Siput Akuarium: Nerite, Mystery & Ramshorn Snail Guide for Malaysia

A siput akuarium (aquarium snail) is a useful clean-up crew member that eats algae, leftover food and dying plant matter. The most popular types in Malaysia are nerite snails (best algae eaters, don't multiply in freshwater), mystery snails (big and colourful, breed only in pairs), ramshorn and Malaysian trumpet snails (breed fast and easily), rabbit snails (slow, warm-water lovers) and assassin snails (eat other snails). In much of Malaysia, tap water is soft with low KH, so the most common snail problem is shell erosion, fixed by adding calcium. This guide compares the types and how to keep them healthy.

Jenis Siput Akuarium: Quick Comparison

Snail Size Algae eating Breeds in freshwater tanks? Eggs Plant safe? Notes
Nerite (zebra, horned, tiger, olive) 1–3 cm Excellent No (larvae need brackish water) Small white dots on hardscape and glass Yes Best "siput pembersih aquarium"
Mystery snail (Pomacea diffusa) 4–5 cm Good Yes, needs male + female Pale cream clutch above the waterline Mostly Many colours; needs a lid
Ramshorn (red, blue, pink) 1–2 cm Good Yes, fast Clear jelly blobs on glass and leaves Yes, mostly Numbers boom with overfeeding
Malaysian trumpet snail (MTS) 1–2.5 cm Fair Yes, fast; gives birth to live young None visible Yes Burrows, aerates substrate
Bladder / pond snail Under 1 cm Fair Yes, very fast Clear jelly clutches Yes Usually a hitchhiker on plants
Rabbit snail (Tylomelania) 5–10 cm Fair Yes, slowly; one baby at a time Single eggs Can nibble soft plants Likes warm water, suits Malaysian temps
Assassin snail (Anentome helena) 2–3 cm No Yes, slowly Single eggs on hard surfaces Yes Eats other snails; natural pest control

Avoid wild-collected snails and any snail laying bright pink egg clutches: those are golden apple snails, a serious padi pest. See siput gondang emas vs mystery snail.

Nerite Snails: The Best Siput Pembersih Aquarium

Nerite snails are the top choice if you want algae cleared without a snail population explosion.

  • Eat green spot algae, diatoms and film algae off glass, rocks and leaves.
  • Don't breed in freshwater. Females still lay small, hard white eggs on wood, rock and glass. These won't hatch, but they can look untidy and are hard to scrape off.
  • May climb out. Keep the water line a little below the rim, or use a lid.
  • Flip-overs: a nerite stuck upside down may not be able to right itself. Turn it over gently.

Mystery Snails: Big Personality

Mystery snails are popular in Malaysian community tanks for their colours (gold, ivory, blue, purple, magenta, jade) and their long breathing siphon.

  • Need both sexes to breed, and lay a cream clutch above the water. Remove it if you don't want babies.
  • Need a lid, because females climb out to lay eggs.
  • Eat leftovers, algae and soft dying leaves, and usually leave healthy plants alone.
  • Shorter life in very warm water. Malaysian room temperature is fine, but avoid tanks that overheat.

Ramshorn and Trumpet Snails: Helpful, but They Multiply

These are the snails that "appear from nowhere", usually arriving on plants. They aren't harmful:

  • Ramshorn eat algae, leftovers and dead leaves.
  • Malaysian trumpet snails burrow through the substrate, stirring it and preventing gas pockets. They come out at night.

Their numbers depend almost entirely on food. A sudden snail boom is a sign of overfeeding. Cut back on food, remove some snails by hand or with a lettuce leaf trap, or add assassin snails. See how to get rid of snails in an aquarium.

Rabbit Snails: Great for Warm Tanks

Rabbit snails from Sulawesi prefer warm water, often kept around 27–30°C, which suits Malaysian homes without a chiller. They are slow, gentle and grow large, with long "rabbit ear" tentacles. They give birth to one baby at a time, so they never overrun a tank. They can nibble soft plants, so pair them with tougher plants like Anubias and java fern.

Assassin Snails: Living Pest Control

Assassin snails hunt and eat other snails, including ramshorn, bladder and trumpet snails. They breed slowly, so they don't become pests themselves. Don't keep them with snails you want to keep, such as nerites or small mystery snails, although large adults are usually left alone.

Shell Erosion in Soft Malaysian Water

Snails build their shells from calcium. In soft, low-KH or acidic water, shells can thin, crack and erode, especially around the tip.

Signs:

  • White, pitted or flaking shells
  • Holes near the tip of the shell
  • Cracks or rough growth lines

Fixes:

Fix How
Cuttlebone Boil briefly, sink it in the tank or filter; it dissolves slowly
Crushed coral or aragonite A small bag in the filter raises KH, GH and calcium
Mineral supplement Shrimp or snail mineral products, dosed per label
Calcium-rich foods Snail foods with calcium, blanched spinach
Avoid strong acids Lots of driftwood, ketapang and active soil lower pH; balance with minerals if keeping snails

Test GH and KH with a water test kit before and after, and raise hardness slowly. Read more about local water in our tap water guide.

Snail Care Basics

  • Acclimatise slowly: float the bag, then add tank water bit by bit.
  • Always use anti klorin when changing water.
  • Avoid copper medicines: many fish medicines contain copper, which kills snails and shrimp. Check labels, or move snails out before treating.
  • Feed if algae runs out: sinking pellets, algae wafers or blanched vegetables.
  • Check for dead snails: a dead snail smells strongly and fouls water fast. If a snail hasn't moved for a day, smell-test it.

Tankmates to Avoid

Pufferfish (including pea puffers), clown loaches and other loaches, large cichlids, goldfish (may suck small snails out of their shells) and some bettas that nip mystery snail antennae.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my snail's shell turning white?

It is usually shell erosion from soft or acidic water. Add a calcium source such as cuttlebone or crushed coral and check GH and KH.

Do snails need to be fed?

In a tank with algae and leftovers, often not. If the tank is very clean, offer algae wafers or blanched vegetables a few times a week.

Can snails live with shrimp?

Yes. Most snails are excellent tankmates for shrimp, and both enjoy the same foods. Just avoid copper medicines in either case.
