Product Description

A rainbow that clings to torrents, grazing algae from slick stones.

Discover the Rainbow Stiphodon (Stiphodon ornatus), a peaceful algae-grazing goby for mature freshwater tanks with gentle flow and plenty of natural biofilm.

  • Water conditions: Rainbow Stiphodon gobies thrive in stable, well-oxygenated freshwater with a gentle to moderate current. Aim for a temperature of 22–26°C (72–79°F), pH 6.5–7.8, and general hardness around 4–12 dGH. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero and nitrate should be kept low, ideally below 20 ppm. Provide plenty of surface movement and turnover to maintain high dissolved oxygen, especially in warmer rooms. A mature tank with established biofilm, algae growth on smooth stones and glass, and a fine sand or rounded-gravel substrate is far more important than precise numbers. Avoid freshly set-up aquariums, unstable pH, and heavy organic waste. These gobies are amphidromous in the wild and are best kept in freshwater in the aquarium; they do not require brackish water. Drip acclimation is strongly recommended because they can be sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, pH, and hardness.
  • Suitable tank mates: Rainbow Stiphodon are peaceful, non-aggressive bottom-dwellers that do best with calm, small community fish. Good companions include small rasboras, tetras, danios, and other peaceful shoaling species that occupy the midwater. Small livebearers and peaceful loaches can also work in a spacious, well-structured tank. Adult cherry shrimp, amano shrimp, and peaceful snails are generally safe. Avoid large or predatory cichlids, aggressive loaches, puffers, crabs, crayfish, and any fish large enough to view the gobies as food. Fin-nippers and boisterous bottom-feeders can stress them, and very active algae-eating species may compete for the same biofilm. If keeping more than one Rainbow Stiphodon, use a larger footprint with smooth cobbles, caves, and visual breaks; males may spar lightly, but serious aggression is uncommon when space and grazing areas are plentiful. Do not house them with goldfish, large plecos, or other species that create heavy waste or dominate feeding areas.
  • Feeding habits: Rainbow Stiphodon are specialised aufwuchs grazers. In the wild they rasp algae, biofilm, and the tiny organisms living within it from rocks and wood. A mature aquarium with visible soft algae and biofilm is essential, as many specimens initially ignore prepared foods. Supplement their natural grazing with spirulina-based algae wafers, Repashy Soilent Green or similar gel foods, blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and algae paste smeared on smooth stones. They are not active carnivores, so avoid relying on high-protein foods; a diet too rich in protein can cause digestive problems. Feed small amounts several times weekly, preferably after lights-out or when the tank is calm, and remove uneaten vegetables before they foul the water. Newly imported gobies may be shy and thin, so observe them closely and offer food near their preferred grazing rocks. Do not expect them to clean a tank of all algae; they need a continuous supply, so keep some surfaces untouched during maintenance.
  • Care requirements: These gobies are peaceful but sensitive, making them best suited to experienced fishkeepers or carefully prepared beginners. Use a tight-fitting lid because Stiphodon are capable jumpers and can escape through small gaps. Provide smooth, rounded stones, cobbles, and driftwood for grazing and retreats, with a soft sand substrate that will not damage their delicate undersides. Maintain gentle to moderate flow without creating a whirlpool, and keep filtration reliable but not blasting the tank. Avoid copper-based medications and treat all treatments with caution; these gobies are invertebrates-like in their sensitivity to some chemicals. Perform regular partial water changes, siphon detritus, and keep filtration media rinsed in tank water, but do not scrub every surface clean—leave algae and biofilm for grazing. Quarantine new arrivals where possible and acclimatise slowly. Monitor body condition, as weight loss is an early warning sign of insufficient biofilm or bullying. With stable water, mature grazing surfaces, peaceful tank mates, and a consistent algae-based diet, Rainbow Stiphodon can be a fascinating and long-lived addition to the peaceful freshwater community.
