Makanan Ikan Emas: What to Feed Goldfish (and What to Avoid) in Malaysia
The best makanan ikan emas (goldfish food) is a good-quality sinking pellet or gel food made for goldfish, topped up with blanched vegetables a few times a week and the occasional treat like cacing darah (bloodworm). Feed small portions once or twice a day, only what they finish in about two minutes. That one rule, plus picking sinking food for round-bodied fancy goldfish, prevents most of the bloating, floating and cloudy water problems Malaysian keepers run into.
This guide covers what goldfish actually eat, which food type suits oranda, ranchu and other fancy varieties, how much to feed in our warm climate, and what to keep out of the tank.
Ikan Emas Makan Apa? The Goldfish Diet in Brief
Goldfish are omnivores. In ponds they graze all day on algae, plant matter, small insects and larvae. In a tank, a balanced diet looks like this:
| Food | How often | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Goldfish sinking pellets / granules | Daily (main food) | Look for a formula made for goldfish, with plant ingredients |
| Gel food | Daily or alternate days | Soft, easy to digest, good for fancy goldfish |
| Blanched vegetables (peas, timun, spinach) | 2–3 times a week | Fibre helps digestion |
| Frozen or freeze-dried bloodworm, brine shrimp | 1–2 times a week | Treats, not a staple |
| Flakes | Occasionally | Fine for slim-bodied goldfish; fancy types gulp air with them |
Goldfish food is formulated differently from tropical fish food: it is usually lower in protein and higher in carbohydrates and plant matter. You can feed tropical food in a pinch, but don't make it the main diet.
Sinking vs Floating: The Key Choice for Fancy Goldfish
This is the part most guides skip. Slim-bodied goldfish like comets and wakin handle floating food well. Fancy goldfish (oranda, ranchu, ryukin, bubble eye) have short, round bodies with a compressed swim bladder and gut. When they snap floating pellets at the surface they also gulp air, and dry pellets swell inside the gut. Both can lead to the classic "floating upside down" or tilted swimming.
For fancy goldfish:
- Choose sinking pellets or gel food so they eat at mid-water or the bottom.
- Soak dry pellets in tank water for a minute or two before feeding so they swell outside the fish, not inside.
- Don't overfeed. Swim bladder trouble in goldfish is very often a diet issue.
If your goldfish already swims upside down after meals, see our guide to swim bladder disease (ikan berenang terbalik) and our goldfish care pillar.
Vegetables Goldfish Can Eat
Vegetables are the cheapest and healthiest supplement. Blanch them (dip in boiling water for a minute) so they soften and sink.
- Green peas: blanch, remove the skin, squash. The classic "constipation" meal.
- Timun (cucumber) or zucchini: slice thin, blanch, weigh down with a clip.
- Spinach or bayam: blanch and chop finely.
- Lettuce: soft, but low in nutrition; fine occasionally.
Wash all vegetables well to remove pesticide residue, and remove leftovers within a few hours so they don't rot. For more DIY ideas see our homemade fish food guide.
Gel Food: Why Many Fancy Goldfish Keepers Use It
Gel food is a soft, moist food you mix with hot water, let set, then cut into cubes. It has three advantages for fancy goldfish:
- It contains a lot of water, so it doesn't expand in the gut.
- It sinks and holds together, so less waste spreads through the tank.
- You can mix in vegetables or spirulina.
Commercial gel food mixes are sold, or you can make your own with gelatine and blended vegetables and seafood.
How Much and How Often? Malaysian Climate Matters
Goldfish come from cooler waters, and their metabolism speeds up as temperature rises. In Malaysia, a room-temperature tank usually sits around 27–31°C, warmer than goldfish prefer. Warm water also holds less oxygen, and the more you feed, the more oxygen the waste uses up.
Practical rules for Malaysian homes:
- Adults: 1–2 small meals a day, what they finish in about 2 minutes.
- Juveniles: 2–3 smaller meals a day.
- One fasting day a week helps clear the gut.
- Hot spells (tank above 30°C): feed a little less, add a pam udara (air pump), and consider a cooling fan. A thermometer helps you spot hot spells early.
Anak ikan emas makan apa?
Goldfish fry first eat infusoria or powdered fry food, then newly hatched baby brine shrimp after a few days, and crushed or micro pellets after a few weeks. Our cara tetas artemia guide shows how to hatch brine shrimp at home.
Foods to Avoid
| Avoid | Why |
|---|---|
| Nasi, roti, biskut | Swell in the gut, little nutrition, foul the water |
| Too much floating flake for fancy goldfish | Air gulping, buoyancy problems |
| Live worms from drains or longkang | Can carry parasites and bacteria |
| Feeder fish | Disease risk, not needed in the diet |
| Old, opened food kept for months | Vitamins break down, can grow mould in our humidity |
Storage tip: Malaysian humidity ruins opened food quickly. Buy pack sizes you'll use within a couple of months, keep the lid tight, and store away from heat and sunlight.
Signs You're Overfeeding
- Leftover food on the bottom after a few minutes
- Long trailing poop strands
- Cloudy or smelly water between water changes
- Fish floating, tilting or struggling to stay down after meals
- Rising ammonia or nitrite on a test kit
Overfeeding is one of the main reasons aquarium fish die. Cut back and do a partial tukar air (water change) with water treated with anti klorin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ikan emas makan apa?
Is floating food bad for goldfish?
Not for slim-bodied goldfish. For fancy goldfish like oranda and ranchu, floating food makes them gulp air, which can contribute to swim bladder problems, so sinking food is the safer choice.
Can goldfish eat tropical fish food?
Occasionally, yes. But goldfish food is formulated with less protein and more plant matter, so use it as the main diet.
How long can goldfish go without food?
Healthy adult goldfish can usually manage a few days without food, which is why a fasting day is safe. For longer trips, plan ahead with a feeder or a trusted helper rather than dumping extra food in before you leave.
