Ikan Sumpit: Archer Fish Care in Brackish Tanks in Malaysia

Ikan sumpit (archer fish, Toxotes) is a native Malaysian mangrove fish famous for shooting jets of water at insects on leaves above the surface, knocking them into the water to eat. In an aquarium, archer fish need a large tank (at least 4 kaki for adults), brackish water once they grow past the juvenile stage, a low water level or open area above the surface so they can "shoot", and a meaty diet of insects, frozen foods and floating pellets. They can grow to about 20–30 cm, so plan for the adult size from day one.

A Native Mangrove Fish

The name ikan sumpit comes from the Malay word for a blowpipe, because of the way the fish "shoots" its prey. Archer fish live in mangroves, estuaries and the lower reaches of rivers across Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. The two species you will see most often are:

Species Common name Notes
Toxotes jaculatrix Banded archer fish Most common in the trade; four to five dark bands on a silver body; prefers brackish water
Toxotes chatareus Seven-spot archer fish Spots instead of bands; tolerates fresher water

Other species exist, but they are less common in shops. Buy captive-sourced or responsibly collected fish from shops, and do not take fish from mangroves yourself.

Ikan Sumpit Care Table

Factor What archer fish need
Temperature 25–30°C; Malaysian rooms are ideal
Tank Juveniles: 3 kaki. Adults: 4 kaki minimum (~230 L), wider is better
Water Juveniles: fresh to slightly brackish. Adults: brackish, roughly SG 1.005–1.010
pH 7.5–8.5
Temperament Peaceful to other species of similar size; may squabble with each other
Diet Carnivore: insects, frozen foods, floating pellets
Adult size ~20–30 cm
Lifespan Often 5–10 years
Beginner? Intermediate; brackish water adds work

Brackish Water Explained

Brackish water is a mix of fresh and sea water, found where rivers meet the sea. It is measured as specific gravity (SG) with a hydrometer or refractometer. Fresh water is 1.000 and natural sea water is about 1.025.

How to set it up

  1. Use marine salt (not table salt or plain aquarium salt). Browse marine salt.
  2. Dissolve the salt in dechlorinated water in a bucket, never directly in the tank with fish.
  3. Raise salinity slowly, by about 0.001–0.002 SG per week, until you reach your target.
  4. Top up evaporation with fresh dechlorinated water only. Salt does not evaporate, so adding salty water raises SG.
  5. Test regularly with a hydrometer or refractometer and water test kits.

Malaysian tap water is chlorinated and often soft with low KH. Marine salt also adds hardness and buffering, which keeps pH higher and steadier. Always dose anti klorin first; see our tap water guide.

Can archer fish live in fresh water?

Young archer fish are often kept in fresh water in shops, and T. chatareus tolerates fresh water better than T. jaculatrix. For long-term health, especially for the banded archer, slightly brackish water is better. Fish kept fully fresh for years may be more prone to skin problems.

Tank Setup: The Open-Top Paludarium

Archer fish swim at the surface and spend a lot of time looking up. The ideal setup lets them shoot:

  • Lower water level: fill to about half or two-thirds, leaving space above the water.
  • Overhanging branches or plants above the water: mangrove-style roots, driftwood or terrestrial plants like pothos on the back.
  • Open area to shoot: insects placed on leaves above the waterline give them something to aim at.
  • Lid or high sides: archer fish can jump. A lid with ventilation, or tall glass above the waterline, prevents escapes.
  • Strong filtration: a canister or top filter, because these are meaty eaters.

Many hobbyists build a paludarium (half land, half water) for archer fish. It looks like a slice of a Malaysian mangrove and gives the fish natural behaviour.

Malaysian driftwood can be used if prepared properly. See our Malaysian driftwood guide.

Feeding: Training Your Archer Fish to Shoot

What to feed

  • Floating pellets or sticks: good staple
  • Live insects: crickets, small mealworms, flies
  • Frozen foods: bloodworm, krill, mysis, small prawns
  • Live food from clean sources only. See live feed.

Getting them to "spit"

  1. Start with food floating on the surface so they learn to eat in the tank.
  2. Stick a small insect or pellet on a leaf or the glass just above the waterline.
  3. Raise it a few centimetres each time.
  4. Over time, many archer fish learn to shoot targets well above the surface. They can also jump to snatch food directly.

Shooting is natural behaviour and good enrichment, but it is not a must. Fish also eat food from the surface.

Tank Mates

Archer fish are peaceful but will eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouths. In a brackish tank of 4 kaki or more, good options are:

  • Mono (Monodactylus) and scat (Scatophagus) fish, which share brackish habitats
  • Bumblebee gobies (in a separate part of the tank, as they are small and may be eaten)
  • Other archer fish in a group of 3 or more, to spread out squabbles

Avoid small fish, shrimp and slow-moving fish with long fins.

Common Problems

  • Fish not eating: offer floating or live insects; new arrivals may take a few days to settle.
  • White patches or skin problems: often linked to long-term fresh water. Raise salinity slowly.
  • Jumping out: cover the tank.
  • White spot: brackish water helps reduce some parasites, but white spot can still happen after transport. See our white spot guide.

Jangan lepaskan ikan ke sungai. Never release aquarium archer fish into rivers or mangroves. Pet fish can carry diseases into wild populations.

Buying Archer Fish on FishyHub

Browse archer fish for sale. Before you buy:

  • Check the species (banded or seven-spot) and current size.
  • Ask the seller whether the fish has been kept in fresh or brackish water, so you can acclimatise it.
  • Check whether the photo is the actual fish, delivery or self-collect options and live-arrival terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ikan sumpit makan apa?

Serangga seperti cengkerik dan ulat, pelet terapung, serta makanan beku seperti cacing darah dan udang kecil. Ikan sumpit suka makan di permukaan air.

What is archer fish in Malay?

It is called ikan sumpit, from the Malay word for blowpipe, because it "shoots" water at insects.

How big do archer fish get?

Usually about 20–30 cm as adults, depending on species. Plan for at least a 4 kaki tank.

Do archer fish need salt?

Juveniles can live in fresh water, but adults, especially the banded archer fish, do best in brackish water made with marine salt.
