Ikan Pari Air Tawar: Freshwater Stingray Care & Legal Checks in Malaysia

Ikan pari air tawar (freshwater stingrays) are among the most rewarding "monster" fish you can keep, but they are not a beginner fish. In short: a single adult needs a tank with a big floor area (at least 6 kaki long and 2–3 kaki wide), fine sand, very clean water with strong filtration and large weekly water changes, a meaty diet, and careful handling because the tail barb is venomous. Buy only from sellers who follow Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia rules, and check before you buy.

This guide covers the aquarium stingrays sold in Malaysian shops, mostly South American Potamotrygon species and their hybrids, not the wild river rays of our own rivers.

Which Freshwater Stingrays Are in the Hobby?

Most stingrays sold as ikan hiasan belong to the South American family Potamotrygonidae. Common types you'll see on listings:

  • Motoro: the classic orange-ringed ray, hardy by stingray standards, and large as an adult.
  • Leopoldi (black diamond / polka dot): black body with white spots, slower growing and usually pricier.
  • Hybrids: crosses with names like "pearl", "black diamond hybrid" or "Mosaic". Many are captive-bred in Asia.

Prices in RM vary widely with pattern, size, line and whether the ray is a proven breeder. Pattern quality on the disc is the biggest price driver.

What about native Malaysian rays?

Malaysia's rivers have their own freshwater and estuarine whiprays, including very large species. These are wild animals, some of them threatened, and they are not suitable aquarium fish. In November 2025 The Star reported that DOF was strengthening monitoring and enforcement after findings on the online shark and ray trade. Stick to captive-bred aquarium rays from compliant sellers.

Is It Legal to Keep a Stingray in Malaysia?

We could not find aquarium Potamotrygon rays named on the DOF list of prohibited fish we checked (MyBIS). However, Malaysia's prohibited-fish rules were amended in 2024, enforcement has increased, and some ray species are protected under separate rules. The safe approach:

  1. Buy only from sellers who comply with DOF Malaysia rules and can tell you the species and origin.
  2. Ask the seller for any import or trading documents they hold.
  3. If in doubt, ask your nearest DOF Fisheries Office before buying, because lists can change.

Ikan Pari Air Tawar Care Table

Factor What a stingray needs
Temperature 26–30°C; normal Malaysian room temperature is fine, but avoid spikes above 31°C
Minimum tank (juvenile) 4 kaki (120 × 45 cm floor), about 230 L, as a temporary grow-out
Adult tank 6 kaki × 2–3 kaki wide (180 × 60–90 cm floor), 550 L and up
Substrate Fine, smooth sand or bare bottom
Water Low nitrate, stable pH, no ammonia or nitrite at all
Diet Carnivore: prawn, mussel, fish fillet, earthworm, frozen bloodworm for juveniles, quality sinking pellets
Temperament Peaceful, but will eat small fish that sit on the bottom
Beginner-friendly? No; for keepers who already run large tanks well

The Tank: Footprint Beats Height

Stingrays live on the floor, so the length and especially the width of the tank matter far more than height. A deep 4 kaki tank gives a ray less space than a shallow 6 × 3 kaki tank. Many Malaysian keepers use custom low tanks, or a pond-style tub indoors, for adults.

  • Width: at least twice the adult disc width, so the ray can turn without curling its disc against the glass.
  • Sand: use fine, rounded sand. Rays bury themselves and sift for food, and sharp gravel scratches the underside. See our aquarium sand and gravel options, and read the guide to aquarium tank sizes in kaki and litres before you order glass.
  • Décor: keep the floor open. Avoid sharp rocks and heaters lying on the bottom (rays can burn themselves on an exposed heater).
  • Lid: rays sometimes "surf" up the glass, so keep a cover.
  • Weight: a full 6 kaki tank weighs well over half a tonne. Check your floor, especially in condos.

Water Quality: The Make-or-Break Factor

Most stingray losses come from water, not disease. Rays absorb waste through their skin and react quickly to poor conditions.

