Tankmates: Can live with small, calm fish (rasboras, small Corydoras) in a soft-water planted tank; avoid other labyrinth fish and fin nippers. Hybridises with B. splendens and other splendens-complex species - do not mix.
Feeding: Insectivores/micropredators. Overfeeding is a common cause of bloat and poor water quality. Wild-caught fish may need live or frozen food before accepting pellets.

Betta imbellis, often called the peaceful betta or crescent betta, is a wild betta species found in Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. It is a close cousin of the domestic fighting fish, but with short fins, a dark body that glows blue-green, and a red-and-blue crescent at the edge of the tail. Among hobbyists it is one of the most approachable kinds of ikan laga liar (wild betta).
Imbellis suits keepers who enjoy natural-looking planted or blackwater tanks and want to watch real wild-type behaviour. FishyHub lists imbellis from Malaysian sellers and breeders, with prices in RM.
Imbellis lives in shallow, slow, heavily vegetated waters, including swampy areas, rice-field edges and ditches. Like many of Malaysia's roughly 28 wild betta species, its habitat is under pressure from land clearing. Choose captive-bred fish rather than wild-caught ones, and ask the seller where the fish came from.
Imbellis can cross with Betta splendens, and many "wild-type" bettas sold in shops are hybrids. If you want pure imbellis, ask whether the line is kept pure or carries a known locality name.
| Care point | Betta imbellis |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–28°C. Malaysian rooms (26–31°C) are at the warm end, so keep the tank shaded and cool. |
| Minimum tank | 1 kaki (30 cm), about 12–15 litres for one fish or a pair; 2 kaki (60 cm, 55–65 L) for a small group |
| Temperament | Milder than splendens, but males still spar; give space and cover |
| Diet | Small live or frozen foods (daphnia, artemia, bloodworm) plus quality micro pellets |
| Beginner-friendly? | Yes, for a first wild betta, if water is kept soft and clean |
Imbellis does best in a calm, dim tank with plenty of plants and floating cover. Driftwood, leaf litter and a few daun ketapang create soft, tea-coloured water like its natural home. A sponge filter is enough. Keep a tight lid, as wild bettas are good jumpers.
Our soft tap water is helpful here, but it still needs anti klorin. Small, regular water changes keep conditions stable. Avoid sudden big changes in pH or temperature, which stress wild fish.
Unlike domestic bettas, imbellis can sometimes be kept as a pair or in a group in a larger planted tank. Males may still display and spar, so watch for a fish that is being chased constantly and separate it if needed.
Imbellis is a bubble nester. The male builds a nest under a floating leaf, and the pair spawn beneath it. Calm water and floating plants help. Many hobbyists remove the female after spawning and let the male guard the eggs.
Prices in RM vary with purity, locality and colour. Buyers in Sabah and Sarawak should check with the seller before ordering live fish.
It is calmer than Betta splendens, but "peaceful" is relative. Males still compete, so give them room and plants.
No. If anything, keep it cool by placing the tank away from windows and hot rooms.
