Feeding time is the best part of keeping koi fish: a pond surface boiling with colour as they rush for pellets. This category covers makanan ikan koi for ponds and large tanks, including floating staple pellets, wheatgerm, colour-enhancing and growth formulas, sticks and treats. The right food helps koi grow big, develop deep red (hi) and clean white skin, and stay healthy year-round.
FishyHub lists koi fish food from Malaysian sellers and pond suppliers, with prices in RM, so you can compare pellet sizes, bag weights and formulas for your kolam ikan koi.
A balanced daily food. Floating pellets let you watch the koi eat and see who is off their food, which is often the first sign of illness.
Higher in protein, used for young koi (tosai) and fish being grown on for size. Best in well-filtered ponds, because more protein means more waste.
Contains spirulina, krill or astaxanthin to deepen reds and blacks. Some keepers find heavy, long-term use can tint white areas, so many alternate colour food with a staple.
Lower in protein and easy to digest. In cooler countries it is a winter food. In Malaysia it is useful for older koi, during recovery from illness, or for lighter feeding on very hot days.
Sinking pellets suit shy koi in tanks. Silkworm pupae, prawns, watermelon and orange slices are popular occasional treats.
| Koi size | Pellet size | Feeding |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 10 cm | Small (around 2–3 mm) | 3–4 small meals a day |
| About 10–30 cm | Medium (around 4–5 mm) | 2–3 meals a day |
| Over about 30 cm | Large (around 6–7 mm or more) | 2–3 meals a day |
Many keepers mix two sizes so smaller koi in a mixed pond still get fed. Feed what is eaten in about 5 minutes and net out leftovers.
Unlike koi in Japan, Malaysian koi never go through a cold winter, so they eat and grow all year. That's great for growth, but it also means filtration has to keep up every month of the year. On very hot afternoons, warm pond water holds less oxygen, so feed in the cooler morning or evening and keep aeration running. Shade over part of the pond also helps. Store bags in a cool, dry place and reseal them well: Malaysian humidity turns opened pellets stale and mouldy, so big bags are only a saving if you finish them quickly.
Koi fish are a popular symbol of good fortune around Chinese New Year, and many new ponds are stocked then. Plan food and pond supplies ahead of the festive rush.

It can deepen colour, but genetics set the limit. Good water and sunlight matter just as much.
In a pinch, yes. Koi food is better suited to their size and growth rate, and is more economical in bigger bags.
