Cara Hilangkan Siput dalam Akuarium: Controlling Pest Snails in Malaysia
The fastest cara hilangkan siput dalam akuarium is not a chemical. It's cutting the food supply: pest snails only explode when there is extra food in the tank. Feed less, remove snails by hand and with traps for two to three weeks, then add a natural predator such as assassin snails if numbers stay high. Chemical snail removers work, but they kill shrimp and wanted snails too and can cause an ammonia spike, so treat them as a last resort.
Know Your Snails First
Not every siput kecil dalam akuarium is a pest. Some are useful clean-up crew.
| Snail | Looks like | Breeds in freshwater? | Pest? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bladder / pond snail | Small, thin brown shell, coils to the left | Yes, fast | Yes, in large numbers |
| Ramshorn | Flat, coiled like a ram's horn, red or brown | Yes, fast | Sometimes |
| Malaysian trumpet snail (MTS) | Tall, cone-shaped, lives in the sand | Yes, livebearer | Mild; aerates substrate |
| Nerite | Round, striped or spotted, larger | No (eggs need brackish water) | No, but leaves white eggs |
| Mystery snail | Large, round, golden/blue | Yes, lays eggs above water | No, if controlled |
| Assassin snail | Yellow-and-brown striped cone | Slowly | No; eats other snails |
A note on siput gondang emas (golden apple snail, Pomacea): it looks like a mystery snail but is a serious rice-field pest in Malaysia. Never release any snail into drains, ponds or paddy fields. Our guide to golden apple snail vs mystery snail explains how to tell them apart.
Why Pest Snails Suddenly Explode
A snail infestation aquarium owners complain about usually starts with one or two hitchhikers on a new plant or in a bag of fish. Pest snails are hermaphrodites, so one snail can start a colony. Numbers then track the food supply:
- Overfeeding: leftover pellets and flakes are snail food
- Dead or melting plants: rotting leaves feed them
- Heavy algae and detritus: dirty substrate is a buffet
- Warm water: Malaysian tanks at 27–30°C speed up breeding
In other words, an explosion of snails is a symptom. Fix the food problem and the population shrinks on its own.
Cara Hilangkan Siput dalam Akuarium: Step by Step
Step 1: Cut feeding
Feed only what your fish finish in about two minutes, once a day. Skip one day a week. Remove uneaten food with a net or siphon.
Step 2: Clean up the tank
- Siphon the substrate during water changes
- Trim and remove dying leaves
- Rinse filter sponges in old tank water (not tap water) to keep the good bacteria
The guide to aquarium water changes shows a simple routine.
Step 3: Remove by hand and with traps
- Drop a blanched vegetable slice (cucumber, zucchini, lettuce) in at night. Lift it out in the morning, covered in snails.
- Use a plastic snail trap or a jar with a small hole and a pellet inside.
- Squash egg clutches on the glass with a scraper.
Repeat nightly for two weeks and you'll pull out hundreds.
Step 4: Add a natural predator
Assassin snails (Anentome helena) hunt and eat other snails. They breed slowly, so they don't become a new pest. Add 3–5 for a 2 kaki tank. They are shrimp-safe for adult shrimp, though they may eat newly hatched babies occasionally.
Loaches also eat snails. Clown loaches (ikan botia) are famous snail eaters but grow to 20–30 cm and need a large tank. Yoyo loaches and zebra loaches are smaller options. Find them under loaches. Loaches will also eat shrimp and any snails you wanted to keep.
Pea puffers eat snails too, but they can be nippy with tankmates.
Step 5: Chemical snail removers (last resort)
Products sold as snail killers usually contain copper or other molluscicides. They are found under pest removers. Before using one:
- Remove shrimp, nerites and any snails you want to keep. Copper kills them.
- Expect many dead snails at once. Their bodies rot and spike ammonia, so remove what you can and do extra water changes.
- Run activated carbon afterwards to remove residue.
- Don't use on planted tanks with sensitive plants without reading the label.
Because of these risks, most keepers try steps 1–4 first.
Shrimp Safety: Snail Control in a Shrimp Tank
In a shrimp tank, you have fewer options. Chemicals and loaches are out. Stick to:
- Lighter feeding
- Vegetable traps every night
- Hand removal of eggs
- A few assassin snails (accept some risk to baby shrimp)
Most shrimp keepers simply tolerate ramshorn and trumpet snails, which eat leftover food and don't harm shrimp. The shrimp tank setup guide covers safe tankmates.
Prevention: Stop Snails Coming In
- Inspect and rinse new plants. Snail eggs are clear jelly blobs on leaves.
- Dip plants in a mild alum or diluted bleach solution, then rinse very thoroughly in conditioned water. Some keepers prefer tissue-culture plants, which are snail-free.
- Don't add shop water to your tank when buying fish.
- Quarantine new plants in a bucket for a week.
Are Snails Ever Good?
Yes. Many keepers deliberately add snails because they eat algae, leftover food and dead plant matter, and trumpet snails stir the substrate. If you want a controlled snail population, browse aquarium snails such as nerites, which can't breed in freshwater. Our aquarium snails guide compares the common types.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do assassin snails eat shrimp?
They rarely catch healthy adult shrimp. They may take very small babies or weak shrimp, so add only a few to a breeding tank.
Will snail killer harm my fish?
Most fish tolerate snail removers at the label dose, but scaleless fish, shrimp and other invertebrates are at risk. Always remove shrimp first and follow the dose exactly.
How long does it take to get rid of pest snails?
With lighter feeding and nightly trapping, numbers usually fall noticeably within 2–4 weeks. Assassin snails take longer but keep the population low for good.
