Ikan Berenang di Permukaan? Fish Gasping for Air & Low Oxygen Fixes
If your ikan berenang di permukaan with mouths opening and closing at the top (ikan tercungap), treat it as an emergency. The most common cause in Malaysia is low oxygen in warm water, followed by ammonia or nitrite poisoning, chlorine after a water change and gill disease. The fast fix that helps in almost every case: add aeration now (air pump, lower the water level so the filter splashes, or point the outflow at the surface), then test ammonia and nitrite and do a 30–50% water change with dechlorinated water at the same temperature.
First: Is It Actually Gasping?
Some fish live at the surface naturally:
- Labyrinth fish like ikan laga (bettas), gouramis and ikan puyu gulp air normally. An occasional trip to the surface is fine.
- Surface feeders like halfbeaks, hatchetfish and some killifish always hang near the top.
- Fish that rush to the top at feeding time are just hungry.
It's a problem when:
- Fish that usually swim mid-water or at the bottom crowd at the surface.
- Gills move fast and wide.
- Several fish do it at once, often in the morning.
- Fish gather near the filter outlet or airstone.
Ikan Berenang di Permukaan: Quick Diagnosis Table
| What you see | Most likely cause | Typical trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Many fish gasping, worst early morning or on hot afternoons | Low oxygen | Heat, no air pump, power cut, overstocking, plants at night |
| Gasping plus red or dark gills, lethargy | Ammonia or nitrite | New tank, overfeeding, dead fish, filter cleaned too hard |
| Gasping right after a water change | Chlorine or temperature shock | Forgot anti klorin, water too hot or cold |
| One or two fish gasping, rubbing, fast gills, others fine | Gill flukes or other gill disease | New fish added recently |
| Gasping after adding medicine | Medicine reducing oxygen | Many treatments do this |
| Koi or pond fish gasping on a hot, still day or after rain | Low oxygen, pH swing | Heat, algae die-off, heavy rain |
Cause 1: Low Oxygen in Warm Water
Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen. At 30°C, water holds noticeably less oxygen than at 20°C, while fish need more because their metabolism speeds up. Malaysian tanks often sit at 28–31°C, and higher during heatwaves.
Other oxygen thieves:
- Night time: plants and algae consume oxygen in the dark. That's why gasping is often worst at dawn.
- Overstocking and large fish like goldfish and koi.
- Power cuts: filters and air pumps stop, and oxygen drops within hours in a crowded tank.
- A still surface: oxygen enters water at the surface, so no surface movement means little gas exchange.
Fixes:
- Add an air pump with an airstone. It's the cheapest insurance in our climate. See our pam udara guide.
- Point the filter outflow at the surface to create ripples.
- Bring the temperature down with a cooling fan or chiller. Our cooling guide explains when you need which.
- Move the tank away from sunlight and hot walls.
- Reduce stocking or upgrade the tank.
- Keep a battery-powered air pump for TNB power cuts.
Cause 2: Ammonia or Nitrite
Fish waste and rotting food produce ammonia. In a healthy tank, filter bacteria convert it. If that system fails, ammonia burns the gills, and fish gasp even if oxygen is fine.
Signs: red, inflamed or darkened gills, lethargy, clamped fins, cloudy water, a bad smell.
Fix:
- Test ammonia and nitrite with a water test kit.
- Do a 30–50% water change with anti klorin and temperature-matched water.
- Use a conditioner that detoxifies ammonia, if available.
- Feed very little for 1–2 days.
- Remove any dead fish or rotting food.
- Repeat water changes daily until readings are zero.
Ammonia becomes more toxic as temperature and pH rise, so Malaysian tanks are less forgiving. Read our keracunan ammonia guide.
Cause 3: Chlorine or Temperature Shock After a Water Change
If fish start gasping within minutes or hours of a water change:
- Did you add anti klorin? Malaysian tap water is chlorinated, and chlorine damages gills.
- Was the new water much hotter or colder? Water from a tank on a sunny roof or a hot pipe can be several degrees warmer.
Fix: add anti klorin straight away for the full tank volume, and add aeration.
Cause 4: Gill Disease and Parasites
If only one or a few fish gasp, especially after new fish arrived, suspect gill flukes or other gill parasites.
Signs: fast breathing, one gill held closed, rubbing against objects, pale or swollen gills, mucus.
Fix: treat with an anti-parasite medicine suitable for your fish, and quarantine new arrivals in future. See our gill flukes guide.
Ponds: Special Cases
- Hot, still afternoons: shallow ponds heat up and lose oxygen. Add aeration and shade.
- Heavy rain: rain can change pH and temperature quickly. Check your fish after storms.
- Green water crash: when algae die suddenly, decaying algae use up oxygen. Aerate and do partial water changes.
- Power cuts: pond pumps stop, and koi suffer quickly. A battery or solar air pump helps.
Emergency Checklist
- Add aeration immediately.
- Check temperature; cool the room or tank if above 31°C.
- Test ammonia and nitrite.
- Do a 30–50% water change with anti klorin and matched temperature.
- Stop feeding for a day.
- Check that the filter is running and not clogged.
- Look closely at gills and skin for parasites.
- Watch fish over the next few hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my fish gasp at the surface only in the morning? At night, plants and algae use oxygen instead of producing it, so levels are lowest at dawn. Add an air stone running overnight.
Is it normal for bettas to swim at the surface? Yes. Bettas breathe air using their labyrinth organ. It's only a concern if the betta is listless, has clamped fins or breathes very fast.
Does a fan help low oxygen? Indirectly. A fan cools the water by evaporation, and cooler water holds more oxygen. It doesn't replace an air pump.
