Product Description

A serpent's skin, a flame for a tail—drifting through acidic waters.

Snake Skin Fire Tail Guppy: a peaceful, low-pH livebearer with striking snakeskin patterning and a vivid fiery tail, perfect for planted nano aquariums.

  • Water Conditions: The Snake Skin Fire Tail Guppy thrives in soft, acidic to neutral water, making it an excellent choice for aquarists who keep low-pH setups. Aim for a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, with a general hardness (GH) of 4–12 dGH and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 2–8 dKH. Temperatures should be maintained between 22°C and 28°C (72°F–82°F), with the ideal range sitting around 24°C–26°C for steady metabolism and vibrant colouration. These guppies are sensitive to sudden parameter shifts, so stability matters far more than chasing a specific number. Ammonia and nitrite must always read 0 ppm, and nitrate should be kept below 20 ppm through regular partial water changes. Because they originate from soft, leaf-litter-stained waters, they benefit from botanicals such as Indian almond leaves, alder cones, or driftwood, which release tannins and naturally lower pH while providing a gentle antibacterial effect. Always acclimatise new arrivals using the drip method over 45–60 minutes to prevent osmotic shock. Avoid hard, alkaline tap water unless it is pre-treated with RO/DI water or peat filtration. A gentle flow from a sponge filter or air-driven box filter is ideal; strong currents will stress these small livebearers and make feeding difficult.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Peaceful by nature, the Snake Skin Fire Tail Guppy does best in a calm community aquarium where it will not be bullied or outcompeted for food. Excellent tank mates include small tetras such as neon, ember, and cardinal tetras, micro rasboras like chili and kubotai, and bottom dwellers such as Corydoras pygmaeus, otocinclus, and dwarf anchor catfish. Shrimp species including cherry, amano, and crystal red shrimp are generally ignored, and nerite or ramshorn snails make fine additions. Other peaceful livebearers, such as endlers and smaller platies, can work well provided the tank is spacious enough. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and Buenos Aires tetras, which will shred the guppy's flowing tail. Likewise, steer clear of large cichlids, angelfish, bettas, goldfish, and any fish big enough to view a 3–4 cm guppy as a snack. When keeping multiple guppies, maintain a ratio of at least two to three females per male to spread breeding attention and reduce harassment. A well-planted tank with floating plants, moss, and dense stem plants gives females and fry valuable hiding spots and helps maintain the low-pH, low-stress environment these fish prefer.
  • Feeding Habits: Snake Skin Fire Tail Guppies are omnivorous surface and mid-water feeders with small mouths and fast metabolisms. Offer a varied diet to support colour, immunity, and breeding condition. A high-quality micro-pellet or crushed flake food should form the staple, ideally one that includes spirulina or other plant matter to aid digestion. Supplement daily or every other day with live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and microworms — these are especially valuable for conditioning females before breeding and for growing out fry. Bloodworm can be offered sparingly as a treat, but avoid overfeeding rich foods that can lead to constipation or fatty liver. Feed two to three small portions per day, only as much as the fish can consume within two minutes. Remove any uneaten food promptly to prevent ammonia spikes, particularly in smaller nano tanks. Because guppies are opportunistic grazers, they will also pick at biofilm and algae on plants and decor, but this should never replace a balanced diet. If you keep them alongside shrimp, ensure food reaches the bottom so the shrimp are not outcompeted.
  • Care Requirements: A minimum tank size of 10–20 litres is suitable for a small group, though 40 litres or more is recommended for a mixed community or breeding setup. The aquarium should be fully cycled before adding fish, with a mature filter and stable temperature. Use a gentle sponge filter or a baffled hang-on-back filter to avoid strong currents. Weekly water changes of 20–25% using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water will keep nitrates low and parameters stable. Test pH, KH, and GH regularly, as guppies in soft water can suffer from mineral deficiencies; if your water is very soft, consider a remineralising product designed for soft-water livebearers. Provide plenty of live or silk plants, floating vegetation, and driftwood to mimic their natural low-pH habitat. A tight-fitting lid is essential because guppies can jump. Quarantine new fish for two to four weeks before introducing them to the main tank to prevent disease outbreaks. Watch for common issues such as fin rot, ich, and velvet, which are often triggered by stress or poor water quality. Breeding is straightforward: females give birth to live fry every 25–35 days. If you wish to raise the young, separate pregnant females into a dedicated birthing tank or provide dense floating plants where fry can hide. The Snake Skin Fire Tail Guppy lives around two to three years with good care, and its striking snakeskin body pattern paired with a fiery orange-red tail makes it a standout centrepiece for any peaceful, low-pH planted aquarium.
