Ikan Makan Berapa Kali Sehari? How Often to Feed Fish & Avoid Overfeeding

So, ikan makan berapa kali sehari? For most adult aquarium fish, once or twice a day is enough, giving only what they finish in about 2 minutes. Fry and juveniles need smaller meals 3–5 times a day, while big predatory fish like adult arowana often do well on one meal a day or even every other day. Add one fasting day a week for most adults. In Malaysia's warm water (usually 27–31°C) fish digest faster and look hungrier, but warm water also holds less oxygen and spoils faster, so overfeeding is the bigger risk.

Ikan Makan Berapa Kali Sehari? Quick Guide by Fish Type

Fish Adult feeding Juvenile / fry Notes
Betta (ikan laga) 1–2 small meals; 2–4 pellets per meal 3–4 tiny feeds Prone to bloating; one fast day a week
Guppy, molly, platy 1–2 meals 3–5 tiny feeds Grazers; small and often is fine
Tetras, rasboras 1–2 meals 3–4 feeds Use small flakes or micro pellets
Goldfish 1–2 meals 2–3 feeds Prefer sinking food for fancy types
Koi fish (pond) 1–3 meals depending on temperature and size 3–4 feeds Feed less in very hot or stormy weather
Corydoras, plecos Once daily, sinking food, often at lights-out 2–3 feeds Make sure food reaches the bottom
Angelfish, gourami 1–2 meals 3 feeds
Arowana, large cichlids Once a day or every other day 2 feeds Large meals; remove leftovers promptly
Shrimp Small amount once a day or every other day — They graze biofilm; overfeeding fouls tanks fast

These are starting points. Adjust by watching your fish and your water.

How Much Per Meal? The Portion Rule

Forget measuring by spoons. Use these two checks instead:

  1. The 2-minute rule. Feed what your fish eat completely in about 2 minutes. If food is still drifting or sitting on the bottom after that, you fed too much.
  2. The eye-size guide. A fish's stomach is roughly the size of its eye. For a betta that means just a few small pellets.

Start small. You can always add a pinch more; you can't take uneaten food back out of the water column once it's broken up.

Berapa banyak bagi ikan makan in a community tank?

Feed in two small rounds a few seconds apart: the first round for the fast surface feeders, the second sinking food for the slower and bottom fish. This stops greedy fish eating everything while shy ones starve.

Why Malaysian Heat Changes Feeding

Fish are cold-blooded, so their metabolism rises with water temperature. In a Malaysian living room the tank usually sits around 27–31°C, warmer than many temperate guides assume. That means:

  • Fish look hungrier, so keepers tend to overfeed.
  • Food rots faster, turning into ammonia sooner.
  • Warm water holds less oxygen, and decomposing food uses up more.

During heatwaves when the tank goes above 30–31°C, feed a little less and add aeration with a pam udara (air pump). Our guides on ideal aquarium temperature and aquarium cooling cover this in more detail.

Fasting Days: Good for Most Adults

A weekly fasting day gives the gut time to clear and helps prevent bloating and constipation, especially in bettas and fancy goldfish. Healthy adult fish can go several days without food. Fry should not be fasted.

Signs of Overfeeding

What you see What it means
Leftover food on the substrate Too much per meal
Cloudy or smelly water Bacterial bloom from rotting food
Long, stringy poop Too much food or poor digestion
Bloated belly, fish floating or tilting Constipation or swim bladder strain
Algae suddenly growing fast Excess nutrients from food waste
Oily film on the surface Fats from excess food
Fish gasping at the surface Low oxygen, often from rotting food in warm water
Ammonia or nitrite showing on a test kit Biofilter overloaded

Overfeeding is one of the most common reasons fish die. See our kenapa ikan mati guide and cloudy water fixes if your tank is already showing these signs.

What to do if you've overfed

  1. Siphon out uneaten food.
  2. Do a 25–30% tukar air (water change) with water treated with anti klorin.
  3. Skip feeding for a day.
  4. Test ammonia and nitrite.
  5. Increase aeration if fish are at the surface.

Signs of Underfeeding

Less common, but it happens, especially with shy fish in busy tanks:

  • Sunken belly or visible spine
  • Fish constantly picking at the substrate or plants
  • Fin nipping and aggression at feeding time
  • Fry growing very unevenly

Feeding Tools That Help

  • Feeding rings keep floating food in one spot so it doesn't get sucked into the filter.
  • Feeding tongs and pipettes let you target food to bottom fish or a single betta.
  • Automatic feeders keep portions consistent, which helps when you're working long hours or travelling.
  • Holiday food blocks release food slowly; test them before a trip.

You'll find these on FishyHub's feeding accessories page, with holiday foods and staple tropical fish food listed separately. Prices are set by each seller in RM.

A Simple Weekly Feeding Plan (Community Tank)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it OK to feed fish only once a day?

Yes. For most adult fish, one good meal a day is perfectly healthy, especially in warm water.

Can I skip feeding my fish for a day?

Yes. A weekly fasting day is good for most healthy adults. Don't fast fry.

Why do my fish always act hungry?

Fish are opportunistic feeders and will beg whenever they see you. Begging isn't a sign of hunger. Judge by body shape and leftover food, not behaviour.
