Clown Loach (Ikan Botia): Care, Adult Size & White Spot Risk in Malaysia
The clown loach (Chromobotia macracanthus, often sold as ikan botia) is the orange fish with three thick black bands that you see in small sizes at almost every aquarium shop. Most buyers do not realise it is a long-term, large fish: it can grow to 20–30 cm and live for well over 15 years. Keep clown loaches in a group of at least 5, plan for a 4 kaki tank as a minimum for adults (5–6 kaki is better), feed sinking foods, and be careful with white spot (ich). Clown loaches catch it easily and are sensitive to many white spot medicines.
Clown Loach: Ikan Apa?
People often search clown loach ikan apa after seeing it in a shop. It is a loach from the family Botiidae, native to rivers of Sumatra and Borneo (the Indonesian side) in Southeast Asia. In the wild it lives in warm, clear to slightly stained rivers and migrates to flooded areas to spawn. Almost all clown loaches in the trade come from fish farms and hatcheries using hormone-induced spawning, as they very rarely breed in home aquariums.
"Ikan botia" is also used for related loaches, such as the yoyo loach (Botia almorhae), which stays smaller at around 10–15 cm. Ask the seller exactly which species you are buying.
Clown Loach Size: Plan for a Big Fish
| Age | Typical size |
|---|---|
| Sold in shops | 3–5 cm |
| After 1–2 years | 10–15 cm |
| Adult (5+ years) | 20–25 cm, sometimes 30 cm |
They grow slowly, so many keepers do not notice the problem until the tank is suddenly too small. A group of five adult clown loaches needs a big tank.

Why Clown Loaches Need a Group
Clown loaches are social. Kept alone or in pairs, they hide, stop eating and get stressed. In a group they:
- Swim together and play
- Make clicking sounds, especially at feeding time
- Sometimes lie on their sides or rest upside down, which scares new owners but is often normal resting behaviour
If a clown loach lies on its side and also breathes very fast, has white spots or refuses food, check water and health.
Tank Setup
- Substrate: smooth sand or rounded gravel. Clown loaches dig and have sensitive barbels.
- Hiding spots: driftwood, caves and pipes. They like to squeeze into tight places.
- Filtration: strong filtration and good oxygen. They come from flowing rivers. In Malaysian heat, add an air pump.
- Plants: hardy plants like anubias, java fern and Cryptocoryne. They may uproot delicate plants while digging.
- Lid: helpful, as loaches can jump when startled.
Water and Temperature in Malaysia
Clown loaches are comfortable at 25–30°C, so most Malaysian homes need no heater. Things to watch:
- Chlorine: always use anti klorin when you tukar air. Our tap water guide explains why.
- Water quality: they are sensitive to nitrate and ammonia. Change 25–30% weekly.
- Heatwaves: above 31–32°C, oxygen falls. Add aeration and a fan.
- Temperature drops: in air-conditioned rooms, sudden drops can trigger white spot. Keep temperature steady.
Feeding
Clown loaches eat from the bottom but will also take food from mid-water once they are confident.
- Sinking pellets and wafers as a staple
- Frozen bloodworm (cacing darah), brine shrimp and mysis
- Blanched vegetables such as cucumber and peas
- Snails: clown loaches love them
Snail control
Clown loaches are famous for eating pest snails, such as small bladder and ramshorn snails. They suck snails from their shells, even small ones. This is useful in a tank with a snail outbreak, but it also means clown loaches will eat snails you want to keep, like small nerite or mystery snails. If you keep aquarium snails on purpose, do not add clown loaches to that tank.
White Spot Risk: Treat Carefully
Clown loaches are sometimes called "white spot magnets". They catch it after transport, sudden temperature changes or stress. Because they have tiny, embedded scales, they are also more sensitive to many white spot medications than most fish.
Safer approach for clown loaches
- Check the medication label for warnings about loaches or scaleless fish. Many medicines that contain malachite green or formalin advise a reduced dose.
- Use half dose where the label recommends it for sensitive fish, and repeat as directed.
- Raise aeration, as medication and warmth both lower oxygen.
- Keep temperature steady at the high end of their range (around 29–30°C). Warm water speeds up the white spot life cycle, so treatment works faster. Do not exceed what other fish in the tank can handle.
- Do water changes between doses as the label directs.
- Quarantine new fish for 2–4 weeks before adding them to a main tank.
Our white spot treatment guide covers the full process, and why aquarium fish die helps with other symptoms.
Tank Mates
Clown loaches are peaceful and get along with most community fish of similar size:
- Larger tetras and rasboras
- Barbs (including tiger barbs, which are nippy but fast)
- Gouramis
- Angelfish and other peaceful cichlids
- Plecos and other bottom dwellers in a big tank
Avoid tiny fish and shrimp that adults may eat, and very aggressive fish.
