Product Description

She stores sperm for months, birthing live young long after the males are gone.

Female guppy – peaceful, hardy livebearer perfect for community tanks. Ideal for beginners, adds colour and life to freshwater aquariums.

  • Water Conditions: Female guppies are highly adaptable but thrive in stable, well-oxygenated water. Maintain a temperature between 22–28°C (72–82°F), with 24–26°C being ideal. pH should be neutral to slightly alkaline, around 6.8–7.8, and general hardness (GH) between 8–12 dGH. They tolerate a range of conditions but avoid extremes. Ammonia and nitrite must always read 0 ppm, and nitrate should be kept below 20 ppm through regular partial water changes (20–25% weekly). Use a reliable filter and consider a gentle air stone for surface agitation. Avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature or pH, as stress can lead to disease. A mature, cycled tank is essential. Note: the size range shown as 0–0 cm is a placeholder; adult females typically reach 3–6 cm (1.2–2.4 inches).
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Female guppies are peaceful and do well in community aquariums with other non-aggressive species. Ideal tank mates include other livebearers such as mollies, platies, and swordtails; small rasboras (harlequin, chili); peaceful tetras (neon, cardinal, glowlight); corydoras catfish; otocinclus; and small loaches like kuhli loaches. Avoid fin-nippers such as tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and Buenos Aires tetras, as they may harass guppies. Also avoid large or predatory fish, including most cichlids, angelfish (they may eat fry), and any fish large enough to swallow a guppy. If you keep males and females together, expect breeding; a ratio of 2–3 females per male reduces stress on females. If you do not want fry, keep only females—though remember females can store sperm for months and may still give birth. Invertebrates like cherry shrimp and snails are generally safe. Always quarantine new additions to prevent introducing disease.
  • Feeding Habits: Guppies are omnivores and enthusiastic eaters. Offer a varied diet for optimal health and colour. High-quality flake or micro-pellet food should form the staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and white worms. Vegetable matter is important—feed spirulina-based flakes, blanched zucchini, cucumber, or spinach a few times a week. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily, only what they can consume in 1–2 minutes. Overfeeding leads to water quality issues and fatty liver disease. Pregnant females benefit from increased protein (e.g., more live/frozen foods) to support fry development. Because they are surface to mid-water feeders, ensure food is accessible; floating foods work well. Remove uneaten food to avoid fouling the water. Guppies will also graze on algae and microorganisms in a well-established tank, but this should not replace regular feeding.
  • Care Requirements: Provide a tank of at least 10 gallons (38 litres) for a small group of females, though 20 gallons (76 litres) or more is better for stable water conditions. Use a gentle filter and a heater to maintain consistent temperature. Decorate with live plants such as java moss, hornwort, guppy grass, and floating plants like frogbit—these provide hiding spots, reduce stress, and help maintain water quality. Female guppies are active and social; keep them in groups of at least 3–4 to reduce aggression and encourage natural behaviour. Acclimate new fish using the drip method over 30–60 minutes. Perform weekly water changes of 20–25%, vacuuming the substrate to remove debris. Monitor for common diseases like fin rot, ich, and columnaris; early treatment in a quarantine tank is best. Lifespan is typically 2–3 years with good care. Avoid overcrowding, as this leads to stress and disease. Also, be aware that female guppies can become pregnant without a male present due to sperm storage—plan accordingly.
  • Breeding & Fry Care (Additional Care Note): Female guppies are livebearers and can give birth to 20–60+ fry every 28–35 days. If you keep males and females together, you will soon have a thriving colony. To raise fry, provide plenty of fine-leaved plants or a breeding net/box so newborns can hide from adults (including the mother). Feed fry finely crushed flakes, microworms, or baby brine shrimp several times daily. Separate sexes at 4–6 weeks if you want to control breeding. Remember that females can store sperm for up to 6 months, so a single mating can produce multiple broods. This makes the female guppy an excellent choice for hobbyists interested in genetics, colour strains, and easy breeding projects. Always ensure the tank is mature and stable before adding fry.
