Guppy (Snakeskin Blue Flower)

A thumbnail-sized blue flower in snakeskin, drifting through low-pH waters.

The Snakeskin Blue Flower is a peaceful, stunning small fish that thrives in low pH water. Perfect for nano community tanks and planted aquariums.

• Water Conditions: The Snakeskin Blue Flower is a blackwater species that demands soft, acidic water to truly thrive. Aim for a pH between 5.5 and 6.8, with a general hardness (dGH) of 2–8 and carbonate hardness (dKH) of 1–4. Temperatures should be maintained between 24–27°C (75–81°F) using a reliable heater, as sudden fluctuations can stress these delicate fish. They are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, so a well-cycled, mature filter is essential—ammonia and nitrite must always read zero, and nitrate should stay below 20 ppm. A gentle to moderate water flow is ideal; sponge filters, air-driven box filters, or canister filters with a spray bar work well. To maintain the low pH naturally, incorporate Indian almond leaves, driftwood, or peat moss in the aquarium—these release tannins that not only lower pH but also provide antibacterial benefits and mimic the fish’s natural habitat. Weekly water changes of 20–30% using RO/DI water or peat-filtered tap water will keep conditions stable. Regular testing with a liquid test kit is strongly recommended, as the Snakeskin Blue Flower does not tolerate unstable parameters.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Because of their peaceful temperament and specific water requirements, the Snakeskin Blue Flower does best with other small, calm species that enjoy soft, acidic water. Ideal tank mates include small tetras such as neon, cardinal, green neon, and rummy-nose tetras; rasboras like chili, harlequin, and lambchop; bottom dwellers such as pygmy corydoras, panda corydoras, and otocinclus catfish; and peaceful dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma borellii or Apistogramma agassizii. Avoid any fish that prefer hard, alkaline water—these will not only suffer but can also cause stress to your Snakeskin Blue Flower. Aggressive or fin-nipping species like tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and large cichlids are a definite no. Likewise, avoid predatory fish that could eat a 3–4 cm fish. Invertebrates are hit or miss: small shrimp may be eaten, but larger Amano shrimp are usually safe, and snails are completely ignored. Since the Snakeskin Blue Flower is a schooling fish, keep them in groups of at least six to eight individuals. A larger group reduces stress, encourages natural behavior, and makes the fish more visible and colorful in the aquarium.
• Feeding Habits: The Snakeskin Blue Flower is an omnivore with a strong preference for small, protein-rich foods. Their tiny mouths mean they cannot handle large pellets or flakes, so choose micro pellets, crushed flakes, and frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworms. For optimal health and coloration, offer a varied diet that includes foods rich in astaxanthin or spirulina. Feed two to three times a day, but only as much as they can consume within two minutes—overfeeding is a common mistake that leads to bloating and water quality issues. In a mature, planted aquarium, they will also graze on microfauna and algae, but this should not replace regular feedings. If you plan to breed them, condition the adults with live foods for a few weeks before spawning. Because they are timid eaters, avoid keeping them with aggressive or fast-eating tank mates that might outcompete them for food.
• Care Requirements: The Snakeskin Blue Flower is a rewarding fish for aquarists who can provide stable, soft, acidic water. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (40 liters) is suitable for a small group of six, but a 20-gallon tank or larger is better for a bigger school and more stable water parameters. Aquascape with plenty of live plants—especially floating plants and mosses—as well as driftwood, leaf litter, and caves to create hiding spots and replicate their natural blackwater environment. These fish are peaceful but can be shy, so dither fish like small rasboras can help them feel more secure and outgoing. Maintenance includes weekly water changes, regular filter cleaning (using tank water to preserve beneficial bacteria), and consistent testing of pH, temperature, and nitrogen compounds. When introducing new fish, always use the drip acclimation method over 1–2 hours, as they are sensitive to sudden changes in pH and temperature. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent disease. With proper care, the Snakeskin Blue Flower can live for 3–5 years and will reward you with its stunning colors and peaceful demeanor. Breeding is possible in a dedicated soft-water setup, though it is not necessary for enjoyment. Overall, this fish is best suited for intermediate aquarists or beginners willing to pay close attention to water chemistry.
