Daun Ketapang untuk Ikan: Catappa Leaf Benefits, Dosage & Which Fish Like It

Daun ketapang untuk ikan (catappa or Indian almond leaf) is the dried leaf of the ketapang tree, Terminalia catappa, which grows all over Malaysia. Dropped into a tank, it slowly releases tannins and humic substances that tint the water tea-brown, lower pH slightly and soften the water. These conditions mimic the blackwater streams where many Southeast Asian fish live. A good starting dose is about 1 medium dried leaf (15–20 cm) per 30–40 litres, replaced every 2–4 weeks as it breaks down. It suits ikan laga, wild bettas, rasboras, gouramis, discus and shrimp. It isn't a medicine, so don't rely on it instead of real treatment.

What Daun Ketapang Does in the Aquarium

Tannins and blackwater

Ketapang leaves contain tannins, the same compounds that stain tea and driftwood. In the tank they:

  • Tint the water amber or tea-brown, which many fish find calming
  • Lower pH a little, mainly in soft water with low KH
  • Bind some metals and soften the water slightly
  • Reduce light penetration, so shy fish feel safer

This recreates the peat-swamp and forest-stream water that wild bettas, chocolate gouramis and many rasboras come from. Malaysia has these blackwater habitats in places like Selangor and Pahang's peat swamps, and in Sarawak.

Mild antibacterial and antifungal effects

Hobbyists have long used ketapang for stressed or newly bought bettas, and laboratory studies on Terminalia catappa extracts have reported antibacterial and antifungal activity. In the tank the effect is mild. Think of it as supportive care that may help fish recover from stress and minor fin damage, not as a cure. For real disease, use proper ubat ikan and see our guide to why aquarium fish die.

Natural cover and food

Leaves sink and become hiding spots. As they soften, biofilm grows on them, which shrimp and fry graze on.

Daun Ketapang Dosage per Litre

There's no exact science here, because leaves vary in size and tannin content. These are commonly used starting points:

Use Leaf amount Notes
General tannin tint, community tank 1 medium leaf per 30–40 L Replace every 2–4 weeks
Betta tank (5–20 L) Half to one small leaf, or a few pieces Break larger leaves into pieces
Betta breeding or conditioning tank 1 leaf per 10–20 L Darker water, lower pH
Shrimp tank 1 small leaf per 20–40 L Shrimp eat the softened leaf
Quarantine or recovery tank 1 leaf per 10–20 L Supportive only, with water changes

Start low. If the water gets darker than you like, take a leaf out or do a water change. Activated carbon in the filter will remove the tint.

If your tap water has very low KH, ketapang can drop pH more than expected. Test pH after the first week. Our aquarium pH guide explains why.

Daun Ketapang Kering: Collect or Buy?

Ketapang trees are common along Malaysian beaches, schools, parks and old housing estates, so many keepers collect their own. Both options can work.

Collecting your own

  • Pick naturally fallen, brown leaves. Fresh green leaves have fewer tannins and can rot.
  • Avoid roadside trees near heavy traffic, and parks that are sprayed with pesticide or herbicide.
  • Rinse well under running water to remove dirt, insects and bird droppings.
  • Dry fully in the sun or indoors for several days until crisp, then store in a dry container.
  • Some keepers boil or pour hot water over the leaves before use to clean them and release tannins faster.

Buying dried leaves

Packed daun ketapang kering from aquarium sellers is graded, cleaned and dried, and usually comes from known sources. It's convenient for city keepers in condos with no tree nearby. Look under Water Condition Additives or on betta listings, and check the listing for leaf size and quantity.

Leaves vs Extract vs Ketapang Tea

Form How it works Pros Cons
Whole dried leaves Sink and leach slowly Natural look, shrimp graze on them, gradual Break down and need removing
Leaf pieces or crushed leaf in a bag Faster release, in filter or corner Easy to remove Less natural look
Liquid extract Measured dose of tannins Precise, no debris Less "natural", cost per dose
Home-brewed ketapang tea Steep leaves in hot water, add the liquid Controlled, no leaf debris in tank Needs fridge storage, can spoil

For ketapang tea: steep a few leaves in hot water, let it cool, and add a little at a time when you change water. Keep it covered in the fridge and use within a week.

Daun Ketapang untuk Ikan: Which Fish Benefit?

Good candidates

  • Ikan laga (betta): the classic use. Keepers add it for new fish, after fights or fin damage, and in breeding tanks. See our betta care guide.
  • Wild bettas (e.g. Betta imbellis, Betta persephone): blackwater species that need soft, tannin-stained water.
  • Rasboras and chili rasbora, tetras, gouramis and pencilfish
  • Discus, apistogramma and angelfish
  • Shrimp: they graze on softened leaves
  • Corydoras and loaches: they like the leaf litter

Use with caution

  • Guppies, mollies and platies prefer harder, alkaline water. A leaf won't hurt, but don't use ketapang to push pH down.
  • African cichlids need high pH and hardness, so skip it.
  • Goldfish and koi fish don't need it.

Tips and Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Don't overdose in small tanks. A big leaf in a 5 L betta bowl can drop pH quickly.
  2. Remove soggy leaves that have turned into a skeleton or fallen apart, especially in tanks without shrimp.
  3. Keep doing water changes. Ketapang doesn't replace water changes or a filter.
  4. Expect brown water. It's harmless. If you prefer clear water, use fewer leaves or run carbon.
  5. Don't use leaves from unknown sprayed areas.
  6. Combine with driftwood for a longer-lasting effect. See our Malaysian driftwood guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does daun ketapang cure fish diseases?

No. It has mild antibacterial properties and helps reduce stress, but it isn't a substitute for proper medication when fish are clearly sick.

Why has my aquarium water turned brown?

That's the tannins from the leaf, and it's harmless. Use fewer leaves or add activated carbon to the filter if you want clearer water.

How long does a ketapang leaf last in the tank?

Usually 2–4 weeks, depending on temperature and how many shrimp or snails eat it. In warm Malaysian tanks, leaves tend to break down faster.

Find dried daun ketapang and blackwater conditioners under Water Condition Additives, and browse ikan laga (bettas) from Malaysian breeders on FishyHub. Prices are in RM, and you can ask each seller about leaf size and grade.
