Product Description

A halfmoon tail flares crimson and violet, a mirror-dancer of still water.

Halfmoon Red Purple Betta splendens: a show-stopping 180° tail betta with rich red and violet tones. Hardy, low-maintenance and ideal for planted nano aquariums.

  • Water Conditions & Aquarium Setup: The Halfmoon Red Purple is a tropical labyrinth fish that thrives in warm, stable, well-oxygenated water. Aim for a temperature of 24–28°C (76–82°F), maintained with a reliable, adjustable aquarium heater — sudden temperature swings are one of the most common causes of stress, fin clamping and immune suppression in bettas. Keep pH between 6.5 and 7.5, general hardness (GH) at 5–15 dGH and carbonate hardness (KH) at 3–8 dKH. Ammonia and nitrite must always read 0 ppm, while nitrate should stay below 20 ppm through regular partial water changes. Because the enormous halfmoon tail is heavy and delicate, strong filtration is best avoided; choose a sponge filter, a baffled internal filter or an air-driven box filter to keep the current gentle. A 20-litre (5-gallon) tank is the practical minimum for one specimen, although 30–40 litres gives far more stable water chemistry and room for aquascaping. Always fit a tight lid, as bettas are accomplished jumpers.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Despite their reputation for aggression, Halfmoon bettas can live peacefully in a well-planned community tank when chosen carefully. Never house two male bettas together, and avoid fin-nippers such as tiger barbs, serpae tetras, rosy barbs and most danios, as they will shred the long halfmoon tail. Excellent companions include small, peaceful schooling fish like ember tetras, neon tetras, harlequin rasboras and chili rasboras, plus bottom-dwellers such as corydoras, kuhli loaches and otocinclus catfish which occupy a different part of the water column. Nerite, mystery and ramshorn snails are generally ignored, and Amano shrimp usually work well in a planted setup — although smaller cherry shrimp may be hunted. Introduce tank mates before the betta where possible, keep the tank heavily planted with broken sight lines, and monitor the first week closely. Every betta has its own personality, so be prepared to rehome a tank mate if bullying occurs.
  • Feeding Habits: Bettas are carnivorous micropredators by nature, with a short digestive tract built for insects and small crustaceans. Offer a high-quality staple such as betta-specific micro pellets, two to four pellets twice daily, adjusting the portion so the fish clears everything within about two minutes. Vary the diet for colour, condition and vitality with frozen or freeze-dried bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, mysis and cyclops. Soak freeze-dried foods in tank water for a few minutes before feeding to prevent bloating and constipation, and never let uneaten food decay in the tank. One fasting day per week helps clear the gut and reduces the risk of swim bladder problems. Overfeeding is the single biggest mistake made by new betta keepers — a swollen belly, stringy white faeces or a fish that lists to one side are all warning signs that portions are too large.
  • Care Requirements: Daily care is straightforward but consistency is key. Perform a 20–25% water change every week using a gravel vacuum to remove mulm, and always pre-treat replacement water with a quality dechlorinator. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH weekly, and keep the temperature steady. Add Indian almond leaves or botanical extract to release tannins, which naturally lower pH slightly, provide antibacterial benefits and encourage the rich red and purple colouration to intensify. Live plants such as anubias, java fern, cryptocorynes and floating species like salvinia or frogbit provide cover, diffuse light and help keep nitrate low. Keep lighting moderate at eight to ten hours a day to limit algae and stress. Handle bags gently and acclimate over 20–30 minutes using the drip method before release.
  • Health, Disease Prevention & Lifespan: A well-kept Halfmoon Red Purple betta regularly lives three to five years. Watch for fin rot, velvet, ich, popeye and tail biting — all of which are usually triggered by poor water quality, cold drafts or stress. Quarantine any new livestock for two to three weeks before adding it to the main tank, and never share nets or equipment between tanks without disinfecting. If medications are needed, check labels for copper and invertebrate safety if shrimp or snails are present. With warm, clean, gently filtered water and a varied diet, this striking red and violet halfmoon will reward you with vivid colour, bold flaring displays and years of personality-filled company.
