• Water Conditions: The Endler Blue Star thrives in stable, tropical freshwater conditions with a temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F). They prefer a pH between 6.8 and 8.0, with soft to moderately hard water and a general hardness (GH) of 8 to 20 dGH. These fish are quite adaptable but notoriously sensitive to sudden shifts in water chemistry, so regular weekly partial water changes of 20–30% are strongly recommended. A well-filtered aquarium with gentle to moderate flow replicates their natural habitat in the freshwater lagoons and streams of Venezuela. While they can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures temporarily, prolonged exposure below 22°C (71°F) will stress them and increase susceptibility to disease. Always use a reliable heater and thermometer to maintain a consistent environment, as fluctuations are the leading cause of health issues in Endlers.
• Aquarium Setup and Tank Size: Although small in size — typically reaching only 2.5 to 4 cm (1 to 1.5 inches) in length — the Endler Blue Star is an active, curious swimmer that appreciates space to roam. A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of 5 to 6 individuals, with larger tanks required for breeding colonies. Because they are livebearers, they will breed readily, and a densely planted aquarium with Java moss, Hornwort, or dwarf sagittaria offers essential cover for fry to evade predation. Ensure the tank has a snug-fitting lid, as Endlers are accomplished jumpers and can easily escape from open aquaria.
• Suitable Tank Mates: The Endler Blue Star is a peaceful, sociable species that coexists harmoniously with a wide range of community fish of similar size and temperament. Ideal companions include other nano species such as neon tetras, ember tetras, celestial pearl danios, chili rasboras, and dwarf corydoras. They also fare well with shrimp species like cherry shrimp or amano shrimp, which occupy a different ecological niche and rarely conflict. Avoid keeping them with larger, aggressive fish — such as angelfish, oscars, or adult bettas — which may view Endlers as food or engage in fin-nipping behaviour. It is generally best to keep them in a species-only tank if you wish to maintain a pure-bred line, as Endlers will readily hybridise with common guppies (Poecilia reticulata), diluting their distinctive Blue Star colouration over successive generations.
• Feeding Habits: The Endler Blue Star is an omnivorous micropredator with a hearty appetite. In the wild, they feed on small insects, algae, and zooplankton, and in captivity, they accept a varied diet with enthusiasm. Provide high-quality micro-pellets or finely crushed flake food as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, microworms, and finely chopped bloodworms. These protein-rich treats enhance colouration and encourage natural foraging behaviour. Additionally, they graze on biofilm and soft green algae growing on hardscape and plant leaves, so do not over-clean the aquarium. Feed small portions two to three times daily, offering only what they can consume within two minutes to prevent overfeeding, which can pollute the water and lead to digestive issues. A varied diet is key to maintaining the vibrant blue iridescence that defines this strain.
• Care Requirements: The Endler Blue Star is remarkably hardy and forgiving, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. They do not require specialised care beyond stable water parameters and regular maintenance. Monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels weekly, keeping ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm and nitrates below 20 ppm. These fish are moderately social and should always be kept in groups of at least five, as solitary individuals become stressed and may display muted colours. Breeding occurs readily in the home aquarium; females give birth to live young every 23 to 30 days, producing between 5 and 25 fry per brood. If breeding is not desired, simply remove adults after noticing gravid females with darkened gravid spots.
