Maintain a temperature between 26–30°C (78–86°F) using a reliable heater with a guard, as sudden fluctuations can stress this fish and exacerbate health issues common to short-bodied strains. pH should be kept between 6.5 and 7.8, ideally slightly acidic to neutral, while general hardness (dGH) of 5–15 is suitable. A minimum tank size of 200 litres (55 gallons) is required for a single adult, though 300 litres or more is highly recommended to provide ample territory and dilution for waste. These fish are messy eaters and produce significant bioload, so use a high-capacity canister filter or sump with a turnover of at least 6–8 times the tank volume per hour. Perform 25–30% weekly water changes with dechlorinated water, and vacuum the substrate to remove debris. Monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate closely; nitrates should stay below 20 ppm. Avoid strong currents, as short-bodied flowerhorns are not the strongest swimmers—provide calm areas with gentle flow.

Supplement with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, prawns, and earthworms. Variety is key to balanced nutrition.
