Product Description

Silver flanked, black-tailed, and at home only in water that runs hard and alkaline.

The Silverado Black Tail is a peaceful, high-pH livebearer perfect for community tanks. Its striking silver body and black tail make it a stunning addition.

  • Water Conditions: The Silverado Black Tail thrives in alkaline, hard water with a pH between 7.2 and 8.5. It is essential to maintain a stable pH, as sudden fluctuations can cause stress and illness. Water hardness should be in the range of 10–20 dGH. Temperature should be kept between 22°C and 28°C (72°F–82°F). These fish are sensitive to poor water quality, so ammonia and nitrite must always read zero, and nitrate should be kept below 20 ppm. A well-filtered tank with a gentle to moderate water flow is ideal. Because they prefer high pH, avoid using driftwood or Indian almond leaves, which can lower pH. Instead, use crushed coral, limestone rocks, or aragonite sand to naturally buffer the water and keep it alkaline. Regular partial water changes of 20–25% per week are necessary to maintain pristine conditions. Always acclimate new fish slowly using the drip method to avoid shock from pH or temperature differences.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: As a peaceful species, the Silverado Black Tail does well in a community aquarium with other non-aggressive fish that share similar water parameters. Ideal tank mates include other livebearers such as platies, mollies, swordtails, and guppies. Endler's livebearers also make excellent companions. You can also keep them with peaceful bottom-dwellers like Corydoras catfish (provided the species tolerates harder water), bristlenose plecos, and small peaceful loaches. Invertebrates such as nerite snails and Amano shrimp are also safe. Avoid keeping them with fin-nippers like tiger barbs, serpae tetras, or aggressive cichlids. Large predatory fish should be avoided as they may eat the Silverado Black Tail. Also, avoid fish that prefer soft, acidic water, such as discus, cardinal tetras, and German blue rams, as they will not thrive in the same conditions. When keeping multiple males, provide plenty of space and hiding spots to reduce aggression. A good ratio is one male to two or three females to prevent harassment.
  • Feeding Habits: The Silverado Black Tail is an omnivore with a strong herbivorous inclination. In the wild, it grazes on algae and biofilm, so a diet rich in plant matter is essential for long-term health. Offer high-quality flake food or micro-pellets formulated for livebearers as the staple. Supplement with spirulina-based foods, blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, or nori. These fish also relish live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and cyclops, which help boost coloration and condition them for breeding. Feed two to three times daily, offering only as much as they can consume in two to three minutes. Overfeeding leads to obesity, constipation, and poor water quality. Because they are constant grazers, it is beneficial to have live plants or algae in the tank for them to nibble on. A varied diet will keep their immune system strong and their silver and black coloration vibrant.
  • Care Requirements: The Silverado Black Tail is a hardy fish, but it requires specific care to thrive. A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is acceptable for a small group, but 60 litres (15 gallons) or more is recommended for a community setup. The tank should be well-established and fully cycled before adding fish. Provide plenty of live or artificial plants, as well as open swimming areas. A tight-fitting lid is important because these fish can jump. Maintain a consistent temperature and avoid sudden changes. Perform regular water changes of 20–25% weekly, using a gravel vacuum to remove debris. Test water parameters frequently, especially pH and hardness, to ensure they remain stable. Because they are livebearers, they breed readily. If you do not want fry, keep only males or separate males and females. Females can store sperm and produce multiple batches of fry from a single mating. Provide hiding spots for fry if you intend to raise them. Quarantine new fish for at least two weeks before adding them to the main tank to prevent disease introduction. Watch for signs of illness such as clamped fins, lethargy, or white spots. With proper care, they can live for 2–3 years.
