Acanthicus adonis, the adonis pleco or polka dot lyre-tail pleco, is a large species of armored catfish. It was originally described from the lower Tocantins River in Brazil, but individuals resembling the species have also been recorded from Amazonian Peru.
Key Features:
  • Albino Coloration: The Albino Adonis Pleco showcases a striking albino coloration, which is characterized by its pale white or cream body with vibrant pink or red eyes. This unique coloration adds a captivating and ethereal quality to this fish, making it a focal point in any aquarium.

  • Distinctive Patterns: Along with its albino coloration, the Albino Adonis Pleco features intricate and bold black patterns on its body. These patterns consist of spots, stripes, or bands, depending on the individual fish. The contrast between the dark patterns and the light background further enhances its visual appeal.

  • Moderate Size: The Albino Adonis Pleco typically reaches a size of 7-8cm (2.8-3.1 inches) in length. This makes it suitable for medium-sized aquariums, and it can be comfortably housed in tanks with a capacity of at least 30 gallons. Providing ample swimming space and hiding spots will help ensure its well-being.

  • Peaceful and Shy Nature: The Albino Adonis Pleco is a peaceful and relatively shy species. It spends much of its time hiding in caves, crevices, or under driftwood, venturing out mainly during nighttime or when food is available. Creating a well-structured aquarium with plenty of hiding places will help them feel secure.

  • Omnivorous Diet: Albino Adonis Plecos are omnivorous, meaning they consume both plant matter and small invertebrates. In the aquarium, they will readily accept a variety of foods, including sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and small live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Providing a varied diet is important for their overall health.

  • Compatible Tankmates: The Albino Adonis Pleco is generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of peaceful community fish species. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish that may cause stress or harm. Suitable tankmates include peaceful tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and other peaceful pleco species.

  • Care Requirements: The Albino Adonis Pleco has moderate care requirements. It prefers well-maintained aquariums with stable water parameters. The recommended temperature range is 24-28°C (75-82°F), and the pH level should be slightly acidic to neutral. Providing good filtration, regular water changes, and maintaining proper water quality are essential for their well-being.

  • Natural Habitat: The Albino Adonis Pleco is native to the rivers and streams of the Amazon basin in South America. They inhabit areas with slow to moderate water flow and are often found in heavily vegetated regions. Replicating their natural habitat in the aquarium with driftwood, rocks, and live plants will create a suitable environment for them.
