Cara Buat Aquascape untuk Pemula: Styles, Layout & First Scape

Wondering about cara buat aquascape? An aquascape is a planted aquarium arranged like a landscape: rocks and wood form the structure (hardscape), plants soften it, and fish bring it to life. For a first scape in Malaysia, start with a 2 kaki tank, a simple low-tech plant list, one type of rock or wood, and a decent LED. Plan the layout dry, plant densely, cycle the tank, and add fish only after a few weeks. The steps below take you from an empty tank to your first finished scape.

Choose a Style First

Style Look Difficulty Suits
Nature aquascape Wood and rock with mixed plants, like a forest or riverbank Easy–medium Most beginners
Jungle Dense, wild growth, floating plants, little visible substrate Easy Low-tech tanks, bettas, gouramis
Iwagumi Only stones, usually in odd numbers, with one or two carpet plants Hard Experienced keepers with CO2
Dutch Rows of colourful stem plants, no hardscape focus Hard High light, CO2, frequent trimming
Biotope Copies a real habitat, e.g. a Malaysian peat swamp Medium Keepers of one region's fish

For aquascape untuk pemula, nature or jungle is the safest choice. Iwagumi looks simple but is the least forgiving: there's nowhere for algae or mistakes to hide, and carpets usually need CO2. If you like the blackwater look, read our peat swamp biotope guide.

Budget Kit List for a First Aquascape

Item What to look for Notes
Tank 2 kaki (60 cm), ideally clear glass Bigger tanks are more stable; 1 kaki aquascape mini is harder
Light Aquarium LED sized to the tank length Aim for a light with adjustable brightness or a timer
Filter Hang-on or small canister, 4–6× tank volume per hour Gentle outflow, so plants aren't flattened
Substrate Aqua soil, or inert sand/gravel with root tabs See our soil aquascape guide
Hardscape One or two rock types, or driftwood Malaysian driftwood is affordable and widely available
Plants 6–10 bunches/pots of easy species Plant densely from day one
Tools Long tweezers, scissors, spatula Basic aquascaping tool sets are enough
Water care Anti klorin, test kit Malaysian tap water is chlorinated
Optional Timer plug, air pump, CO2 CO2 can come later

Cara Buat Aquascape: Step by Step

Step 1: Pick the spot

Place the tank out of direct sunlight and away from windows. Sun on glass causes algae and overheats water. Make sure the stand is level and there's a power point nearby.

Step 2: Prepare the hardscape

Soak driftwood until it sinks and the worst tannins are out (see our Malaysian driftwood guide). Scrub rocks and test them with vinegar if you're not sure they're inert.

Step 3: Lay the substrate

Pour soil or sand, sloping from about 4 cm at the front to 8 cm or more at the back. The slope adds depth to the scape.

Step 4: Build the layout (rule of thirds)

Imagine the tank front divided into three vertical sections. Put your main rock or wood (the focal point) about one-third from the left or right, not dead centre. Then:

  • Use one dominant piece and a few smaller supporting pieces.
  • Choose odd numbers of stones (3, 5, 7).
  • Angle stones and branches the same way, as if water or wind shaped them.
  • Leave open space (negative space) for fish to swim and the eye to rest.

Take a photo from the front and adjust until it looks balanced.

Step 5: Plant

Spray the substrate damp and plant with tweezers before filling:

  • Foreground: short plants or a carpet (e.g. Cryptocoryne parva, dwarf sag).
  • Midground: crypts, anubias and Bucephalandra on rocks and wood.
  • Background: tall stem plants or vallisneria to hide equipment.
  • On wood: tie or glue anubias, java fern and moss.

Plant densely. A heavily planted tank uses nutrients before algae can.

Step 6: Fill and switch on

Fill slowly onto a plate or plastic bag. Add anti klorin. Start the filter and set the light to 6 hours a day at first, rising to about 7–8 hours over the next month.

Step 7: Cycle and maintain

Do 30–50% water changes two or three times a week for the first two weeks, especially with new soil. Test ammonia and nitrite.

Step 8: Add livestock

After 3–6 weeks, start with hardy algae eaters such as nerite snails or otocinclus, then a small school of fish. Shrimp go in last.

Easy Plants for a First Scape (No CO2)

  • Anubias nana and java fern (on wood or rock)
  • Cryptocoryne wendtii and other crypts (Malaysia has native crypts)
  • Java moss and Christmas moss
  • Vallisneria and Sagittaria
  • Bucephalandra (Borneo native, slow but tough)
  • Floating plants for a jungle look

More options are in our low-tech plant guide.

Malaysian Conditions to Plan For

  • Heat: tanks often sit at 28–31°C. Most tropical plants are fine, but some carpets and red plants struggle. Good surface movement and an air pump help keep oxygen up.
  • Soft tap water: good for plants and soft-water fish, but test pH and KH, especially on soil.
  • Power cuts: a planted tank survives a short outage better than a bare one, but keep a battery air pump for longer cuts.
  • Air-conditioned rooms: if the aircond runs long hours, temperature can swing; keep the tank away from vents.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Too much light, too soon leads to algae blooms. Start short, increase slowly.
  2. Too few plants: sparse planting invites algae.
  3. Too many hardscape materials: stick to one rock type and one wood type.
  4. Stocking on day one: wait for the cycle.
  5. Choosing iwagumi carpets without CO2: they usually melt or fill with algae.

Fish for a Beginner Aquascape

Small schooling fish suit scapes best: harlequin rasbora, chili rasbora, ember or neon tetras, a betta in smaller tanks, otocinclus and cherry shrimp. Avoid diggers and plant-eaters such as goldfish and large cichlids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need CO2 for an aquascape?

No. Nature and jungle scapes with low-tech plants grow well without it. CO2 is mainly needed for carpets, Dutch tanks and fast red stem plants.

How long should the aquascape light be on?

Start at about 6 hours a day for a new tank and build up to 7–8 hours. A timer plug keeps it consistent.

Is iwagumi good for beginners?

Usually not. It needs a clean carpet, strong light and CO2, and algae is very visible. Try a nature style first.
