Halfmoon Betta (Halfmoon rosetail fancy)

Discover the majestic Halfmoon Rosetail Fancy Betta — an aggressive showstopper with dramatic flowing fins, thriving in low-pH aquarium setups.

• Water Conditions — Low pH Environment: The Halfmoon Rosetail Fancy Betta is a true acidophilic species, requiring soft, acidic water conditions to thrive. Maintain a pH range between 5.5 and 6.8, as these fish originate from blackwater habitats in Southeast Asia where tannin-rich peat and leaf litter naturally lower the pH. A stable temperature between 26°C and 30°C is essential, with 28°C being the ideal sweet spot for optimal metabolism and immune function. Water hardness should be kept soft (4–6 dGH) to mimic their natural habitat. Regular weekly water changes of 20–25% are critical, but always use a dedicated conditioning product and consider adding Indian almond leaves or alder cones to help maintain the low pH and release beneficial tannins that reduce stress, promote healing, and replicate the species' native blackwater chemistry.
• Tank Mates — A Solitary King: Due to the aggressive temperament intrinsic to this strain, the Halfmoon Rosetail Fancy Betta should typically be housed alone. Male bettas are fiercely territorial and will attack any other male betta or fish with long, colourful fins, interpreting them as rivals. Even females may be attacked if they are introduced to his territory. When selecting tank mates, consider only fast-moving, non-fin-nipping bottom dwellers that thrive in low pH. Suitable companions may include small shoals of pygmy corydoras, kuhli loaches, or nerite snails. However, always provide ample hiding spots with dense plant cover, driftwood caves, and floating vegetation to break sightlines and reduce stress. For the vast majority of hobbyists, a species-only aquarium between 20 and 40 litres is the most reliable and humane housing solution for this magnificent but combative fish.
• Feeding Habits — A Carnivorous Palate: As a carnivorous species, the Halfmoon Rosetail Fancy Betta requires a protein-rich diet to maintain its spectacular finnage and vibrant colouration. Offer a variety of high-quality betta pellets as the staple, ensuring the protein content is above 45%. Supplement this with live or frozen foods at least three to four times a week, including bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae. These nutritious treats not only satisfy their instinctive hunting behaviour but also provide essential fatty acids and carotenoids that enhance colour intensity and promote healthy fin growth. Feed small portions two to three times daily, offering only what can be consumed within two minutes to prevent overfeeding and water quality deterioration. Do not feed flake food designed for tropical community fish, as these are often too low in protein and high in plant matter that bettas cannot efficiently digest.
• Care Requirements: Caring for a Halfmoon Rosetail Fancy Betta demands a moderate to advanced level of aquatic husbandry. The rosetail trait, while visually stunning, carries additional fin weight that makes the fish more susceptible to fin damage and fungal infections. Ensure your filtration system produces gentle water flow — strong currents will tire the fish and cause fin damage. A sponge filter or a heavily baffled HOB filter is recommended. Keep water parameters stable with a liquid test kit and act immediately on any ammonia or nitrite spike. Monitor for common ailments such as fin rot, ich, and velvet, which thrive in unstable conditions. Quarantine any new additions, and always use a heater with a reliable thermostat. The tank should have a tight-fitting lid, as bettas are renowned jumpers. Provide resting spots near the surface, such as floating betta leaves or broad-leafed plants like anubias, enabling the fish to rest comfortably without expending excessive energy. With meticulous care and a consistent routine, your Halfmoon Rosetail Fancy Betta will display its magnificent tail in full glory for 3–5 years.
• Size and Appearance: Mature specimens reach a compact size of 6cm to 7cm in length, though the voluminous rosetail finnage can make the fish appear considerably larger. The rosetail phenotype exhibits extensive branching in the caudal fin rays, creating a ruffled, rose-petal overlapping effect that extends well beyond the classic halfmoon 180-degree spread. Each individual displays unique colouration, from vivid royal blues and deep reds to iridescent turquoise and multicolour marble patterns. The impressive dorsal and anal fins complement the dramatic tail, creating one of the most elaborate and breathtaking displays in the ornamental fish hobby.
• Ideal Aquascaping: Recreate a natural blackwater biotope with a dark, sandy substrate, driftwood, and a scattering of dried leaves. Dense planting with Java fern, Cryptocoryne, and floating plants such as Salvinia or Amazon frogbit will diffuse lighting and create dappled shade, making these fish feel secure and display their most vibrant colours. Avoid sharp-edged hardscape that could snag the delicate rosetail fins. A dimly lit aquarium with blackwater tea-stained water not only meets the low pH requirement but also provides the most flattering and natural showcase for this extraordinary centrepiece fish.
