  • Water Conditions: The Guppy PRTDE is a freshwater tropical fish that thrives in a well-maintained aquarium with stable parameters. Ideal temperature range is 22–28°C (72–82°F), though they can tolerate brief fluctuations. pH should be kept between 6.8 and 7.8, and water hardness between 8 and 12 dGH. They prefer slightly alkaline to neutral water with moderate mineral content. Ammonia and nitrite must remain at 0 ppm, and nitrate should be kept below 20 ppm through regular water changes. A reliable filter is essential, but avoid strong currents as guppies are not powerful swimmers. Perform a 25% water change weekly using dechlorinated water. Adding 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon (optional) can boost their immune system, but it's not mandatory. Keep the tank covered as they can jump. Stable conditions prevent stress, which is key to preventing diseases like fin rot and ich. Monitor temperature carefully during winter. Also, avoid copper-based medications as they are toxic to guppies and other livebearers. Regular testing of water parameters is advised.
  • Tank Mates: Guppy PRTDE are peaceful community fish that do well with other non-aggressive species. Suitable tank mates include small tetras (neon, ember, cardinal), rasboras (harlequin, chili), corydoras catfish, otocinclus, and peaceful bottom dwellers like kuhli loaches. They also coexist with snails and larger shrimp (amano, ghost), though smaller shrimp may be eaten as fry. Avoid fin-nippers such as tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and angelfish, which can stress or injure guppies. Also avoid aggressive fish like cichlids, bettas (especially males), and larger predatory fish. Since guppies breed readily, keep either all males or a ratio of 1 male to 2-3 females to reduce harassment. Males can be kept together in single-sex tanks, but watch for bullying. A species-only tank is also fine. Ensure tank mates share similar water parameters. Good tank mates help guppies feel secure and display their best colors. Avoid overcrowding; a 10-gallon tank can house 5-6 guppies comfortably with a few other small fish. Remember that guppies are livebearers, so any tank mate that can fit fry in its mouth will eat them. If you want to raise fry, provide dense plants or a breeding box.
  • Feeding Habits: Guppy PRTDE are omnivores with small mouths and high metabolisms. They need a varied diet to maintain vibrant colors and good health. Offer high-quality flake food or micro pellets as a staple, 2-3 times daily in small portions they can consume within 2 minutes. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and cyclops. These provide essential protein and stimulate natural foraging behavior. Also include plant-based foods like spirulina flakes or blanched zucchini to aid digestion. Guppies are surface feeders but will also pick at food from the water column and substrate. Avoid overfeeding, which leads to obesity, swim bladder issues, and poor water quality. A good rule is to feed only what they finish in a couple of minutes. Remove uneaten food to prevent ammonia spikes. During breeding, increase frequency of live foods for females to support fry development. Guppies also graze on algae and microorganisms in the tank, which is a bonus. Rotate foods to prevent nutritional deficiencies. If you notice dull colors, sluggishness, or fin clamping, review diet and water quality. Healthy guppies are active, colorful, and have clear eyes and fins.
  • Care Requirements: Caring for Guppy PRTDE is straightforward, making them ideal for beginners, but they still need proper attention. Provide a tank of at least 10 gallons for a small group, with plenty of live plants (hornwort, java moss, guppy grass) to offer hiding spots and grazing surfaces. A gentle filter and heater are necessary to maintain stable temperature and water quality. Perform weekly water changes of 25% and vacuum the substrate to remove debris. Test water parameters regularly using a liquid test kit. Guppies are prolific breeders; if you don't want fry, keep only males or separate sexes. Females can store sperm for months, so even one mating can produce multiple batches. If you want to raise fry, provide a separate grow-out tank or use a breeder net. Watch for common diseases like ich, fin rot, and columnaris, often triggered by stress or poor water conditions. Quarantine new fish for 2-4 weeks before adding to the main tank. Avoid overcrowding, which leads to aggression and disease. Guppies can live 2-3 years with good care. Their hardiness and beauty make them a rewarding choice. Also, ensure the tank has a tight-fitting lid as they can jump. Acclimate new arrivals by floating the bag for 15 minutes, then drip-acclimating or adding small amounts of tank water over 30 minutes. Never release store water into your tank. With proper care, Guppy PRTDE will thrive and add constant color and activity to your aquarium.
