weekly water changes. Here's how to get it right.
What Counts as a Nano Tank?
| Size | Approx. volume | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 L (bowls, cubes) | 3–10 L | Snails, plants, a few shrimp; very hard for fish |
| 1 kaki (30 cm) | 12–15 L | Single betta, shrimp colony, nano fish |
| 1.5 kaki (45 cm) | 25–30 L | Betta with tankmates, small nano community |
| 2 kaki (60 cm) | 55–65 L | Beginner community tank (more stable) |
For an akuarium meja (desk tank), 1 to 1.5 kaki is the sweet spot: small enough for a desk or shelf, big enough to keep stable. Many sellers offer complete aquarium tank sets in these sizes.
The Big Problem: Heat Swings in Small Volumes
Small amounts of water heat up and cool down quickly. In Malaysia that matters in a few ways:
- Afternoon heat: a nano tank near a window or under a hot roof can climb past 32°C. Keep it out of direct sunlight.
- Aircond rooms: in a bedroom where the aircond runs all night, a small tank can drop several degrees by morning and warm again by afternoon. Bettas and most tropical fish dislike these swings. Keep it away from vents; a small adjustable heater can help in rooms that are cold for long hours.
- Office desks: offices are often air-conditioned on weekdays and warm on weekends. A thermometer tells you what's really happening.
- Water quality: one extra pinch of food or a dead snail affects 12 litres far more than 60.
Our cooling guide covers managing heat.
What Can Live in an Akuarium Kecil?
| Livestock | Minimum tank | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Betta (ikan laga), one | 1 kaki (about 12 L+) | Gentle filter, lid (they jump), warm stable water |
| Cherry shrimp (udang cherry) | 1 kaki | Great for desks; colonies breed in planted tanks |
| Nerite or other small snails | 1 kaki | Algae control |
| Chili rasbora / Boraras | 1 kaki for 6–8 | Tiny schooling fish, need a mature planted tank |
| Celestial pearl danio | 1.5 kaki | Shy; needs plants |
| Endler's or male guppies | 1.5 kaki | Males only, or the tank fills with fry |
| Pygmy corydoras | 1.5–2 kaki | Need sand and a small group |
What does not belong in a nano tank
- Goldfish: they grow large and produce lots of waste. A bowl is never suitable.
- Common plecos (bandaraya), oscars, arowana: these grow far too big.
- Several bettas together: males fight.
- Fish sold in tiny cups as "desk pets" without a filter: they suffer in unfiltered water.
Bowls vs Proper Nano Tanks
Bowls look cute but are hard on fish: small surface area for oxygen, no room for a filter, distorted curved glass and big temperature swings. If you love the look, use a bowl for plants, moss or a few snails, and put fish in a rectangular tank with a filter instead. Compare options in plastic tanks and bowls, and read our plastic vs glass aquarium guide.
Filtration and Lighting for Nano Tanks
Filter
- Small hang-on filters are popular because they don't take space inside the tank. Choose one with adjustable flow, as bettas and shrimp dislike strong current. See hang-on filters.
- Sponge filters run on an air pump, are gentle and safe for shrimp fry, and add oxygen.
- Cover the intake with a pre-filter sponge if you keep shrimp.
Light
- A small clip-on or built-in LED is enough for low-tech plants.
- Run it 6–8 hours a day on a timer; too much light in a small tank brings algae quickly.
- Avoid placing the tank under strong desk lamps for long hours, which can warm it.
Plants for an Akuarium Kecil Cantik
Live plants make a small tank more stable by absorbing waste. Easy picks that stay small:
- Anubias nana petite and Bucephalandra on stones
- Java moss or other mosses on a piece of wood
- Small Cryptocoryne (parva, wendtii)
- Floating plants like salvinia for shade (see our floating plants guide)
A mini aquascape with one rock, one small piece of wood and a few epiphytes looks great on a desk. Our beginner aquascape guide explains layout.
Nano Tank Setup Checklist
- Choose a stable, level surface that can take the weight (a 1 kaki tank weighs around 15–20 kg filled).
- Keep it out of direct sun and away from aircond vents.
- Add substrate, hardscape and plants.
- Fill with tap water treated with anti klorin.
- Run the filter for 2–4 weeks to cycle before adding animals.
- Add livestock slowly: shrimp or snails, or one betta.
- Use a thermometer and check it at different times of day.
Maintenance: Small and Often
- Water change: 20–30% weekly, with treated water at a similar temperature.
- Feed tiny amounts: a betta needs only a few pellets once or twice a day; shrimp need even less.
- Remove uneaten food within a few minutes.
- Top up evaporation with dechlorinated water.
- Rinse the filter sponge in old tank water every few weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a betta live in a small bowl?
It can survive for a while, but it won't thrive. A filtered tank of at least about 12 litres with stable temperature is much better.
Is a nano tank good for beginners?
It can be, if you stock it lightly and stay consistent with water changes. A 2 kaki tank is more forgiving if you want several species.
Do I need a heater for a desk aquarium in Malaysia?
Usually not, but in a room or office with long hours of air-conditioning a small heater keeps temperature steady.
