Makanan Ikan Buatan Sendiri: Homemade Fish Food & Safe Vegetables in Malaysia

Good makanan ikan buatan sendiri (homemade fish food) is simple: blanched vegetables such as peas, timun (cucumber), zucchini and spinach for plant-eaters and bottom feeders, and a DIY gel food made from blended seafood, vegetables and gelatine for almost everything else. Use homemade food as a supplement alongside a good commercial staple, feed small portions, and remove leftovers within a few hours. Avoid kitchen scraps like nasi, roti and anything salty, oily or spiced: they add little nutrition and foul warm Malaysian tank water fast.

Ikan Makan Sayur Apa? Safe Vegetables for Fish

Most popular aquarium fish eat at least some plant matter. Plecos (ikan bandaraya), goldfish, mollies, many livebearers and some cichlids rely on it.

Vegetable How to prepare Best for
Green peas Blanch, peel off skin, squash Goldfish, bettas (constipation), most fish
Timun (cucumber) Slice, blanch lightly, weigh down Plecos, otocinclus, snails, shrimp
Zucchini Slice, blanch, weigh down Plecos, goldfish, shrimp
Spinach / bayam Blanch, chop finely Goldfish, mollies, shrimp
Romaine lettuce Blanch Goldfish, mollies (low nutrition, occasional)
Sweet potato / keledek Boil soft, small cubes Plecos
Carrot Boil soft, slice thin Plecos, shrimp (occasional)
Pumpkin / labu Boil soft, remove seeds Plecos, shrimp

How to blanch

  1. Wash the vegetable well. Local produce can carry pesticide residue, so rinse thoroughly or peel.
  2. Drop it into boiling water for 1–2 minutes (longer for hard vegetables like carrot or sweet potato).
  3. Cool in clean water.
  4. Weigh it down with a vegetable clip, a stainless-steel fork or a clean stone so it sinks.

Remove leftovers within a few hours, or the next morning at the latest. At 28–31°C, vegetables soften and rot faster than in cooler countries.

DIY Gel Food Recipe

Gel food is the most useful homemade food: it's soft, sinks, holds together, and you control the ingredients.

Ingredients (makes a tray that lasts weeks frozen)

  • 1 cup mixed seafood: prawn (udang from the market, peeled), white fish fillet, or a little squid
  • ½ cup blanched vegetables: peas, spinach, zucchini
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder (optional)
  • A small piece of garlic (optional, some keepers use it to tempt fussy fish)
  • Unflavoured gelatine (enough to set about 1 cup of liquid; follow the pack)
  • ½ cup hot water

Method

  1. Blend the seafood and vegetables into a smooth paste with a little water.
  2. Dissolve gelatine in the hot water.
  3. Let it cool slightly (warm, not boiling, so you don't cook away nutrients) and mix in the paste.
  4. Pour into a flat container or ice tray in a thin layer.
  5. Refrigerate until set.
  6. Cut into small cubes or strips, then freeze in a sealed container.

Thaw a cube in a little tank water before feeding. Gel food keeps a few days in the fridge and a few months in the freezer. Use market seafood that's fresh enough for you to eat, and never use seasoned, fried or cooked-with-oil food.

Variations

  • Herbivore gel: mostly vegetables and spirulina, for plecos, mollies and goldfish. Spread it on a flat stone and let it set for bottom grazers.
  • Carnivore gel: mostly seafood, for bettas, cichlids and gouramis.
  • Fancy goldfish gel: higher vegetable content, less protein. See our goldfish food guide.

Makanan Ikan Selain Pelet: Other Safe Options

  • Frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp (cacing darah, artemia): good treats, already processed and cleaner than live drain worms.
  • Home cultures of moina, microworms and grindal worms. See our kutu air culture guide and grindal and microworm guide.
  • Hard-boiled egg yolk: only a tiny smear for fry, because it pollutes water very fast.
  • Algae-covered stones from a sunny outdoor tub, for plecos and shrimp.

Foods to Avoid

Avoid Why
Nasi (cooked rice), roti, biskut Swells, little nutrition, fouls water quickly
Salty, spiced or oily food (e.g. leftover lauk) Salt, oils and spices harm fish and coat the water surface
Processed meats (sausage, nugget) Fat, preservatives, salt
Raw red meat or chicken Hard to digest, high fat, contamination risk
Citrus, onion Acidic or irritating
Bread-based dough balls A fishing bait, not a fish diet
Live worms from drains or longkang Parasites and bacteria
Feeder fish of unknown origin Disease risk

Makanan Ikan Buatan Sendiri vs Commercial Food

Homemade Commercial staple
Cost Cheap once set up Varies by brand and size
Nutrition Good if varied; easy to miss vitamins Formulated to be complete
Convenience Needs prep time and freezer space Ready to use
Water quality risk Higher if overfed or left too long Lower with good-quality pellets
Best use Supplement 2–4 times a week Daily base diet

Most fish do best on a quality staple from FishyHub's tropical fish food range, with homemade food and vegetables as variety. Bottom feeders also benefit from sinking wafers listed under pleco and bottom feeder food.

Keeping Water Clean When Feeding Homemade Food

  • Feed small portions and watch for 5 minutes.
  • Siphon leftovers the same day.
  • Do regular tukar air (water changes) with water treated with anti klorin.
  • Watch for cloudy water, which usually means too much food. Our feeding frequency guide covers portions in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ikan makan sayur apa?

Is homemade fish food cheaper?

Usually, yes, especially gel food made in batches. The trade-off is preparation time and the risk of fouling water if you overfeed.

Can I feed my fish only homemade food?

It's possible with careful variety, but it's easy to miss vitamins. Use a quality commercial staple as the base and homemade food as a supplement.

How long does homemade gel food last?

A few days in the fridge and a few months in a sealed container in the freezer.