  • Filtration: oversize it. Sumps, large top filters or several canisters are common on stingray tanks.
  • Water changes: many keepers change 30–50% weekly, with water at the same temperature. Always use anti klorin, because Malaysian tap water is chlorinated. Our tap water and anti klorin guide explains why.
  • Testing: test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH every week. Keep nitrate low.
  • Stable pH: much of Malaysian tap water is soft with little buffering, so pH can drift. Change water regularly rather than chasing numbers with chemicals.
  • Power cuts: a large tank loses oxygen slowly, but add a battery air pump for long outages.

Warning signs

Sign Likely cause
Disc edges curling up ("disc curl") Poor water quality, stress
Not eating for days New fish stress, water problem, illness
Heavy, fast breathing Low oxygen, ammonia, too warm
Cloudy eyes or red patches underneath Water quality or infection

If you see disc curl, test the water and do a water change before anything else.

Feeding a Freshwater Stingray

Rays eat from the bottom, with the mouth on the underside of the disc.

  • Juveniles: feed two or three times a day. Frozen foods such as bloodworm (cacing darah), plus small pieces of prawn.
  • Adults: once or twice a day with prawn, mussel, white fish fillet, earthworm and good sinking pellets.
  • Variety matters. A mix of foods gives a better-balanced diet than one item.
  • Avoid live feeder fish, which can carry disease and parasites.
  • A well-fed ray has a slightly rounded back. A sunken back or visible "hips" means it is underfed.

Remove leftover food quickly, because uneaten prawn fouls the water fast.

Safety: The Barb Is Real

Every freshwater stingray has one or more venomous barbs on the tail. Rays don't attack people, but they will strike if pinned, netted roughly or stepped on.

  • Wear thick gloves when working in the tank, and move slowly.
  • Use a large container rather than a net to move a ray. Nets tangle the barb.
  • Keep children's hands out of the tank.
  • Rays shed and regrow barbs. A shed barb on the sand is still sharp, so pick it up with tongs.
  • If you are stung, it is very painful. Seek medical treatment promptly and tell the doctor it was a freshwater stingray.

Tank Mates

Choose fish that stay off the bottom and won't nip:

  • Arowana are the classic stingray partner because they use the top layer. Buy only CITES-certified, microchipped arowana and keep the certificate. See our arowana price and CITES guide.
  • Large, peaceful mid-water fish such as bigger barbs or gouramis.
  • Avoid plecos (ikan bandaraya) and other suckermouth fish, which may latch onto a ray's disc.
  • Avoid anything small enough to be eaten from the bottom.

Buying a Stingray on FishyHub

Browse freshwater stingrays from Malaysian sellers and check each listing for:

  • Species or line name, size (disc width) and whether the photo is the actual ray.
  • Feeding: ask what it is eating now, and ask for a feeding video if possible.
  • Seller compliance: whether the seller follows DOF rules and can tell you the ray's origin.
  • Delivery or self-collect: rays are heavy shippers, so ask how the seller packs them and whether they deliver to your area, especially East Malaysia.
  • Live-arrival terms: check each listing or ask the seller.

Jangan lepaskan ikan ke sungai. Never release a stingray or any aquarium fish into rivers, lakes or drains. DOF reports about 80 established alien fish species in Malaysia, and release rules are set by each state: Perlis, for example, now fines people up to RM20,000 for releasing foreign fish into rivers without written permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ikan pari air tawar makan apa?

Is a freshwater stingray dangerous? Its tail barb is venomous and very painful, but rays only strike when they feel trapped. Use gloves and a container, never your bare hands, and get medical help if stung.

Can stingrays live with arowana? Yes, this is a popular pairing because arowana swim near the surface. Both need a very large tank, and the arowana must be CITES-certified and microchipped.

Is it legal to keep a freshwater stingray in Malaysia? Aquarium Potamotrygon rays did not appear on the DOF prohibited list we checked, but rules change. Buy only from DOF-compliant sellers and confirm with DOF Malaysia if unsure.
