Cara Jaga Ikan Koi dalam Akuarium: Keeping Koi Fish Indoors in Malaysia

Yes, koi fish can live in an aquarium, but only for a while. Young koi fish of about 5–15 cm do well in a large tank (akuarium 4 kaki or bigger) with strong filtration, an air pump running 24 hours, and big weekly water changes. Koi fish grow fast, and most need a pond (kolam) once they pass about 30 cm. This guide on cara jaga ikan koi dalam akuarium explains tank sizes as they grow, the equipment that matters, daily care in Malaysian heat, and the signs it's time to move them.

Can Koi Fish Live in a Tank?

Koi fish are pond fish. Adults commonly reach 50–70 cm or more and produce a lot of waste. A tank can work as:

  • A grow-out home for young koi fish before moving them to a pond.
  • A quarantine or hospital tank for new or sick koi.
  • A display tank for a small number of juveniles, if you accept they'll need rehoming or a pond later.

Keeping a full-grown koi fish permanently in a typical home aquarium leads to stunted growth, poor water quality, stress and disease. Plan the next step from day one.

Tank Size by Koi Fish Size

Koi size Minimum tank Approx. real water volume How many
5–10 cm 3 kaki (90 × 45 × 45 cm) About 155 L 2–4 juveniles
10–20 cm 4 kaki (120 × 45 × 50 cm) About 230 L 2–3
20–30 cm 5–6 kaki (150–180 cm long) About 350–550 L 1–3
Over 30 cm Time for a kolam Pond of roughly 1,000 L or more —

Volumes are approximate; see our tank size guide for dimensions. Width matters as much as length, because koi fish need room to turn. A deep, wide tank is better than a long, narrow one.

Cara Jaga Ikan Koi dalam Akuarium: The Setup

1. Filtration: go bigger than you think

Koi fish are heavy eaters and heavy polluters. Aim for a filter that turns the tank volume over at least 5–10 times per hour, with lots of biological media.

Tank Filter options
3 kaki Large top filter, large external canister filter
4 kaki Top filter plus canister, or a sump
5–6 kaki Sump or multiple large external filters

Mechanical media (sponges, filter wool) need rinsing often, in old tank water, not tap water, to protect the bacteria.

2. Oxygen: an air pump is not optional

Warm Malaysian water holds less oxygen, and koi fish need a lot. Run a strong air pump with several airstones 24 hours a day. A battery-backup air pump protects them during power cuts. See our pam udara guide.

3. Temperature: keep it as cool as possible

Koi fish prefer water below about 28°C. In a Malaysian room at 30°C, an indoor tank will run warm.

  • Keep the tank out of direct sunlight.
  • Use an air-conditioned room if possible.
  • Add a cooling fan; consider a chiller for very warm rooms.
  • Read how to cool an aquarium in Malaysia.

4. Lid

Koi fish jump, especially after water changes or when startled. A secure lid is essential.

5. Decor and substrate

Keep it simple: a bare bottom or thin layer of smooth gravel, a few large rounded stones, and no sharp decorations. Bare bottoms are easier to clean. Koi fish dig up and eat most live plants.

Daily and Weekly Care

Task How often Notes
Feed 1–3 times a day Small amounts they finish in about 5 minutes
Check temperature and behaviour Daily Gasping or lethargy = check oxygen and water
Water change 25–40% weekly, more if heavily stocked Always treat new water with anti klorin
Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate Weekly Use a water test kit
Rinse mechanical media Weekly In old tank water
Siphon waste With each water change Koi fish produce a lot

Feeding Koi Fish in a Tank

  • Use quality koi pellets sized to the fish. Browse koi food.
  • Don't overfeed. In a tank, leftover food fouls water much faster than in a pond.
  • Treats: blanched peas, lettuce, watermelon in small amounts.
  • On hot days, feed less.

Tankmates

Koi fish do best with other koi fish. Large, peaceful goldfish can share a big tank, but together they create even more waste. Avoid small fish (koi fish eat them), tropical fish that need much warmer water than koi prefer, and fin-nippers.

Signs It's Time to Move to a Kolam

  1. Your koi fish can't turn comfortably or its body length is more than about a third of the tank's width.
  2. Ammonia or nitrate keeps rising despite frequent water changes.
  3. Fish look stressed: clamped fins, rubbing, gasping, red streaks.
  4. Growth has stopped while still young (stunting).
  5. Bullying as the fish grow.

If you can't build a pond, rehome your koi fish to someone who has one, or to a shop. Never release koi into lakes, rivers or drains. They are an introduced species, and states are tightening their own rules on releasing foreign fish, so ask DOF Malaysia before releasing any fish.

Indoor Koi Fish vs Pond Koi Fish

Aquarium Kolam
Viewing From the side, close-up From above
Space Limited; suits juveniles Room for adults
Water stability Changes quicker More stable if large
Maintenance Frequent water changes Larger filters, fewer but bigger tasks
Heat Indoors, can be shaded; aircond helps Needs shade and depth
Best for Young koi, quarantine Long-term keeping

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change water in a koi fish tank?

About 25–40% weekly, more if the tank is heavily stocked or ammonia readings rise.

Do koi fish in a tank need a heater?

Not in Malaysia. Cooling and oxygen are the concerns, not heating.

Will koi fish stay small in a small tank?

They may grow more slowly, but this is stunting, which harms their health and shortens their life. Give them the space they need.
