The paradox fish (Indostomus paradoxus) is a tiny armoured fish, usually under 3 cm, from Myanmar. It earned its name because scientists struggled to place it: it looks a bit like a pipefish crossed with a stick insect, moves its fins independently and creeps around plants instead of swimming in open water.
It is a fish for nano tank enthusiasts who enjoy close observation, not for a busy community tank. FishyHub lists paradox fish from Malaysian specialist sellers when available, with prices in RM.
| Care point | Paradox fish |
|---|---|
| Adult size | About 2.5–3 cm |
| Temperature | About 22–28°C. Fine in most Malaysian homes, but keep the tank shaded so it does not run above 30°C. |
| Minimum tank | 1 kaki (30 cm, about 12–15 L) for a small group |
| Temperament | Very peaceful and shy |
| Diet | Tiny live and frozen foods: baby artemia, daphnia, microworms |
| Beginner-friendly? | No. Feeding and tankmate choice need care. |
Think small, calm and dense. A heavily planted nano tank with moss, fine-leaved plants, leaf litter and a few small caves gives them places to explore. Use a gentle sponge filter, because strong flow pushes them around. Soft, slightly acidic water suits them, and a few daun ketapang (catappa leaves) add natural tannins and leaf litter at the same time.
Paradox fish are micro-predators and usually ignore dry food. Plan a steady supply of baby artemia, daphnia, microworms or small cacing grindal (grindal worm). They eat slowly and pick food off plants and surfaces, so in a species tank they get everything they need. A well-established tank with natural micro-life helps a lot.
A species-only tank is best. If you add tankmates, choose equally tiny, calm species such as Boraras rasboras, and adult cherry shrimp. Avoid anything fast or greedy, which will take the food first.
Because they are small and slow, check that listed fish look plump rather than pinched. Ask the seller what they are feeding and how many come per order. Check whether the photo shows the actual fish, the seller's location, delivery or self-collect options and live-arrival policy. Paradox fish are a niche species, so availability and prices in RM vary.
Paradox fish makan makanan hidup yang sangat kecil, seperti anak artemia, daphnia dan cacing mikro. Ia jarang mahu makan pelet atau flake.
Ya. Akuarium 1 kaki dengan banyak pokok dan penapis span yang perlahan sudah cukup untuk sekumpulan kecil paradox fish.
Yes, adult cherry shrimp are good companions. Paradox fish may pick at very small shrimplets.
That is normal. They move slowly and often rest among plants. Check that it is eating and not losing weight.
