Rummy Nose Tetra (Hemigrammus Rhodostomus)

The Hemigrammus rhodostomus, commonly called the Rummy Nose Tetra, is a compact, peaceful centerpiece for any freshwater community tank. With its iconic bright orange-red nose and a gleaming silver body, this small schooling fish brings motion, color, and a touch of natural elegance to your aquarium setup.

Why this fish stands out

• Striking focal point — a vivid red-nose feature that becomes more vivid as the group swims together.
• Dynamic schooling behavior — in a proper school (6–10+), they glide in coordinated, mid-water moves that captivate observers.
• Compact and versatile — ideal for nano tanks and larger community setups alike, adding life without overpowering the tank.
• Behavior you can trust — inherently peaceful with other small, non-aggressive species; thrives when kept with compatible tank mates.
• Low-maintenance-feel with proper care — happiest in stable water conditions and a well-planted habitat that mimics their natural environment.

Care and habitat

Set the stage for a healthy school by providing soft to moderately hard water with a gentle, steady current. Aim for a temperature range of roughly 72–79°F (22–26°C) and a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. A dimmed lighting scheme with plenty of plants, driftwood, and quiet nooks helps reduce stress and encourages natural schooling behavior.

Keep a minimum school of 6–10 individuals to maximize color, cohesion, and activity. A densely planted aquarium or a tank with well-placed hiding spots gives these fish confidence to explore and forage without feeling exposed.

Diet and feeding

Rummy Nose Tetras are omnivores that appreciate a varied diet. Offer high-quality flake or micro pellets as a daily staple, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Feed small portions 2–3 times a day, ensuring all fish have a chance to eat before the food sinks or disperses.

Social life and tank mates

Peaceful and non-aggressive, they are excellent companions for other small tropical fish with similar temperament. Ideal tank mates include other small tetras, rasboras, or peaceful bottom dwellers. Avoid pairing with large, boisterous species that may nip at fins or bully the school.

Breeding and longevity

Breeding is possible in a dedicated, well-maintained breeding setup with very soft, acidic water and dim lighting. Eggs are delicate and adults may consume them, so many hobbyists use a separate spawning tank and remove adults after the spawn. In well-cared-for community tanks, you can enjoy these fish for several years with consistent water quality and a stable habitat.

Ideal for what kinds of aquariums?

Whether you’re building a planted, biotope-inspired community tank or a compact nano setup, the Rummy Nose Tetra adds color, movement, and a sense of balance. It pairs beautifully with other small schooling species and thrives in tanks that prioritize gentle filtration, stable water chemistry, and naturalistic décor.
