Keracunan Ammonia Ikan: Ammonia Poisoning Symptoms & Emergency Fix
Keracunan ammonia ikan (ammonia poisoning) happens when fish waste, leftover food or a dead fish produces ammonia faster than your filter bacteria can remove it. Typical signs: red or purple gills, gasping at the surface, lethargy, clamped fins, red streaks in the fins and, later, black "burn" patches on the skin. The emergency fix is: test, then change 30–50% of the water with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water, add a conditioner that binds ammonia, stop feeding for a day, add aeration and repeat daily until ammonia reads zero. Then find out why the filter couldn't cope.
Why Ammonia Is So Dangerous in Malaysian Tanks
Ammonia exists in two forms in water: a toxic form (free ammonia, NH3) and a much less toxic form (ammonium, NH4+). The balance depends on temperature and pH:
- Higher temperature = more toxic ammonia. Malaysian tanks often sit at 28–31°C, so the same ammonia reading is more harmful here than in a cool-country tank at 22°C.
- Higher pH = more toxic ammonia. Tanks with crushed coral, limestone or African cichlid setups run higher pH and are less forgiving.
- Warm water also holds less oxygen, so fish with damaged gills struggle even more.
That's why a reading that looks "only a little" on a test kit can still kill fish in our climate.
Keracunan Ammonia Ikan: Symptoms
| Stage | What you see |
|---|---|
| Early | Fish less active, hanging near the surface or filter outlet, eating less |
| Moderate | Red, inflamed or purplish gills, gasping, clamped fins, red streaks in fins |
| Severe | Lying on the bottom, rapid breathing, cloudy eyes, sudden deaths |
| After exposure | Black patches on body and fins (healing burns), ragged fins |
Ammonia often comes with cloudy water and a bad smell. See our air akuarium keruh guide if your tank is cloudy too.
Ammonia Tinggi Akuarium: Common Causes
- New tank syndrome: a new tank without established bacteria. The most common cause. Read our aquarium cycling guide.
- Overfeeding: uneaten food rots into ammonia.
- Overstocking: too many fish, or big messy fish like goldfish and koi, in a small tank.
- Dead fish or snail hidden behind décor.
- Filter cleaned too hard: washing sponges under tap water kills bacteria because of chlorine.
- Replacing all filter media at once.
- Power cuts: a filter stopped for hours loses oxygen, and bacteria start dying.
- Medicines: some antibiotics harm filter bacteria.
Emergency Fix: Step by Step
- Test ammonia and nitrite with a water test kit. Note the reading.
- Change 30–50% of the water. Match the temperature closely and treat the new water with anti klorin. In severe cases, do a second change a few hours later.
- Add an ammonia-binding conditioner. Many water conditioners detoxify ammonia temporarily, buying the bacteria time to catch up. Check the label for "detoxifies ammonia".
- Stop feeding for 1–2 days. Fish can safely go without food much longer than that.
- Add aeration. An air pump helps fish with damaged gills.
- Find and remove the source: dead fish, rotting food, decaying plants.
- Add beneficial bacteria. Bottled bacteria products can help rebuild the colony.
- Retest daily and keep doing water changes until ammonia and nitrite both read zero.
A note about test results after binders
Some conditioners lock ammonia into a less toxic form, but some test kits still detect it. Your test may still show ammonia even though the fish are safer. Keep doing water changes until the true source is fixed and readings fall, and follow the product's guidance on timing.
Treating Damaged Fish
- Gills usually recover once ammonia is gone, if the damage wasn't severe.
- Black patches often appear as burns heal and fade over weeks. Don't treat them as a separate disease if the fish is active and eating.
- Fin damage can lead to fin rot. Keep water clean and watch for spreading white edges.
- A low dose of garam ikan (aquarium salt) can reduce stress for tolerant species like goldfish, koi fish and livebearers. Don't use salt for sensitive species, and never as a replacement for water changes.
Ammonia Burn on Goldfish and Koi Fish
Goldfish and koi fish produce a lot of ammonia and are often kept in tanks or ponds that are too small. Ammonia burns appear as black or red patches, especially on fancy goldfish.
- Upgrade filtration and tank size.
- Increase water changes (often 30–50% weekly).
- Feed less and only what is eaten in a couple of minutes.
Preventing Ammonia Spikes
| Habit | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Cycle a new tank for 2–4 weeks before adding most fish | Builds bacteria |
| Add fish gradually | Lets bacteria keep up |
| Feed small amounts | Less waste |
| Clean filter sponges in old tank water, not tap water | Protects bacteria from chlorine |
| Never replace all filter media at once | Keeps bacteria |
| Regular water changes with anti klorin | Dilutes waste |
| Test water weekly | Catches problems early |
| Battery air pump for power cuts | Keeps bacteria alive |
For more on tap water, read the anti klorin guide. If fish died suddenly and you're not sure why, check our kenapa ikan mati guide.
Ammonia vs Nitrite vs Nitrate
| Compound | Source | Danger |
|---|---|---|
| Ammonia | Fish waste, rotting food | Very toxic, burns gills |
| Nitrite | Bacteria converting ammonia | Very toxic, stops blood carrying oxygen |
| Nitrate | Bacteria converting nitrite | Less toxic; keep low with water changes |
A healthy, cycled tank reads 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and low nitrate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Apa tanda ikan keracunan ammonia?
How long does it take fish to recover from ammonia poisoning? Mild cases often improve within days once ammonia is zero. Gill and skin damage can take a few weeks to heal fully.
Can I use bottled bacteria to remove ammonia fast? It helps rebuild the filter, but it's not an instant fix. Combine it with water changes and an ammonia-binding conditioner.
Does standing tap water overnight remove ammonia? No. Endap air removes some chlorine but not ammonia or chloramine. Use anti klorin and water changes.
