Betta sp. Shioseira

Bring the quiet beauty of a Borneo forest stream to your aquarium with Betta sp. Shioseira, a tiny Betta with striking white-edged fins. At just 25–30 mm, it suits a carefully planned pair or small-group display.

Build a shaded, species-focused home with driftwood, roots and leaf litter, then add low-light plants such as Java fern, Java moss or Cryptocoryne. Floating plants can soften the light, while clay pots or piping provide extra cover.

• Distinctive fins: White margins stand out in dim lighting, making this fish a natural focal point in a blackwater-inspired display.
• Compact aquarium footprint: A 45 × 30 cm base is suitable for a pair or small group.
• Soft-water conditions: Aim for very soft water with low carbonate and general hardness, and a pH of 4.0–6.5.
• Gentle habitat: Keep the temperature at 23–28 °C and use gentle filtration, such as an air-powered sponge filter with light turnover.
• Varied feeding: Offer small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm, alongside small, palatable dried foods.
• Species-focused care: Keep with its own kind rather than in a standard community tank, and provide hiding places and a secure lid.

Feed small portions several times a day and adjust them to the fish’s activity and body condition. Leaf litter can support beneficial microbes that provide a secondary food source for fry, while lending the aquarium a natural, forest-stream feel.
