Product Description

A yellow enigma—no scientific name, only the code FCCP Yellow.

The FCCP Yellow is a vibrant, peaceful freshwater cichlid that adds a brilliant splash of color to any aquarium. Ideal for both beginners and experts.

  • Water Conditions: The FCCP Yellow thrives in well-maintained freshwater aquariums with stable parameters. Native to hard, alkaline waters, it prefers a pH range of 7.8 to 8.6, though it can adapt to slightly lower values if acclimated slowly. Water temperature should be kept between 24°C and 28°C (75°F–82°F). Maintain a general hardness (dGH) of 10–15 and a carbonate hardness (dKH) of 8–12. Ammonia and nitrite must always read zero, and nitrate should be kept below 20 ppm through regular water changes (20–30% weekly). Good filtration and aeration are essential, as this species is sensitive to fluctuating parameters. Avoid sudden changes in temperature or pH, as stress can lead to disease outbreaks like ich or fin rot. A consistent lighting schedule of 8–10 hours per day helps mimic natural conditions and promotes vibrant coloration.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: The FCCP Yellow is relatively peaceful for a cichlid, making it a good candidate for a community of similar-sized, semi-aggressive fish. Ideal tank mates include other peaceful Malawi cichlids such as Labidochromis caeruleus, Pseudotropheus acei, Iodotropheus sprengerae (Rusty Cichlid), and Cynotilapia afra. Avoid keeping it with overly aggressive mbuna like Melanochromis auratus or Demasoni, as they may bully it. Also, do not house with small fish like neon tetras or guppies, as they may be eaten. Bottom-dwellers like Synodontis catfish or bristlenose plecos can work well, provided they are not too small. In a community tank, provide plenty of rockwork and hiding spots to reduce aggression. If keeping multiple FCCP Yellows, maintain a ratio of one male to several females to spread aggression. Avoid mixing with other yellow cichlids that look similar, as crossbreeding or territorial fights may occur. A tank of at least 120 cm (4 feet) in length is recommended for a community of these cichlids.
  • Feeding Habits: The FCCP Yellow is an omnivore with a preference for herbivorous foods. In the wild, it grazes on algae and small invertebrates. In captivity, offer a varied diet to maintain health and color. Staple foods should include high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, preferably with spirulina or algae content. Supplement with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and mysis shrimp. Avoid feeding too much protein-rich food, as this can lead to bloating and Malawi bloat, a serious condition. Feed 2–3 times daily, only as much as the fish can consume in 2 minutes. Remove uneaten food to prevent water quality issues. Occasionally provide blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or cucumber for added fiber. A balanced diet enhances the yellow coloration and supports a robust immune system. During breeding, increase the frequency of live foods to condition females.
  • Care Requirements: Caring for the FCCP Yellow is straightforward if you maintain a clean, stable environment. A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 gallons) is suitable for a single specimen or a small harem; larger tanks (200 litres+) are better for communities. Use a sandy substrate to allow for natural foraging behaviour and prevent damage to their delicate barbels. Create a rocky aquascape with caves and crevices to mimic their natural habitat and provide territories. A powerful filtration system (canister or sump) is recommended to handle the bioload. Perform weekly water changes of 25–30% using a gravel vacuum to remove debris. Test water parameters regularly with a liquid test kit. Keep the tank covered, as cichlids are known to jump. Maintain a consistent temperature using a reliable heater and thermometer. Quarantine new fish for 2–4 weeks before adding them to the main tank to prevent disease introduction. Observe for signs of stress, such as clamped fins, hiding, or loss of appetite. Treat any illness promptly in a hospital tank. With proper care, FCCP Yellow can live 8–10 years, providing years of enjoyment.
