Product Description

Arnold -s- Lyretail is a peaceful African characin with striking red eyes, perfect for planted community aquariums. Shop now!

  • Water Conditions: Arnold's tetras thrive in well-maintained freshwater aquariums that mimic their natural West African habitat. They prefer a temperature range of 24–28°C (75–82°F), with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Water hardness should be soft to moderately hard, ideally 5–15 dGH. These fish are sensitive to poor water quality, so efficient filtration and regular water changes (20–30% weekly) are essential. They also appreciate moderate water flow and good oxygenation, as their natural environment includes rivers and streams with gentle currents. Avoid drastic fluctuations in parameters, as they can stress the fish and lead to health issues. A stable, mature aquarium is ideal.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Due to their peaceful and schooling nature, Arnold's tetras do best in a community tank with other calm, similarly sized fish. Ideal tank mates include other African characins (e.g., Congo tetras), smaller rainbowfish, rasboras, peaceful barbs, and bottom-dwellers like Corydoras catfish and small plecos. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, large cichlids, or predatory fish that could intimidate or eat them. Keep them in groups of at least six to eight individuals; this reduces stress and encourages natural schooling behavior. They can also be kept with dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma if the tank is spacious and well-planted.
  • Feeding Habits: Arnold's tetras are omnivorous and have a hearty appetite. In the wild, they feed on small insects, crustaceans, and plant matter. In captivity, offer a varied diet to maintain their vibrant colors and overall health. High-quality micro-pellets or flake food should form the staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. They also appreciate occasional vegetable matter, like blanched spinach or spirulina flakes. Feed small amounts two to three times daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes. Overfeeding can lead to obesity and water quality issues, so monitor intake carefully. A varied diet ensures they receive essential nutrients and helps prevent nutritional deficiencies.
  • Care Requirements: Arnold's tetras are relatively hardy but require specific care to thrive. A tank of at least 90 cm (36 inches) in length is recommended for a group, providing ample swimming space. They enjoy a well-planted aquarium with open areas for swimming, and dimmed lighting or floating plants can make them feel more secure. A dark substrate will enhance their silver coloration and red eyes. As they are known to jump, a tight-fitting lid is essential. These fish are sensitive to sudden changes, so acclimatize them slowly using the drip method. Regular monitoring of water parameters, including ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, is crucial. They are generally disease-resistant when kept in optimal conditions, but stress can make them susceptible to ich and fin rot. Quarantine new additions to prevent introducing pathogens. With proper care, Arnold's tetras can live for 5–8 years.
  • Additional Information: Arnold's tetra is endemic to the Niger Delta in Nigeria, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers and streams. They are a peaceful, schooling species that adds elegance and activity to the mid-water column. Their striking red upper eye and shimmering silver body make them a standout in any community setup. Due to their rarity in the hobby, they are prized by enthusiasts. They are not demanding but do best in a species-specific or biotope aquarium that replicates their natural environment. Always purchase from reputable sources to ensure healthy stock. Typical adult size is up to 10 cm (4 inches).
