Cacing Darah Beku: How to Feed Frozen Bloodworms Safely

To feed cacing darah beku (frozen bloodworm) safely, thaw a cube in a small cup of tank water, pour off the melt water, and feed only as much as your fish finish in about one to two minutes, two or three times a week as a treat rather than every meal. Bloodworms are one of the best foods for conditioning bettas, gouramis, tetras and other carnivorous fish, and almost every fish goes mad for them. But they are rich, they foul water quickly if left over, and too many can cause bloating and constipation. This guide covers how to choose, thaw, portion and store them, including what to do when the electricity goes off.

What Are Cacing Darah (Bloodworms)?

Despite the name, bloodworms aren't worms. They are the larvae of non-biting midges (chironomids), small flies that breed in still or slow water. They are red because they contain haemoglobin, which helps them survive in low-oxygen mud. For fish, they are a natural, protein-rich food.

Frozen vs Freeze-Dried vs Live

Frozen (cacing darah beku) Freeze-dried Live
Nutrition Very good, close to live Good, some loss Best
Convenience Needs freezer, thawing Shelf-stable, easiest Needs to be used fast
Disease/parasite risk Low (some brands are gamma-irradiated; check the label) Low Higher, depending on source
Water fouling Moderate if you drain melt water Low, but swells Low if eaten quickly
Bloat risk Moderate Higher if fed dry Lower
Best for Regular treats, conditioning breeders Travel, backup, picky eaters Breeders, wild-type or fussy fish

A note on freeze-dried bloodworms

Freeze-dried worms absorb water and swell. Fed dry, they can swell in the stomach, which is a common cause of bloat in bettas. Soak them in a little tank water for a few minutes before feeding.

A note on live bloodworms

Live worms are great, but they come from muddy water and can carry bacteria or parasites. Buy from a trusted source, rinse well, and feed in small amounts.

How to Thaw and Feed Cacing Darah Beku

  1. Pop one cube (or break off a piece) from the blister pack. Use a clean spoon or wash your hands. Some people are allergic to bloodworms and get skin rashes or sneezing, so consider gloves if you handle them often.
  2. Thaw it in a small cup with a little tank water for 5–10 minutes. Don't use hot water or the microwave.
  3. Strain or pour off the melt water. That reddish liquid carries extra nutrients that cloud water and feed algae. A small brine shrimp net works well as a strainer.
  4. Feed with a pipette or spoon. Target-feed shy fish and bottom dwellers.
  5. Watch for 1–2 minutes. Remove leftovers with a pipette or net.

Don't drop a frozen cube straight into the tank. Fish may swallow hard, cold pieces, and uneaten bits sink into the gravel and rot.

Portion Sizes: How Much Is Enough?

Fish stomachs are roughly the size of their eye. That helps as a guide.

Fish Portion per feed How often
Betta (ikan laga) 2–4 worms 1–3 times a week
Guppies, tetras, rasboras (school of 10) Small piece of a cube 2–3 times a week
Gouramis, angelfish Half a cube for a few fish 2–3 times a week
Corydoras, loaches Target-fed at the bottom, small piece 2–3 times a week
Goldfish Small amount, as a treat only 1–2 times a week
Larger fish (e.g. arowana juveniles, oscars) Whole cubes, more depending on size As part of a varied diet

Make bloodworms part of a varied diet with a good pellet or flake as the base. See our betta care guide for a betta feeding routine, and read how often to feed fish.

Risks of Overfeeding Bloodworms

  • Bloat and constipation: a swollen belly and stringy poop. Bettas and goldfish are prone. Fast the fish for 1–2 days and feed less afterwards.
  • Dirty water: leftover worms rot quickly in warm Malaysian tanks (28–31°C), raising ammonia. Cloudy or smelly water often follows. See air akuarium keruh.
  • Picky eaters: fish fed only bloodworms may refuse pellets.
  • Unbalanced diet: bloodworms alone don't cover everything fish need.

If a fish's belly looks swollen with raised scales (like a pinecone), that's not just bloat. It may be dropsy. See penyakit sisik nanas.

Storing Frozen Bloodworms in Malaysia

In the freezer

  • Keep packs in the freezer, not the fridge. A fridge only keeps them a day or two once thawed.
  • Put the pack in a zip bag or sealed box to keep it separate from family food and avoid freezer burn.
  • Use within the time on the pack.

During a power cut

  • Keep the freezer door closed. A full freezer stays frozen for many hours if unopened.
  • After power returns, check the cubes. If they are still frozen hard, they're fine. If they thawed completely and went soft, throw them away. Refreezing thawed bloodworms lets bacteria multiply.
  • If cubes partly thawed and stuck together, it's safer to discard the pack.
  • Keep a pack of freeze-dried bloodworms as a backup for outages and holidays.

When buying online

Frozen food melts fast in Malaysian heat. Ask the seller how they pack it (cooler box, ice packs) and the delivery method. Open the parcel straight away. If it arrives soft and warm, contact the seller and don't feed it. For more on ordering, see buying live fish and supplies online.

Which Fish Shouldn't Eat Much Bloodworm?

  • Herbivores like many plecos and some African cichlids do better on vegetable-based foods.
  • Goldfish can have bloodworms, but as a small treat only.
  • Fry need smaller foods: crushed bloodworm can work for larger fry, but baby brine shrimp suit them better.

FAQ

Cacing darah beku perlu cairkan dulu ke?

Perlu.

Can bloodworms be a fish's only food?

Not ideally. Use them as a treat or conditioning food alongside a quality pellet or flake.

Why does my fish look bloated after bloodworms?

Probably overfeeding or dry freeze-dried worms swelling inside. Fast for a day or two and feed smaller, soaked portions.

Can I refreeze bloodworms that thawed during a blackout?

It's not recommended. Thawed and refrozen bloodworms can carry high bacteria levels. Throw them out and use a backup food.
