Penyakit Insang Ikan: Gill Flukes, Red Gills & Treatment
Penyakit insang ikan (gill disease) usually shows up as fish breathing fast, gasping at the surface, rubbing against rocks and having red, swollen or pale gills. The two most common causes in home tanks and koi ponds are gill flukes (tiny parasitic worms) and ammonia burn from poor water. They look similar but need different fixes: flukes need an antiparasitic ubat ikan, while ammonia burn needs clean water first. This guide helps you tell them apart and treat each safely.
Signs of Penyakit Insang Ikan
- Fast breathing, gills moving hard
- Gasping at the surface, or hanging near the filter outflow or air stone
- Flashing: darting and rubbing the body or head against decor, substrate or the pond wall
- Gill covers held open or flared on one side
- Red, swollen, pale or mucus-covered gills (insang ikan merah or bengkak)
- Clamped fins, not eating, hiding
- Koi jumping or scraping along the pond bottom more than usual
Gill Flukes vs Ammonia Burn
| Gill flukes | Ammonia / nitrite burn | |
|---|---|---|
| Cause | Parasitic flatworms, often Dactylogyrus (gill) and Gyrodactylus (skin and gills) | High ammonia or nitrite from new tank, overfeeding, dead fish, overstocking, filter failure |
| Water test | Often normal | Ammonia and/or nitrite above zero |
| Flashing | Very common | Less common |
| Fish affected | Can be one or several; new fish often bring them | Usually many fish at once |
| Onset | Gradual, after adding new fish or plants | Often sudden, after a filter clean, power cut or overfeeding |
| Fix | Antiparasitic medicine | Water changes, fix filtration |
Test the water first with a water test kit. If ammonia or nitrite is up, deal with that before blaming parasites. If water is clean but fish keep flashing and gasping, flukes are likely.
Other causes to rule out
- Low oxygen: common in warm Malaysian water (28–31°C), heavily stocked ponds and after a power cut stops the pump. Add an air pump and see if breathing improves.
- White spot or velvet on the gills: look for dots or gold dust on the body. See white spot.
- Chlorine from untreated tap water: always use anti klorin.
- Bacterial gill disease: often follows poor water; gills look eroded or covered in mucus.
What Are Gill Flukes?
Flukes are tiny flatworms, too small to see properly without a microscope. They hook onto gills and skin and feed on mucus and tissue, which causes irritation, extra mucus and damage that lets bacteria in.
- Dactylogyrus mainly lives on gills and lays eggs, which can survive and hatch later.
- Gyrodactylus gives birth to live young and can multiply quickly on skin and gills.
Both are common in goldfish, koi and many tropical fish, and they often arrive with new fish from farms, shops or friends' tanks.
Treatment for Gill Flukes
1. Improve oxygen first
Gill damage makes breathing hard. Add an air pump and air stone, increase surface movement, and keep the water cool enough. Many treatments also lower oxygen.
2. Choose an antiparasitic that targets flukes
Look in fish medication for products labelled for flukes or worms. Praziquantel is a common active ingredient for flukes and is generally considered gentle on fish and filter bacteria. Some formalin-based products also target flukes but are harsher and lower oxygen.
3. Dose for the real volume
- Tank: use actual water volume, not the glass size. Our tank size guide helps.
- Pond: measure length × width × average depth in metres × 1,000 = litres. Most ponds hold less water than owners think, which leads to overdosing, or more, which leads to underdosing.
4. Repeat as directed
Because Dactylogyrus eggs can hatch after the first dose, many labels call for a second treatment after several days. Follow the product instructions.
5. Salt as support
For salt-tolerant fish (goldfish, koi), a low level of aquarium salt can reduce stress and mucus during recovery. Check the medicine label first. See garam ikan untuk apa.
Pond vs Tank Dosing
| Aquarium | Koi pond | |
|---|---|---|
| Volume accuracy | Easy to calculate | Often guessed; measure carefully |
| Option to isolate | Easy: hospital tank | Harder; catch sick koi into a treatment tub |
| Plants | Medicine and salt may harm them | Lilies and pond plants may be affected |
| Weather | Indoor, stable | Rain can dilute dosing; sun and heat lower oxygen |
| Filter | Remove carbon | Keep biofilter running; check whether the product is biofilter-safe |
Heavy afternoon storms are common in Malaysia. If heavy rain is coming, consider delaying pond treatment or covering the pond, because rain dilutes medicine and can shift pH. Read air hujan untuk kolam ikan.
Ammonia Burn: What to Do
- Do a 30–50% water change with dechlorinated water at the same temperature.
- Stop feeding for a day or two.
- Remove dead fish or rotting food.
- Check the filter: has it stopped, been washed in tap water or been replaced?
- Test daily and repeat smaller changes until ammonia and nitrite read zero.
- A bacteria starter can help a damaged filter recover.
Damaged gills heal over time once the water is clean.
Prevention
- Quarantine new fish and koi for 2–4 weeks, and consider a preventive fluke treatment during quarantine if an experienced keeper recommends it.
- Don't overstock ponds and tanks.
- Keep filters healthy: rinse media in old tank water, not tap water.
- Aerate well, especially in hot weather and during power cuts.
- Use anti klorin every water change.
FAQ
Kenapa insang ikan merah dan ikan bernafas laju?
Biasanya sebab kualiti air teruk (ammonia atau nitrit tinggi), kekurangan oksigen atau parasit insang (gill flukes). Uji air dahulu. Jika air bersih tetapi ikan masih menggesel badan dan bernafas laju, kemungkinan besar ia parasit.
Ikan koi sakit insang, nak buat apa?
Can I see gill flukes with my eyes?
Usually not. They're tiny. Keepers diagnose them from symptoms (flashing, fast breathing) with normal water tests, or through a microscope check by an experienced keeper or vet.
Is praziquantel safe for shrimp and plants?
It's generally considered gentler than many antiparasitics, but always check the specific product label and remove sensitive animals if unsure.
How long do gills take to heal?
Once the cause is fixed, breathing often improves within days, but gill tissue can take a few weeks to fully recover.
