Product Description

Chagoi Koi are gentle, friendly pond giants prized for their solid earthy tones and remarkably trusting nature. The perfect centrepiece for any koi pond or collection.

  • Water Conditions: Chagoi Koi thrive in spacious outdoor ponds with a stable water temperature between 15°C – 25°C (59°F – 77°F). They can tolerate cooler conditions during winter months, provided the pond does not freeze solid and a sufficiently deep area (at least 90cm – 120cm) allows them to overwinter comfortably. The ideal pH range is 7.0 – 8.5, with a slightly alkaline preference. Ammonia and nitrite levels must always remain at 0 ppm, while nitrate should be kept below 40 ppm. A robust biological filtration system is essential, combined with moderate water movement and excellent oxygenation. Regular partial water changes of 10–20% per week help maintain pristine water quality and reduce the build-up of organic waste that can stress these fish. Avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature or water parameters, as Chagoi are hardy but still sensitive to rapid environmental shifts. In smaller garden ponds, a high-quality pump and UV clarifier are recommended to keep the water clear and free from harmful pathogens.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Chagoi Koi are renowned for their docile and sociable temperament, making them ideal companions for other koi varieties including Kohaku, Taisho Sanke, Showa Sanshoku, and Ogon. They also coexist peacefully with goldfish varieties such as Comets, Shubunkins, and Sarasa Comets, which appreciate similar water conditions. Because Chagoi are large fish that can grow up to 90cm in length, they require ample swimming space and should never be housed in indoor aquariums unless the tank is exceptionally large (over 1,000 litres). Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping species like tiger barbs or cichlids, as the slow-moving Chagoi can become stressed. Bottom-dwelling pond fish like orfe or rudd can also share the pond harmoniously, but ensure all inhabitants have enough room to avoid overcrowding. The gentle nature of Chagoi means they will often feed directly from your hand, making them a joy to interact with during daily feeding routines.
  • Feeding Habits: Chagoi Koi are enthusiastic omnivores and will readily accept a wide range of foods. For optimal health and growth, provide a high-quality sinking or floating koi pellet that contains 30–35% protein, along with essential vitamins, minerals, and natural colour enhancers. Feed 2–4 times daily during the active growing season (spring and summer), offering only as much food as they can consume within 5 minutes to prevent overfeeding and water pollution. Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, or peas, as well as occasional treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or chopped earthworms. In autumn, gradually reduce feeding frequency as water temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F), and stop feeding entirely when temperatures fall below 5°C (41°F) — at this point their metabolism slows dramatically. During winter, Chagoi will fast naturally and rely on their stored fat reserves. Always use a wheat-germ-based food in cooler months, as it is more easily digestible than high-protein pellets.
  • Care Requirements: Chagoi Koi are among the hardiest koi varieties, making them an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced pond keepers. However, they still demand a high standard of care to thrive long-term. Provide a pond with a minimum volume of 2,000 litres for a single fish, and add an additional 1,000 litres for each additional koi to prevent overcrowding. Strong filtration, including both mechanical and biological stages, is non-negotiable for maintaining clear water and a healthy nitrogen cycle. Perform weekly water tests to monitor pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, and adjust as needed. A pond heater or de-icer is useful in colder climates to keep a small area of the surface ice-free, allowing harmful gases to escape. Quarantine any new fish for at least 2–4 weeks before introducing them to your main pond to prevent disease transmission. Regular observation of your Chagoi's behaviour, appetite, and physical appearance will help you spot early signs of illness such as parasites, fungal infections, or fin rot. Provide partial shade and aquatic plants (netting or pots) to offer refuge from intense summer sun and predators like herons. With proper care, Chagoi can live for over 30 years and become beloved, interactive members of your garden ecosystem.
  • Colour and Appearance: The Chagoi is prized for its solid, single-coloured body that ranges from muted brown, bronze, and olive-green to soft blues and even cream or yellow variations. Unlike many other koi, the Chagoi's colour is typically uniform with a matt or slightly lustrous finish, and they often display a distinct, rounded head that gives them a friendly, approachable appearance. Their skin texture is smooth, and they possess a thick, powerful body shape that grows steadily over time. Because of their calm personality and striking earthy tones, Chagoi are frequently used as "peacemakers" in ponds, encouraging shyer koi to come out of hiding. Their colour may deepen or lighten depending on water quality, diet, and season, adding to their unique charm as living, evolving works of art.
